I have always watched people play fighting games in sheer awe and have always wanted to get into them. The only real problem with this is the fact that most fighters have a steep learning curve and require extremely precise knowledge of its many systems and combos. I have dabbled in fighters in the past (Soul Calibur series, SFIV, and a bit of MvC2) but I have never actually gotten very good at any. So I would like to know of some good fighting games that serve as a jump off point into the whole world of fighters. Also any tips on playing said games would be extremely helpful as well.

I used to find 2D fighters hard to pull of moves and such, but the Guilty Gear series and the KOF series got me into the genre very quickly. Just take a few minutes in training mode checking out characters command lists and train chaining combos together.

ha, join the club. I'm terrible at fighting games, and I've been playing SF on consoles for years.

The XBLA/PSN title Skullgirls has a very helpful tutorial mode that should get you well versed in the basic aspects of most 2D fighting games.

I'm terrible at fighting games, too. Heck, I'm terrible at a lot of games. But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying them.

Start at Street Fighter Turbo, or Super. There is a lot of positional strategys. I took a long break from fighters, and when i started playing them again, I was able to beat a lot of my friends at SF4 using only old school strategys.

start with a basic fighting game, say, Street Fighter 2 (the later versions are a bit harder) , and just practice, even in 2 player if you need to.

sometimes you just need to try and memorize some moves from the characters of your choice, and practice over and over, there is no easy way around it.

Practice makes perfect and just playing a specific fighting game will make you better and better at it. Probably the fighting game I'm best at are the KOF series games; Kyo, King and Mai are my death squad and I've beat many people using them. However, throw me in a match of any mortal kombat game and I'll be butchered alive. In addition to that, I always found the special finishing moves in MK to be the most condoluted and difficult moves to pull off in any fighting game.

On a side note, I just bought Persona 4 Arena today, and from what I've heard it's pretty accessable to any skill level.

"Soul Calibur II" is the best ground-floor game, I think. Easy to pick up and play, fun to master as you get deeper. The GameCube edition with Link as a playable is my favorite...

:D

It's a game that doesn't discourage people new to the genre, and yet can be a very deep, complex fighter as you get more into it. Perfect. Kiliak ROCKS!!!

Completely forgot to mention Soul Calibur 2! Played the CRAP out of that on release and still play it off and on in multiplayer to this day. Also I noticed a lot of mentions towards KOF and was wondering which one to start with. I started looking and there are a LOT of games in the series, so which has the best gameplay of them all?

KoF is a good series, but it's rather advanced.

If you want to go 2D, I would definitely suggest "Street Fighter Alpha III" ... KoF, that's a tough call for me because I'm not as versed. "Guilty Gear XX" is pretty cool, too.

THAT'S it... It was the other guy who was in Poland in that conversation about the cost of PS2 games... I remember now.

Portugal would be cool! That's one country my work hasn't carried me to yet!
