I think, right now, I'd have to give the nod to MGS4. Nothing else I've played this year has had as much of an impact one me as that title. I'll be mentally chewing on the events of the game for many years to come, and it confirms for me Kojima's place in the elite of game designers. Just a stellar all around game, and one of the few to ship this year in a complete polished state, with no need for patching and fixing post release. Honorable mention to Devil May Cry 4, and Lost Odyssey. DMC4 is a successful continuation of the DMC formula, and is still regularly in my gaming diet thanks to not only the joy of playing the game proper over and over, but the challenging Bloody Palace mode.
It also likewise gets a nod for shipping as a complete and polished product, though the lack of DLC actually hurts it a bit. Lady, Trish, and Vergil as DLC characters for use in the Bloody Palace would have been totally worth paying for to get, and would give the game even more replay value and general awesomeness. Lost Odyssey is an epic turn based JRPG, with the strategy, full party control, story, character development, and production values that made me a fan of the genre in the first place all fully intact, to my great delight. I'm unlikely to forget Kaim Argonar's long journey any time soon. I would have thrown Fable 2 into the mix as well, but the random freezes and occasional odd glitch hold it back from true greatness.
