4th wall = The acknowledgement of the performers knowing they are playing to an audience.

My personal favorites come from MGS1 and 2 where in MGS1, you're told to look at your game CD cover to find a codec frequency. In MGS2, Snake tells Raiden not to worry as he points to the bandanna on his head and says, "Infinite Ammo".

I also like the one in RE: Code Veronica, where the final code you need is mentioned nowhere in the game....but is the game's title itself.

Hmmm, even though I haven't played it, Eternal Darkness. Took Psycho Mantis to a whole new level, and added to the illusion that the world around you (or at least your perception of it) was falling apart.

I think the original Metal Gear was the best when you fight Psycho Mantis. Where he reads your memory card and moves the controller with the rumble was hilarious. I loved it.

The Baten Kaitos games make interesting use of it, making you playing the game an actual character who interacts with the main character. It probably could have been pushed further, but it definitely helps you care about the characters.

My two favorites are the Mojoverse level in X-Men for the Genesis... It was the first instance I came across where I had to do something in real life to effect the game that didn't involve a controller

Also in all of Omikron you are supposed to believe that a demon has sucked your soul into the game universe and that if you die in the game universe, not only to you doom all of existence, you die in real life.

That part was awsome, but you forgot the BEST PART! I loved when Psycho Mantis tells you to put the controller down before he moves it with the rumble thing and the camera moves to Snake who looks at the screen and nods, letting you know that he approves.

Bioshock, and The Longest Journey. crucifine

I don't remember anything from The Longest Journey that would count... then again it's been about a year since I last played it soo I might've just forgotten.

My personal favorite though is definently Max Payne 2 and his drug induced crazed dreams! Oh, and Psychonauts too with IT'S crazed non-drug induced psychotic dreams that often mentioned the player in some way. Good times!

How does Bioshock qualify? The player is treated like the main character in the world while not breaking the drama and realism in the game. Also, Rapture is never exposed as a playground for the player's pleasure. Atlas doesn't even tell you to press certain controller buttons to manipulate things in the world.

Definitely MGS... Kojima's just so good at it.

"Snake, let me give you a shiatsu massage." or whatever the line was...

Once you get to Andrew Ryan, you realize that you've been suckered into following Fontaine's instructions the entire time. Not Jack, the players themselves. It's a bit metaphysical and deterministic. It took me a few hours to work out the devs were playing a huge joke on us.

That needs a spoiler tag... and I think you're putting pieces together that aren't there. Like you have to follow his instructions because the game is totally linear. They promised a big world where things happened wether or not you were there. Instead, the game ended up being a corridor crawl. That would be quite the surprise if one of the worst things about the game turned out to be intentional.

Gotta be the Paper Mario moments.

"Press the A button to switch between dimensions. What's an A button you ask? Well, if there's some unknown entity watching us, he'll know what to do."

Jak 3 - pretty early in the game, Seek tells Jak & Daxter "This is not a game!", causing them to look towards the player in a bewildered way. Made me smile.

I have three examples in my mind. 1) Ratchet and Clank2: You where chasing a bad guy through several planets. Everytime you landed on a new one the villan was just taking off. Clank: "I wonder why we are always late" and the two heroes look directly at you. 2) MGS1: After torture you are contacted by that little device in your ear, the doctor says that you have to place DualShock 1 on your arm and she will supress your pain. 3) Psycho-Mantis fight:D

eternal darkness was such an awesome game. I dare never play it again in fear it may ruin my great memories of it.

Well, the topic said *contains spoilers* so I just let it stay that way. And I'm not putting it together from pieces that aren't there. It's incredibly linear because you're following Atlas' 'requests'. I know nothing would happen if you refused, but the only way to progress in the game is to submit to his will.
