If I go through the main story without too many side quests, is it around 40 or so hours?

yeah, probably 40-5oish hourse if you don't do many side-quests or level grinding.

If you do, however, the game is REALLY long. :o

Thanks for the feedback. By the way, I'm 2 hours in and I freakin love this game already. The battle system is really fun and something different for a change.

i played through the game, with nearly all of the sidequests, plus beating the 1,000,000 hit point dragon, and beating most of that final optional dungeon in about 90 hours. A lot of that extra time was grinding to get strong enough to fight in that last dungeon, though

FF XII has a lot of grinding requirements. You always had to grind a little bit to get through a Final Fantasy title but FF XII takes too far. I'm playing the game at the moment, i've been doing sidequests when I find them and moving ahead with the story when I have nothing else to do or can't beat any of the available marks. I'm currently at 92 hours and I'm thinking I have another ten to twenty before I put the game down. But if your just playing the story through I'd say you can probably breeze through the main game in forty to sixty hours.

I did enough of the hunts to get the good items from them. I did not beat the insanely difficult dragon at the end since I didn't see any point to it. I did all the sidequests (except for the last 20 or so hunts) and I did a decent amount of grinding (I have being without spending $$ in RPGs!) and I spent about 70 hours on it. While I found FFVII had a more enthralling, gripping experience, I was definitely entertained more playing FFXII.

Well, I have played it a bit more just to make sure it sucks and it does. I'd say I played it for half an hour.

I have over 200 hours and I'm still not done with EVERYTHING. I recommended the game to a friend and he shot through it in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if he did it in under 40. He kept asking me why he didn't have any good equipment :).

At least a little. If you commit to doing some hunts between missions you should be fine.

You'll have to grind quite a bit if you're going for 100%.

I topped 100 hours getting everything I could, only to be frustrated that I couldn't get some spear or something unless I skipped certain random chests through out the game :|.

It took me around 50 hours or more to beat Final Fantasy XII but I didn't want to rush the game.

You can't play half an hour of Final Fantasy and make a desent judgement.... It takes time to get into that game.
