B.T.W. Final Fantasy 13 looks absolutely INSANE!!!!

My favorite game in the series is IX. Beautiful graphics, a deep, immersing story, lovable characters and the system for managing spells and abilities was simple. Granted, the ending could have been a litte better and less abrupt, but the hours and hours of terrific gameplay leading up to it more than made up for it.
My favorite characters were Barret and Vivi.
Barret was tough, funny and cool. Plus with the gun arm, he reminds me of Samus Aran.
Vivi is really cool looking, and he has an enigmatic personality and backstory. Friendly, timid, curious about where he's going and where he's been. Not too mention, he grows up to be the most powerful black mage in the world.

Funny you mention that, I didnt enjoy the game but absolutely loved the ending (I'm a sucker for happy romantic endings)
As for my favorite, I thought VIII was sheer brilliance, Junction system is one of the most versatile of any game.

There appears to be two kinds of Final Fantasy fans....
those who like XII and those who know what a good FF game actually consists of.
My favourites (havent completed pre PS1 FFs yet, I have them all but never got around to playing them :( )
VII- I didn't think it could get any better than IX. I don't care what anyone says about this game being overrated. No game can beat the epicness, scope and sheer brilliance of this game. Except for the polygonal sprites, this game hasn't aged. The pre-rendered graphics keep it ageless.
IX- First PS1 FF ever played (I actually played X first), the graphics absolutely blew me away, one of the big pluses in the game
X- First FF game ever played. I would have never got interested in FF if the game shop hadn't been sold out of Medal of Honour!
VIII- I was bored for the first 15 hours of this but its a PS1 FF and is therefore still a classic.
X-2- Haven't completed, I really wanted to complete the catacombs under Bevelle but its impossible and havent picked it up since
Crystal Chronicles - WTF!?
I've played some of FFVI, I liked what it played and whenever I go back home, I'll start playing the pre-PS1 games!

Oh man, you cant seriously compare VIII with XII, its like comparing apples and rotten oranges. Lets just say I have made my views on FFXII known from back in the PS2 Forum days, I think it was an absolute disaster character wise. Very strong start and by far the most mature FF plot but has anyone felt a connection to the characters? Balthier and Basch were great and I wanted to see more of everyone. Vaan gets worst FF lead hands down.
Please Squeenix, go back to developing your characters and keep up with the more mature plots, we might be on to a winner if they decide to develop XIII that way.

compare ? i dont compare anything. before i played FFXII, my favorite FF game was FFVIII. IX was disappointment and X was good but not that good to be my favorite. FFVIII had charm unlike other FFs for me. but after i played FFXII, i had so much fun because of its great gameplay, great scenery and the best overall music.
Vaan and Penelo didnt bother me one bit because they acted as real kids. Also outside of cities you dont have to use Vaan nor see him. Balthier, Basch were great characters and like everyone else Balthier was my favorite character in FFXII.
The world was huge and beautiful that made me enjoyed every moment of the game. The musics were the best as overall, i mean FFVIII, FFX had certain musics that are the best but in overall i enjoyed FFXII musics more because i didnt hear those good musics just few times like FFVIII or FFX, i heard great musics with every step in the game. I call that genius. Same happened in Chrono Cross and Shadow of the Colossus.
Also story and movies that explains it were great imo. Especially movies were at last out of japanese acting, which is horrible. even FF7AC had terrible acting in it even though it was animation.
So overall it had everything great imo. Vaan's unrelated jokes in different situations and others expressions suited so well.
also about character developments, instead of being a drama by explaining all characters' sad past, this way was far better imo. they make hilarious games, great dialogues then add dramatic past for character development and i find this way as weak. thats done to be done and sadly all jrpgs are like that. why everything has to turn out a drama ? Final Fantasy XII is the best Final Fantasy game to date, imo and i look forward to FFXIII because FFXII's gameplay, environment and musics.

Those who know? Get off of your high horse and come back to earth. Time to accept that different people have different tastes.

When you put it this way I agree with most of the things you said. I stand by my point on character development, its not necessarily a sad past I want to see, Balthier, Basch and Ashe are highly unlikely to have had a tragic past, but I want to see the past! The parts that explained the characters of VII and VIII at an early age gave an insight into their lives which in turn made me feel connected to them, not like they are some generic amalgamation of skills and animation.
I like the direction the game has taken, small change in X and a radical jump in XII. The series needed it to attract new fans and it succeeded at that while perhaps some of the older fans felt shock and horror at this, not me. What disappointed me is that Squeenix are master storytellers and in this one they had their strongest framework ever. I understand the game was plot rather than character driven, which also is a great move BUT what they did was completely drive out character development. At the end of the game Vaan and Penelo were still kids, Fran at a standstill and the others had more to offer than they did.

No can do....
And what exactly is the order that I played them in got to do with anything?
the only FF I have played and not enjoyed is mystic quest. i dont consider crystal chronicle games part of the FF series at all. i started with III on the snes. every game after has been enjoyable. i did not complete XIII or XII, although i did enjoy XII to a degree. the story just couldnt keep me drawn in. as for XIII i did not like the mechanics at all. id still like to complete them both.

your original comment is pretty much just goading anyone who enjoyed XII into an argument. its snooty and holier than thou.
Final Fantasy XIII hasn't been released yet...
And I'm hardly snooty about a computer game...and certainly not "holier than thou". Its just a computer game and I don't respect the opinions of those who like XII, oh well...and don't take it so seriously.

Its not too hard to guess they were talking about VIII ;)

dont worry, noone is respecting you either ;)
a past without drama is mostly impossible, because noone cares about a normal, fun past, showing how a character was playing hide and seek, how happy he/she was etc. if that character had sad events after those happy times then it becomes attractive for players but thats too much cliche and boring now, imo. i dont care their dramatic pasts because all of them are the same. like you gave example of ff7 and 8, they had both tragic events in their past, or 10, in short all. except Grandia 3 i didnt see any past without drama and in grandia 3 the character's past is shown only once if i remember correctly. and in Vagrant Story there was no hero past either but it was so much greater than any FF.When you put it this way I agree with most of the things you said. I stand by my point on character development, its not necessarily a sad past I want to see, Balthier, Basch and Ashe are highly unlikely to have had a tragic past, but I want to see the past! maybe they should have released FFXII with a different name so it wouldnt be judged like this?
FF VI and XII. FFXII felt like the true spiritual successor to VI, everything except for the shallow story and characters. But I'm talking about the design and art style of the games.
I really felt storywise FFVI was the most memorable. As for gamewise and concept, I think FFXII really showcased what Final Fantasy is truly about: kings, princess`, chocobos, moogles, airships, knights, dragons, huge worlds, towns, summons, etc. Story and characters were rather weak, but everything else about the game was right on from a concept and design point of view. I'm not talking about the battle-system, of course, since that's all based on taste. But from a design point of view, it was the best.
As for favorite characters? Terra from FFVI.
Final Fantasy IV - Kain, Tellah, Palom and Porom, Cecil, Edge
Final Fantasy VI - Shadow(Badass), Locke, Terra, Edgar, Cyan, Setzer, Gau, Sabin, Mog, Kefka
Final Fantasy VII- Cloud, Barrett, Tifa, Yuffie, Cid, Caith Sith, Red XIII, Vincent
Final Fantasy IX -Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Freya, Garnet
Final Fantasy X - Auron, Wakka, Lulu (hottest FF Babe), Rikku
Final Fantasy XII- Balthier (Coolest FF character), Fran (2nd hottest FF babe), Vaan, Basch, Penelo, Ashe
