There were only four Final Fantasy titles released on the PS2, one of which was a spin-off, and another an MMO.
At any rate, I'd start with Final Fantasy X and then follow that up with XII. X-2 was alright, but its feminine approach ticked off quite a few gamers, and Final Fantasy XI (an MMO) takes more hours than you could imagine to get up-to-speed to its current line of content, ignoring the fact the PS2 version of the game runs/looks the worst.
There's also the whole onslaught of FF titles released on the PSX which you could play on your PS2 via its backwards compatibility, and that essentially covers the entire Final Fantasy spectrum minus III.
don't listen to any of these guys, first, buy the ps1 anthologies for the old games, by this i mean FF4, and FF6, after that, find FF7 & 8, don't worry about 9, and then go to ten, and maybe X-2. then 12, thats the best way to get in all the Good FF games. trust me. if you really want to play it get 9 as well, im serious the classic FF games are un missable, and it would be a shame to start at X before fully appreciating how it got to where it is.
FF6 & 7 are an absolute must. your ps2 will play all of these games, but you'll need a ps1 memory card, but you'd be able to pick that up where ever you go to get these old games anyway.

I love FF9! I beat the last boss Necrone, but at the end of the battle, the game frooze. I was so mad! I never played it again. But it still is a good game. I wouldn't mind picking it up again. And what do you mean don't listen to any of these guys!?
