I'm just playing this now as when it came out I didn't have a good enough rig to run it and now that I do and it's available on Steam for $10 I figure what the hell. I've heard such great impressioons about it, the A.I., "best FPS ever!!", etc.

Well, it's.....OK I guess. The shooting is well done overall and can become pretty intense, but I've played now for about two hours and all I'm doing is running down the same bland boring grey corridors over and over and over again, occasionally running into flashbacks and little girls walking around interspersed with killing 5-10 soldiers, ad nauseam. The A.I does have its moments of brilliance, but also more often than not they run like morons directly at me and get mowed down (though I don't know if this changes with the higher difficulty or if their health simply increases). Do the environments change? This is my biggest complaint, I think if there were a bit more variety it'd be much better.

You won't see too much in environmental variety. There's a brief segment near the end where you fight in abandoned apartment buildings so the grey is replaced with a brown. At the time of release this was the biggest complaint with the game... it remains the biggest complaint.

Combat and enemy AI does change as you up the difficulty. On medium or easy they have a tendancy to charge you but if you play on higher difficulties they attempt to take cover and flank you. Gunfights get a bit larger and more intense as the game progresses and they're armed with more powerful weapons, larger numbers, and the occassional armor (you'll see).

That was my problem with FEAR, the game is good and stuff, except if it was like a 4 hour game it wuda been better. It was too much of the same environment for me, game was really well done. I was dying for a day time segment.

I liked the game, I thought the enviorment was rather bland too. I was also expecting way more on the scare factor. I had friends tell me that the moments where Alma appears out of no where were really scary but when I ran into her I was just like "Hi" so i'm a little dissapointed about that. I really wanted a game that brought up the hairs on the back of my neck but there was only like 3 moments in the game that came close, and that just got me by suprise.

I'm feeling the same way too at those parts. I'm kind of like, "wtf??" Not really scary just surprising.Tbh I'm beginning to enjoy it more now that more weapons are available, but yea it'd be great to see more variety in the environments. And I thought Halo CE's Library was bad. On a side note, playing this makes me want to install Max Payne 2.

Yeah, when I finished the game I found myself satisfied with the amount of time spent playing, I now really want to play Project Origion.

it was a slow starter but picks up more the farther you get into it, but it's also a bit dated, hence why it's so cheap

I liked the original game it had intense gun fights and the graphics we're pretty good for its time but it got a bit repetitive after a while.

You're forgetting the time period a bit I think. When FEAR came out it was quite revolutionary as being a fps/horror hybrid. The fact that you're not as scared is simply because you've seen different stuff to compare it to.

FEAR has poor artistic design.

There, THAT is my only complaint.

The AI and fights get more intense with difficulty, the slo-mo is perfectly done, the guns have great impact and you get some very interesting guns later on, the graphics still hold up today, the story is mildly engaging.

Its one of my favoutrite shooters, its a shame FEAR 2 didnt live up to it, and I dont have much faith in 3 either.

Yes definately agree with this, in FEAR 1 the gunplay is excellent. I have yet to find a shooter that feels as spot on brutal as Fear does when shooting someone. I guess Killzone 3 comes close but it's still not on the same level imo.

One of my favorite shooters for sure, but artistic design and variety are not its strong points. The fun in FEAR is the great firefights and horror atmosphere, slow motion shotgun blasting a guy in half is still awesome.

Pretty much how I feel. It's really enjoyable, but only in small spurts.

Many agree that the lighting and effects of FEAR is better than FEAR 2. Idisagree, but in any case, the graphics dont matter when the artistic vision and design flat out suck. FEAR has its intense moments (AI is solid, shootouts are spectacular), but the envrionment is so very bland. The gray and black color palette does work to help establish an eerie and empty environment, but it doesn't hurt to make rooms look like actual rooms that humans have dwelt in.

I recommend that you play the second or third game, man. Those games will satisfy you more, despite their lack of intensity.

FEAR has dull enviroments, yes. But honestly the fights in that game on the higher difficulties were so awesome I didn't care. And I am not a fan of FPS, but once and awhile a developers gets something right where I can enjoy one. Sadly the console ports are so half assed that what made the original version so awesome was missing. No fault of the being on a console, Day One did a horrible job porting them. I played the rest of the series and walked away dsappointed.

The F.E.A.R series is very bland but still quite fun. I did find F.E.A.R 2 to be an improvement, the concept was amazing.

The game gets everything good but severely lacks variety in its environments.

F.E.A.R. 2 PO was my fav of the series. I'm playing through F.E.A.R. 3 right now and it's not the same game mechanics as F2. After about 2 hrs of gameplay in F3 I'm finding it kinda boring.

It's looking a bit dated these days but F.E.A.R remains one of the finest FPS adventures I've ever played through. Rock solid gunplay, enemies who actually put some thought into trying to kill and a great slow-burner of a story - all great. I liked the way the instruction booklet gave you no back story or clue as to who you were or what you were doing, instead leaving it to you to piece the whole mess together.
