I've played Bayonetta recently and really liked it. One of the reasons was the personality of the main character. Most of the female protagonists in games, at least the ones I've played always have rather cold personalities or treat themselves rather seriously. Lightning from FF XIII, Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, 2b from Nier: A or Lara Croft. Of course you've got games where you don't really find out the personalities of the characters like in Portal or Metroid, or ones RPGs where you create your own character, but thos don't really count. What would be some other games with female protagonists are more chill/fun and don't treat themselves too seriously almost all the time. I know Hideki Kamiya is known for more over the top characters, Dante is also kind of similar in that regard, but I'm hoping there is some alternative.

Aurelia, the Baroness from Borderlands the Pre Sequel is a pretty fun character that hardly takes anything seriously.

Asuka from Senran Kagura comes to my mind. (The supporting cast is even more goofy). Juliet from Lolipop Chainsaw is another example. Also Rayne from World of Final Fantasy.

@Yams1980:

"Sunset Overdrives female is funny and very laid back.

Same goes with all female main characters in all the Saints Row 1-4 games of course."

I'm not sure if those should count. They were basically written to be men so their personalities are just impersonating the male counter part. Like the Boss in Saints Row basically becomes a full butch lesbian as a female. From the way they walk to how they talk.

I do like the idea of putting them in the same light as the male version though. I just wish they weren't so lazy with having zero distinction across the genders. Mass Effect does it better. Even if female Shepherd still walks like a man, at least the world treats her like a strong woman.

@Yams1980:Thanks for those, I'll give them a look.

@RSM-HQ: Sadly, I lack the platform to play that. It's one of the games I always considered playing if I ever got a ps4. Thing is there are only two other exclusives I'd want to play.

@joshyjess: I understand the game is different than in the first two Borderlands games? The protagonists were silent in those.

@yammireckorrdsan: Thanks, might check out some of those as well.

Alyx Vance of Half-Life 2 series is really great, arguably one of the best female characters in a game. Smart, witty, serious at appropriate times, attractive, and comes with an awesome robot dog. A really impressive thing they were able to write her into a game where the playable character has literally zero dialogue.

Bioware writes a lot of great characters into their games as well. Most come off serious, but there are some light and fun ones too:

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition has Sera, a bubbly and mischievous elf. Cassandra is a pretty grim, serious character but I found it really rewarding to "unlock" her kind, fun, and even playful side as the game progressed. Arguably one of the better, more fleshed out female characters of late that fits the "all business" female archetype while not being a stereotype of it.
  • Mass Effect series. I found Tali to be a great character. She is very naive and almost innocent, especially in ME 1, and a lot of her conversations are really entertaining. As the series goes on she becomes a bit more serious, tragic even, but I found her a nice reprieve from the whole "the galaxy is doomed" theme.

If you chose Kassandra for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, you chose wisely because that lady is pretty awesome. Yeah it gets serious at appropriate times, but for the most part she is cracking jokes, acting tough, and generally enjoying the life of a mercenary.

@javik: If you're on P.C. I believe PSNow is usable, sign for the free trail and give it a go, the first Gravity Daze is available.

Not a fan of PSNow personally but it'll give you a chance to try it out, and free leaves little room to not give a try.

*And no problem, I barely buy exclusives on PS4 anyhow, most the ones bragged are not my kind of games. Gravity Daze however is just a good series by one of my favorite teams at Sony Japan studios.

@ Javik Yeah, Borderlands Pre Sequel takes a whole new approach to their characters, giving them a wide variety of personalities. This actually makes the game much more re-playable. You want to hear what each character is going to say in different situations. My favorite is probably Jack (the Doppleganger) and Clap Trap.

I would say Yuna from FFX-2. Half the time she was jolly and the other as serious.

Baynetta is pretty much reigning queen of not too serious female protagonists. She is just so much fun.
