So, after the favourite fighting game characters, I thought, why not do one about all gaming? Any genre, any platform, any year.
Here is a top 5 from me:
Solid Snake
The character that we played in MGS1, 2 and 4, not the prequel variations in MGS3 and 5. A rugged, no nonsense but soft at heart (some of those cell convos haha) soldier who will let nothing, not even his own blood, stand in the way of securing peace and freedom. He is the ultimate hero who will sacrifice anything for the right thing.
Commander Shepherd
To be precise, I mean MY Commander Shepherd. The character I guided and crafted across two great games. Mass Effect 2 to however, is the piece de resistance. A game based so heavily on creating relationships across the galaxy and carving them into a successful, galaxy saving team. Through my interactions I actually cared about the characters, one of only a handful of times in my gaming life. Why did I care? Because it felt as if Shepherd was a conduit for me. My choices, my actions, my victories and my failures.
John Marston
Much like Snake before him, Marston is the good guy, albeit one forced into his situation so that his family can be safe. That is a noble aim, even if he was once an outlaw and a criminal. The varioud developers that work under the Rock Star label have crafted a number of memorable characters but Marston is their best, most sympathetic and well realised one to date.
VIVI
I am not quite sure what it was about VIVI from FFIX that I got so much, maybe it was the aesthetics. He is a terrifically drawn character with a satisfying backstory but ultimately, I think it was his play style that got me. Magic based characters are always the best in RPGs and this is one of the best and potentially powerful in FF history.
Trevor Phillips
He has to be here, doesn't he? Of all the madness Rockstar have put into discs for 20 years, Trevor may be the maddest of it all. A sociopath, a killer, a lover of dirty undies and strip joints. It is an absolute joy to play through the Trevor-centric sections, to find him in various positions across the map and to here his nonsensical, crazy monologues. This is a character that lives long in the memory.
