Mine is an import called Paroius. It plays just like Gradius, but the enemies and backgrounds are crazy and nonsensical.

Bubble_Man
Gradius V on PS2 is absolutely brilliant (and should be given that it was created by Treasure).
Starforce (arcade) - very oldskool, but great.
Super Aleste (snes)
Ikaruga
Any R-type game (other than that psp nonesense and r-type leo).Delta and Final are great.
Xenon2 (back in the day this was amazing, although a little dated now)
Slapfight
X-multiply
Border Down
Bangai-o
Under Defeat
Zero Gunner 2
Axelay on SNES, Twin Bee on NES, Thunder Force IV on MD/GEN, Fantasy Zone on SMS.
And if they count Space Harrier and After Burner II.
Bangai-o
I can't believe I forgot Bangai o! I have never owned the original N64/Dreamcast version, but the few times I've played it were all I needed to make it one of my favorite SHMUPs :P

Yes, I had a typo. Periods go inside of quotation marks like "this."
Admittedly, there's a lot of shoot-em ups I want to, and need to play. Especially on Genesis and Saturn. I really want to dive into the Thunder Force series more.

You do realise i wasn't trying to be clever, only pointing out the name (so that other could maybe look it up!?). The "period" (a "full stop" where i'm from) goes outside of the quotation marks in British English. Thanks.R-type!
I like the Mastersystem version the most although the c64 version is good too.
Armalyte, Uridium, Agony, Xenon II, X-out, Commando. I remember a game on the Genesis called Hellfire which was impossibly difficult, but fun as hell.
Life force by far ^^
Valknut4
I like Life Force too. I remember playing it on my Famicom when I was little and being scared of the "brain with arms" boss :P
Would Gun.Smoke for the NES count?
I loved that game.
GamerEye
Same here. Another game that's better on NES than arcade :D
