Running since 2004, Monster Hunter focus was creating multiplayer action with heavy RPG elements never seen before. And was well known for creating some great and evolving radical A.I. and intense encounters from 2nd G onwards

Has inspired many Action RPGs across the years, including From Softwares Demon's Souls and its successor Dark Souls.

Seven generations of games, and 50 million units sold. Monster Hunter is a series still offering new ideas and some of the best enemy A.I. to this very day.

Whether one started with World, or suffered through the Egg quests of old. Struggles with the fearsome Rājan, and getting bearings with the Gore Magalas frenzy virus. It's a series many have drastically different, and fond memories for.

Feel free to share your memories on the franchise and see how the series moves forward.

I feel this is a blog and but it doesn't bother me you didn't go through the proper channels to give it the blog icon.

I am left wondering what you are basing some of your statement on though.

Monster Hunter focus was creating multiplayer action with heavy RPG elements never seen before

Can you elaborate on these rpg elements and how they were unique?

Has inspired many Action RPGs across the years

Dark Souls is an action adventure an not an rpg I should point out. Can you name any of the games it has inspired and how?

still offering new ideas

Can you describe these ideas?

I only ask because I can't simply take your word that this game is unique. I require that you explain why that is.

What's worse than a thread no-one cares about?

A thread which is trolled or diverted which I didn't do you might take note of.

I actually would like to know what it is about this game which you like. The fact that you like it has no relevance to me.

Cheers bra.

@jackamomo: Given you plenty of detailed rundowns about Monster Hunter in past discussions, also recall you being sarcastic for how in-depth I have been. Backtrack a little will do you wonders ol' chap.

The intent is for fans of the series to reminisce and mention about the series considering its milestone anniversary. Even hinted at starting up a nice discussion for MH:W Iceborne maybe.

I feel this is a blog

How so? I'm suggesting the community mention what they enjoyed and memories with the series. That seems less like a blog and more open to discussion of this game series. It's unfortunate that you disagree_

Dark Souls is an action adventure an not an rpg

Action Adventure doesn't use stat calculations, weight adjustment, or abundance of elemental effects, and area effects for (builds).

These are basics used in Dungeons and Dragons, most RPG games template. And the easiest way to identify an RPG game. Your Ultima series also follows this template heavily (I know how much you love Ultima VII).

Believe what makes you happy however, but you won't find many that agree.

Commonly dubbed Action RPGs, a hybrid bracket of RPG game.

Not to be confused with other great RPGs like Divinity: Original Sin II, Suikoden, and Chrono Trigger, just to name a few.

Drastically different game experiences. Most known either as Tactical RPG, or just simply Turnbase RPG. I understand the confusion, but that's just how expansive games have come along since the old days.

What's worse than a thread no-one cares about?

Hohoho. The rain on Monster Hunters parade are we?

I'll give you 4/10 for effort.

Can always use the achieve search in the forum. Is as simple as putting in the games name, and the users name. It's how I find a lot of older threads for relevance and context.

i only got on board since Tri. Initially it made no sense until i saw one really sage piece of advice: "put your weapon away". weapons like the lance and greatsword suddenly made sense.

I usually stick with the lance and greatsword but the charge blade has grown on me.

im currently playing gen ultimate on and off on the switch. world in on my to get list but GU is a big big game. it may be a while :P.

great series of games. a bit odd if you havent played anything like them before but it all makes sense. well mostly :P.

@osan0: The only weapon that ever benefited for not being unequipped was the sword and shield. It's a interesting mechanic to get use to. Monster Hunter is a series that has a learning curve but is very satisfying when it clicks.

World was my first MH game.

I had a great time with it, went into it with a friend who has lots of MH experience and that made the learning curve much gentler.

still need to beat a couple of the elder dragons or whatever they are called

@with_teeth26: Nice to read, MH is very jolly with friends. Even with the excellent gameplay probably wouldn't enjoy the series as much without the company I keep. MH is just made for coop_

And you are likely thinking of Elder Dragons unless your last on the hit list is DevilJho and/or the novel events like The Witcher quest and Greatest Jagras.

Much like DevilJho not all apex predators are classified as Elder Dragons but for World it is the majority. Would like Ukamurubasu in Iceborne (shovel-chin yeti from 2nd G), we don't have enough ice monsters in World

@RSM-HQ: the charge blade is not too bad to leave equipped either. you can move pretty quickly when in sword and shield mode, though it is slower than moving around unequipped.

i think capcom have definitely improved on the learning curve since i started. tri on the wii (my first MH) had the great jaggi (i fainted twice...im not proud of it :P), qurupeco (nearly ran out of time) then barroth (left be battered and bruised until i switched from the SnS to the lance).

all 3 hit harder in tri than in tri ultimate also. barroth in particular was neutered a good bit going from 3 to 3 ultimate. starting out the more modern games definitely give you more room to make mistakes and ramps it up at a nicer pace now.

@osan0: Oh no. . A friend of mine mains the Great Sword and have a lot of respect for Charge Blade as well. I'm aware of shield dash likewise

Was more referring to Sword and Shield have the unequip roll and can use items like potions while equipped. Every weapon has some form of benefit, the only weapon that got a substantial downgrade was the Insect Glaive because it was a bit too over powered in 4/4G. And being the newest added weapon in the series would have caused some balancing needed.

I'm personally a Long Sword and Dual Blades user myself. Have been since Portable 2nd G. Plenty of styles to fit different Hunters strategies.

I still didn't play a single game in the series. Thinking about buying world for the PS4. Are rest of the games in the franchise 3DS only or are they exclusive to other handheld/console?

It's gone through many platforms but originated on the PlayStation 2 with MH, MHG, and MH2, and followed on PlayStation Portable for most the series.

World is likely the best one to start with if not fond of handhelds. It's also getting a huge content expansion this year anyhow.

4G on 3DS being probably my favorite game in the franchise. Something about playing with others right next to you is something a chat room just doesn't replicate either.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is on PS3, best version of the 3 series, but servers are taken down and can no longer be played for multiplayer, which I believable was even for its time Japan only anyhow.

Would not go into the series on a whim, better to look into the games and see if you're interested. MH does not focus on conversations or set-pieces. The A.I. is radical and calculating, the combat slow but tactical, and level design set for multiple posibilities.

Started with Tri on Wii. Didn't get my friends to join me, so I didn't play much of it. When it came for 3DS, however, my friends showed interest and we played together for over 400 hours. Since then we also played 4 Ultimate and Generations on 3DS a shitload. We also got World for PC, but were dissapointed by the lack of content. That game seriously needs a G rank. Lack of content aside though, World is an awesome game.

I think I may have rented Monster Hunter for the PS2 back in the day because while I don’t recall playing it the much I watched some videos on it recently and some of the early stuff looks familiar. I bought and still have Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii. Only played a very small bit of it but it ended up getting put on the back burner for whatever reason. I probably got sidetracked with some other game. I did like what I was playing though.

Monster Hunter World was basically my “first” MH game though as I dove right into it when it came out and kept up with it right through it and into the endgame. I absolutely loved it and have put hundreds of hours into it and still keep coming back to it from time to time. Am very hyped for the Iceborne dlc coming out for it later on. I’d like to return to Tri and play it some more and would also like to pick up Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for the Switch as well for the more old school MH experience.

Did you own Devil May Cry 3? An exclusive demo of Monster Hunter was bundled with every launch copy of DMC3.

The demo offered eight low tier quests and access to the Hunters room/ village.

Iceborne is getting a new rank and its not uncommon for the series to wait for the expanded edition for it. Sadly Capcom are ditching the name G-Rank stating it comes across as "intimidating to new Hunters", the name is changed to Master Rank. I hope this is just for name and not removing what G-Rank usually offers.

Have the game on PS4 and P.C. probably going to stick with PS4 for the most part. Has all my hunter friends and found randoms pretty annoying on both P.C. and PS4. Which is a shame because previously MH community was pretty awesome, that's what happens when the install-base grows.

While very rare from personal experience I do warn those on P.C. look out for those corrupting your game. Best to carefully check if a Gathering Hub has one, and leave without saving if so. This not a P.C. only issue, and did also happen on PSP/ 3DS games with savegame editors.

If a Hunter is offering unlimited items or has a HR999. Better to leave and advise your friends do the same! It's a Nexus mod that damages data files. It triggers when the player either does a quest with you or hands you an item. The consequences are you can no longer play online once detected. Once noticed this is not linked to your save data anymore but Capcom/ or Steam assumes your Steam profile is a Hacker. I think a work around now exists, but still better to play it safe.

to my shame i still haven't dipped my toe into monster hunter's world. i was close to picking up mhw last year, waiting for a price drop, then i bought a switch and a gaming pc and my backlog went ballistic. i'll definitely pick it up at some point but i still have nioh sat unopened in its plastic wrapping giving me dirty looks every time i think about buying another combat based game.

As you stated plenty of games and many offering great gameplay/ experiences. I still need to sneak in Dishonored 2 and Ultima VII after I'm done with DMC5.

@jackamomo: Please be relevant to the thread and not be consistently spiteful, you have made two negative posts here just because you're seeking attention. We get it

I like very popular and advertised game

Not very knowledgeable are we? Before World I wouldn't call Monster Hunter "popular" or even globally marketed. MH had a regional following due to solid mechanics, A.I. and level design. Europe sold pretty well for 3 and 4.

The demo mentioned above was bundled with a more popular game series despite being released beforehand, all because the first MH game was not meeting sales expectations. So Capcom did what they could to expand the Monster Hunter audience.

Overall MH was deemed out of touch by the global market that wanted more realistic or cinematic games. They sell good, but popular is a far stretch. Popular is games that at average sell six million copies; give-or-take. Grand Theft Auto, Mario and Tetris sell in the hundreds of millions as an example.

Also you claimed "no-one cared" so now you're contradicting yourself. At least be consistent with your thought process.

Then refuse answer any questions I have about it because I'm "too lazy" to look up his comments from last year.

Ironically that works both ways. You are too lazy to use a search feature. And while you can claim I too am lazy, it's more that I noticed your post was intentionally spiteful. So any effort falls on blind eyes.

This thread is about Monster Hunter, not Jackamomos tantrums_

So if you refuse to contribute in any way. Why exactly are you still here?

I started playing it at a pretty dark time in my life with the guidance of a friend (4U) and haven't looked back since. It's astounding how much raw content you get with each installment. It's a level of value you don't really see in modern AAA games. Favorite monster I've encountered thus far is Zinogre. It has the coolest battle cry for a creature I've ever heard and its design is just top notch.

(I been meaning to post this thread but kept getting distracted lol)

I'm not much of a Monster Hunter fan, but I only played "3" Monster Hunter games in my gaming life time. In this order: (from first to last)

  1. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)
  2. Monster Hunter Generation (3DS)
  3. Monster Hunter World (PC)

I did played the first Monster Hunter game on PS2 many years ago but I only rented from Blockbusters (when BB was still a thing) and it was okay but it didn't click into me mainly due to school and only had so little time with any gaming so I pretty much ran out of time trying to fully like it. I find the handheld versions more enjoyable since I can take it anywhere I go but the latest Monster Hunter World is by far my favorite and it's been a very long time since I played a Monster Hunter game in my home and my own time as well. All in all, Monster Hunter World is so much fun on PC, I'm amaze it runs good on the hardware I have.

I'm a fan of this one as well, espically its Ashu counterpart. The slick Black and Red lightning is awesome. Certainly one of the highlights in the MH3 series. I love knocking him over and using the bug net on his back. With any luck one of the returning Monsters in Iceborne. 4U/4G is also a great one to invest in.

Not too shocking. Majority of Monster Hunter games are well optimised outside the Generation/ X series, which was handled by a separate team. It's also why the new monsters have a drastically different style to them. For World they certainly took advantage of the more powerful hardware with P.C. and surprisingly consistent on console.

MH4 series was known to run at a smooth 60FPS on 3DS, outside the town hubs that is. Which was quite the accomplishment.

Has every flagship monster of the series (cover art monster) as well as the original Elder Dragon, Miraboreasu/Fatalis.

I get that. In World the tutorial section is also a bit of a slog. While in 4/4G we battled an Elder Dragon, Daren Mohran right from the start (gigantic sand whale) and it's overall really cool

For better or worse all Monster Hunter games follow a retro-game learning curve.

Doesn't hide the games strengths, but does leave the player to figure it out yourself. Only ever explaining the most basic of features.

If you have a friend to play with? makes all the difference. MH has a lot of layers, and when it clicks, it's a fantastic gaming experience.

@raining51:

Define "better". You've given no reason why "no one cares" or "4x better". The lack of context is frivolous.

Think you're being a tad transparent considering with over fifty games Rockman/ Megaman has never reached the following of Monster Hunter. And considering over the years Capcom have put far more money into Rockman that's saying a lot.

Just a suggestion, but think of evaluating why others are enjoying a franchise outside personal interests/ bias.

Monster Hunter plays nothing like the volume of series you mention and has completely different gameplay features and systems. I'm not exactly a Rockman/ MegaMan fan (original/ X/ Legends/ Network) but I don't exactly go out my way stating "no one cares" or anything in that manner. It's for a very different audience in most cases, and has inspired many series in its own right, have a lot of respect for the Blue Bomber despite my disinterest_

A lot of people enjoy Monster Hunter for being exceedingly replayable, coop experience, with some of the best level design and radical A.I. in the gaming industry for an Action RPG. Non of which I would call a Legends or Network strength.

If you couldn't personally get into MH? that's perfectly fine. But that doesn't make you the majority, or even a deciding factor to its success. MH does very well for people who want MH, and many who are joining for the first time.

MH also has a dedicated team that has worked on every major instalment. Why would they ditch the passion and love for something they created to work on a Rockman game? That makes no sense.
