Pretty great game. I remember a sneak peak at it back when it first released, and always wanted to give it a full play through.

The characters and ambiance are top notch, and the story is good fun.

My main complaint is a number of "puzzles" don't follow any logic and are simply random trial and error, made worse by limited environmental detail impairing your ability to identify things you can actually "trial and error" on. But really a great and enjoyable game. I'd say 8/10, marred only by some puzzles relying on belligerence instead of intelligence

I was really excited for Grim Fandango, as I like those old point and click games, especially when rebuilt. However thought it was a bit lazy, could have done with the models redone instead of spit-shined.

The blocky 3D models don't look very nice. I'd have liked it more if outdated polygon models didn't keep giving me a cringe face of "this is a 2015 release". I have no issue with retro, but in all respect it damages the intended artstyle. Monkey island and many of others did some quality adjustments. & Grim Fandango needed it just as much.

I tried it. The story was interesting. But I got stuck quick and I never got stuck almost in the new King Quest so I though it was a bad illogical point and click like a lot are or was.

I kinda stopped playing after year 2 or whenever the part is when you start off on the boat. I gotta get back into it and finish it.

But you are right. The games puzzles are not good. Just trial and error. Too many adventure games back then were like that. The voice acting, music and plot is better than the rest of the game. I remembered basically nothing on how to finish puzzles, thats how illogical they are. Day of the Tentacle was much easier and made more sense, and i dont remember ever having to look up hints for it.

I originally played this game on a pentium 133mhz with a 3dfx banshee graphics card. It actually was a fairly demanding adventure game in 1998 for the cpu and gpu. I always remember getting slight stuttering in the starting place when you leave the building to the undead festival.

I still have my original boxed copy from 1998, so I might not have the freshest view of the game, but...were the puzzles really illogical trial and error-y?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any that are completely out of the blue. Most are hinted at through dialogue and cutscenes.

I've played the original Grim Fandango with terrible controls and all. Has the remaster fixed these issues? Worth the replay?

I think when you compare to something like Myst and Riven you see that those have puzzles that typically require methodical experimentation that leads to logical solution. "OK, this needs to happen. This does this, that does that, if I do this and that then..." Here... some puzzles work like that, and many are more "lighthearted", which is a fun change of pace, but I think a disappointing number of puzzles were both simplistic and random.

The controls are interesting - you can do old tank or newer "continuous" control. I played on ps4 with the new interface and think it was generally a big improvement. There WERE times where it was clear the location was built around the tank interface and the free form controls couldn't quite mask/improve on that.

I think the storytelling and characters make it worth it. It's fun, and put many real smiles on my face... too few games do this as well, IMO. But the puzzles did sometimes disappoint

There were quite a few point and click games I seem to recall from the early LucasArts days that had these sorts of random combination puzzles. Whilst GF isn't the worse example of this they were still a bit irritating. Glad you enjoyed it though, I thought the remaster was really well done.
