I never liked 8 as much as 7 or 9, and traded it to a friend years ago. However, just yesterday in fact, I found a used version of 8 complete with original case and manual so I picked it up for a whopping $4.99. Dunno if I'll ever get around to playing it anytime soon, but if nothing else its now in my collection again. I loved 9, but the card-based summon system of 8 was what truly turned me off. I'm not much for card-based systems in the least. I do think that its worth playing, and I surely will start it up again in the future. I say go for it.
i also played 7 and 9 and thought they were pretty sick (9 is much better tho imo). with 8, i thought the card summons were weird but bearable. it was having to stall forever while drawing items from bosses that was a little much for me..I never liked 8 as much as 7 or 9, and traded it to a friend years ago. Cry0Tek
I started playing this game a while ago but i didn't get too far because i wasnt a big fan of the drawing system. however, im now tempted to pick it back up. can anyone tell me if the game gets better? or if the drawing system grew on you?IrishEggif you cant love the drawing system, then dont play this game. cause it wont get any better. lol. but if you can accept the drawing system, be more forgiving about (more patient), then ff8 easily becomes one of the best ff games out there. everything about this game is good imo except the drawing system. especially if you like romance in your video games.
It is absolutely worth playing. I can't tell you that the drawing system will grow on you. It's more...... worth doing than it is enjoyable. The good news is, drawing and grinding can be one in the same in this game. Keep in mind that some bosses hold exclusive draws though. You might want to look up what they are or check at the beginning of each battle.
Aside from that, FFVIII is an amazing game, and definitely one of my favorites in the series and overall.
PLAY THIS GAME. i feel you about the drawing system, but if you can look past it you are in for a treat. the gamehas agreat story, great characters and goodgameplay. i absolutely love the card game (i think its called triple triad or something like that), its a ton of fun going around the world trying to find all of the rare cards.
Only draw in the beginning and rare spells you really want, and of course summons. If you get bored, stop drawing. The game is too easy if you draw 100 of all the strongest magic. And if you own more than 50 of a magic, don't be afraid to use it during battle.
Remember that you can refine items into magic, which yo're going to want to do instead of drawing, especially with elemental spells.
Is it worth playing? Yes, of course. It's a good game. If you ask me, it's not the best in the series (probably the least good of the modern FF's), but it's still worth playing.
you could just give it another try. i honestly can't remember that much of FFVIII even though it has been only one and a half year since i have played it the last time.
i left off on disc 3 and couldn't get back into it for some reason up until now.
it is IMO no way near as good as FFIX (even though most will disagree) since FFIX was far more memorable in every aspect.
Final Fantasy 8 is truelly underrated and I insist that you should give it a try just for the story alone. Has the most addicting card-based mini game that I've played in any of the Final Fantasy's. As for the draw system, don't believe it was ever an issue when playing. I think the biggest draw-backs to the game is that trying to get all the cards is a very long and very difficult process. Also, didn't care for the fact that all the enemies in the game will be leveled to certain degree depending on what level you are. The junction system is also not very user friendly but it's not difficult to figure out. Still, people over-dramatize the game as the worst one in the series mostly because of it's predecessor. Then again, I'm not sure what people were expecting... Final Fantasy VII? No, this is Final Fantasy VIII.
Simply put, yes. VIII has in my opinion, the best soundtrack in the entire series. Aside from that, it gets increasingly better as the game goes on. The towns and locations have far more personality and life to them than most games I've ever played. Each place has it's own feel, it's own style and it's own thing going on. The game itself is great, challenging and wraps up pretty well in the end. It's definitely a bit different than the others, but I promise you that if you play it through, you'll definitely love it in the end.
To be honest, I liked FF7's materia more than the Draw system and GFs.
Drawing magic from opponents isn't the only option, although it can be the fastest. If you see a name in the draw list like "Siren," get it, because that's your one chance in the game to get that Guardian Force.
Once you get more GFs, you can teach a GF abilities like "Item Refine" or "Mid Magic refine" or "Card refine." With those abilities you can refine magic or other items from things in you inventory like magic stones or the Ifrit card. Powerful magics can only be refined from special items, but it's better than nothing.
Oh yeah, and it's one of the best games I've ever played.
