VERY tough call. Those two games are the best of the N64/Saturn/PS era, imo. If you asked me three years ago, I would've said FF7. Nowadays, I find that OoT really does have a bit more appeal.

I remember back in the beginning of 1997, when the Playstation and N64 fanboys would go at it, these were the two upcominggames that were thrown back and forth at each when people would discuss which system you should buy. God if you think conversations in System Wars are ridiculous now, you should have seen people go at it when these were the topics of discussion.

Anyway, back in the day I was always on the FF VII side of things until I finally got Zelda. OoT was one of the last games that made my jaw drop, as as great as FF VII is, it just isn't quite as good. And today, I still think it holds up better.

Z:OoT. I have read GameSpot's Wikipedia article and it was one of the top 4 games. It had a perfect 10.

FFVII

I think FFVII holds up much better than Zelda because FFVII uses classic RPG battle system that never gets old and the story is one of the best I've seen in gaming industry.

Zelda on the other hand.... how much difference is there with current 3D zeldas out there?

Honestly back then system wars didn't matter to me. i had both system so (it was easier to afford both of them back in the day) but i notice alot of you said Zelda, which no answer can be right or wrong, as amazing as zelda was, i think Final Fantasy VII for me, it was the storyline, it had a moremature storyline. not to say Zelda story line was anywhere near bad. That was amazing too. Anyone think they should remake Final Fantasy VII????

I'd love to see remake of FFVII.

Especially comparing to terrible sequels of movies and games they made relating to FFVII.

I'd actually use that same arguement against you. FFVII uses the same turn based combat that's been used in dozens of other RPG before and after it. Some might call it classic, but I'd call it very old and tired. Zelda on the otherhand may use the same system that have been used by other Zelda games, but there have only been 3 of them in a decade.

RPG gameplay doesn't really make much difference because that's not the main point of RPGs. It's the story.

Also ATB battle system might be old, but materia system is very unique and that hasn't been used since FFVII (i have no idea why because it's best magic system other than job system in the series)

Zelda on the other hand had bunch of games copied the same gameplay mechanics to the point it is no longer unique and it doesn't excel anymore. Also with over used character design and story setting, the game feels very stale.

While OoT had charm, I was old enough to enjoy LttP when it was released on the SNES. LttP is what I consider to be the BEST Zelda title to date and if it were to be remade today, I'm sure it would rank up there with the best of the best. With that said, FF7 took console RPGs to the next level and basically paved the way for contemporary JPRGs for years to come. Its my personal favorite (FF9 follows closely) and it brings back so many fond memories of my young teen years whenever I hear a song, reference, or even see a clip from this particular title.

I was hyped for OoT, but was ultimately left wanting more LttP.

Neither game is anywhere near the peak of thier series. FFVII being a buggy, ugly experience that doesnt hold up near as well as FFV or FFVI let alone newer ones like IX and XII which seemed to be finally getting the series back on a better path.

Ocarina of time certainly has held up a lot more than FFVII (which is hard to play without the game crashing on you especially if you go anywhere near the golden saucer) Its graphics and gameplay are still functional and good with the exception of a lot of horrible timed fetch quests and poor camera. The camera is really annoying during boss battles as the lock on system is not very effective and half of the time you are facing the walls when the boss monster is in the center of the room.

Zelda games that are better than Ocarina include: link to the past, twilight princess, minish cap and wind waker.

Of the two titles in the first post Id have to go with the Zelda.

I never had bug problems with FFVII so I don't know what you played.

Maybe you bought used and it was scratched up?

compared to that, FFVI was full of bugs, although some of them were positive bugs. Thanks to that bug I managed to get 99 items of everything.

FF series wasn't strong until 7 came out. After 7th game it finally managed to surpass Dragon Quest series in almost everyway.

I bought the version released by Eidos for the pc back in 1998 new. Ive tried to play thru the game multiple times but I have had the game mess up constantly. In fact a fatal game crash in the final dungeon prevented me from ever fighting sephiroth. It crashed constantly as I mentioned in the golden saucer and the snow boarding segment also. There was also a part in which you had to climb a ladder to procede and the character wouldnt grab the ladder. All of the FMVs are grainy and the music is a very obnoxious midi-ized version.

There are so many technical issues that even the good things about the characters and story are overshadowed. ( I do like Barret who is one of my favorite characters square has made, and I like the shinra corps leaders and the turks as well )

Some of that might have been solved if I had bought the PS version in the first place, but once I have bought a game Im not very likely to buy a new copy just to see if I got a bad localization /port.

Well that's why PC version recieved low scores.

we are talking about PS1 version.

Zelda OoT by far. I have beaten that game atleast 60 times and tried to challenge myself with beating it with 3 hearts and without dying. For FFVII I have played it beaten it once...

OOT.

It was the first N64 game I ever played, and its the best game I have ever played.

Im just not a final fantasy fan. I played 1,2,3,5,7, and I thought they were alright, they just bored me.

Neither. I find both to be boring and quite overrated.

I'd much prefer to play A Link to the Past or Chrono Trigger.
