Crystal Chronicles is already out and Crisis Core will come out in a couple of weeks. But just wondering, is anyone even hyped for these? Seems like no one is talking about them.

Anyway, I'm excited and looking forward to playing these. How about anyone else?

I was looking forward to the one on the DS. The scores have been postive for the most part but I'll wait till the verdict comes on this site.

I just bought Crystal Chronicles, and I'll post up some impressions sometime.

EDIT: Scratch that, the hinge on my DS cracked. :( Oh well, at least it seems like Nintendo will repair the unit for free...or at worst replace it with a new DS. I'll try to get some play time in before I ship it out, though.

Crystal Chronicles maybe. Crisis Core no. They really need to give the FF7 thing a rest.

Crisis Core i'm hyped for, crystal chronicles not so much. The first Crystal Chronicles was bad. So i'm not buying the new ones.

Not interested. Not even a little bit.

Given Square's success with spinoffs (particularly those with the FF monicker attached to them) I'll be steering clear of both games. And especially Crystal Chronicles. I played the first and won't bother with a sequel, no matter how well it's received.

This one doesn't have a lot to do with the GC title, as it seems to be more directly story driven, and single-player oriented. I worked my way through the first dungeon, and the mechanics/control aren't as restrictive as the GC title was, at least. We'll see how the character growth/development will go, but like most Akitoshi Kawazu games, there's an emphasis on building items throughout the game.

I'm somewhat interested in Crystal Chronicles but just barely. And I couldn't care less about Crisis Core. It's kind of funny how once upon a time I was the biggest Squaresoft fan boy on earth, and now all of those old franchises just make me sick. I still like Dragon Quest from the Enix side, but overall I just don't care anymore.

All series have to end eventually. I think final fantasy has done enough to be held with high regard. I would not mind a new chrono trigger game or a new secret of mana game. Like you said maybe starting a new series all together.

Understandable. Other than FF X-2, FF XI, and FF Tactics, I can't think of any other FF spin off title worth the plastic it was printed on.

Your post made me laugh. Worth the plastic it was printed on ha ha ha. Square enix should stop making crappy spin offs and do good games. I think this era for square enix shall be called rehashed and spin off era.

Maybe Square-Enix is doing all these spin-offs for easy money, obviously. You know, to fund their main projects? ;)

But they sell a heck-of-a-lot, even the crappy ones. But out of ten bad re-hashes, I think, to be fair, half of them are worth getting. That I will give them their just due and recognition. For example, the DQ games and the new Valkaryie Profile game for the DS will definitely be worth it and I'm looking forward to FFIV as well as the possibility of FFV and FFVI remakes. Re-hashes and milking, yes...but still good games.

All the reviews say FFVII Crisis Core is probably the best spin-off of the recent FF's, so I'm going to check it out. And FF CC is getting good reviews so that got me interested.

I think overall, Square-Enix does make pretty good games. I just hate their overpricing.

Hmm, given the game a bit of time tonight, both in the story mode and multiplay mode. The story mode is cool because of the cutscene work with voice acting (giving a hint perhaps of the quality of the audio that'll be used when the FFIV DS title comes our way) in how it tries to breath a bit of life into the game's world.

Multiplay, however, is kind of cool because it takes the main quest, removes the story, and allows you to make characters to go through it more directly. It seems to make enemies a bit more difficult, and it also emphasizes trying to get at least one other partner around, though for reasons not as crippling as the original Crystal Chronicles. Instead of needing other characters to lug around a chalice to keep you active, your need for other characters in other tribes stems more from traits they carry that make combat/exploration easier and more possible. In addition , you have the available option to take Side Quests from the king in the nearby town, which are fun from the standpoint of giving isolated, relatively short challenges...and also from the loot you get afterwards.

It's a bummer that the game doesn't have the stat building that the original game had, but in regards to the core combat, the game easily has more going for it than the GC game did, and being able to switch between different spells, as well as executing them in combat is relatively easy, even when soloing in the game.

I'm fairly happy thus far, and we'll see how much further I get before I have to ship my DS in early next week.

I've got more playtime in, though it's all in the Multiplay mode:

The game definitely has watered down aspects about it from the console version of the game. You don't have the same level of control over the character creation process (all you do is pick a tribe, gender, and give your character a name to start), and as a result, the whole family dynamic from the original is gone.

However, in its place comes customization and modification in other ways, namely through equipment purchasing/creation, and buying/finding other stat upgrades. It's a nice touch that every piece of equipment you buy is visually represented on your character.

I've played a bit as a Clavat, and then tried out a Selkie character, and while the Selkies have their weaknesses (slow firing rate of arrows, difficulty in getting shots just right in close range), they have crazy manuvering ability due to the ability to double jump. This essentially allows well played selkies to bypass large sections of dungeons if they need to, or at least the ability to backtrack/explore easily for the party.

This sort of dramatic difference between these two tribes shows how different multiplayer will probably function in this game..given that I have a chance to try it out with someone.

I'll get more impressions later.

Thanks for the impressions Skylock.

I also got the game and even though I'm angry at Square's ridiculous pricing, I still think it's worth it.

I played a few hours and I am impressed. I actually like it better than Zelda Phantom Hourglass. The game is more fast-paced and the d-pad controls make it easier to control. I'm a Diablo II and Titan Quest fan so this is the best hack-n-slash on the DS so that's why I like the game so much. Graphically, it's some of the best I've seen. I'm amazed the DS can handle this plus the voice-overs. And the single player is pretty good. I haven't tried multiplayer but so far, I'm digging it.

What I don't like is the AI. It's kind of a minor annoyance, but they are practically useless. I hate baby-sitting them. I'd rather have it where you can switch them during battle rather than having them on the screen with you. Switching them with the touch screen is kind of a pain. Also, the magic using with the touch screen is sort of a pain. But I don't really have too much trouble with the magic system.

The best part I like about this game is how your characters change with the equipment you put on. I think it's pretty cool to see.

I'll post some more as I keep playing it.

P.S.: The DS Lite sucks for this game. The D-pad is uncomfortable for some reason. But the DS Phat is very comfortable and I can control it better.

Heh, I haven't gotten that far in Single PLayer...been spending all of my time in Multiplay mode (solo) as my selkie character, and having a blast with just that. :)

I just got the new Game Informer. Their reviews of Crisis Core seems to indicate that its pure sewage whose only value is to rabid fans of the franchise. Both reviewers agreed that the movies add a lot to the mythology, but the gameplay sections are a bad joke (both emphasized that one could beat the game without actually looking at the screen, simply by mashing the X button).

Granted, Game Informer isn't the most reliable of reviewers, but their reviews dovetail with the import impressions I have read. Sadly, Squenix's habit of releasing FF7 themed garbage makes sense since sales numbers indicate that there are quite a few people in the world who want familiar characters but are totally indifferent to the quality of the game those characters happen to be slapped into.

I don't know, I somewhat like Crisis Core so far. Granted, the "new" ideas are abhorrent, but the core gameplay looks solid enough. I played as far as the Ifrit, and that wasn't doable with button mashing. Dunno, need to play some more.
