The GS review of Radiant Dawn was one of the worst I've ever read here.
The game is on the exact same level as Path Of Radiance, which just a few years ago Gamespot deemed worthy of nearly a 9 out of 10. Yet RD is somehow mediocre and gets 30 points less? Right...
The game is classic Fire Emblem, which means its one of the best strategy games out there. Pretty much every other notable publication said so. If you like FE, its just more greatness. Basically a more refined version of Path Of Radiance.
look, i think FE:RD is a game with a lot going for it, but the problem is, i am a bit of a glutton for difficulty. as a newbie to the series, i was shocked at how unforgiving it is. i cannot remember another game i have played since maybe the NES era that punishes you so harshly (and right from the first battle i might add) for minor minor mistakes.
the game is flat out unwelcoming. i can see a lot of good aspects of the game but i can also see why anyone could rate it poorly.
Look, if you're a Fire Emblem fan, you'll probably enjoy the game.
However, the game is very difficult, and if you have to review a really hard game, that could leave a very negative impression on you.
And I think Lark just prefers Nippon Ichi's SRPGs more. There's nothing wrong with that; it's just a difference in opinions.
[QUOTE="Aquachild"]...because Fire Emblem sucks and it's too damn hard.

too damn hard?? difficult games are hard to come by. you call yourself a gamer and complain about difficulty. i'm interested in knowing what games you play
I don't like difficult games. But I do call myself a gamer. Not because I think it's any sort of badge of honour (it really isn't), but simply due to the fact that I play a lot of games.
I loved the original Fire Emblem on the GBA. Both the gameplay and writing were great. However, if this new Fire Emblem really is a difficult game, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to tolerate it for long.

Did you play Path of Radiance? Its like that, butyou can save during missions now. Personally, I found a game like DMC3 a ton more infuriating than this game, at least in the original release. I'm not seeing anything that makes this FE different from the others other than the fact that the GBA games are harder IMO.

i LIKE difficult games, but RD is too much. there is a difference in being difficult, and punishing new players of the game, and absurd penalties for tiny mistakes right from the beginning of the game.
This is one of the very few Gamespot reviews that I not only personally disagree with, but I also think it's just plain wrong.
Why does this particular review push my buttons? Well. I come to Gamespot for advise on wether to buy a game or not, and I trust them to steer me in the right direction. Yeah, there's some scores I disagree with, for example I think Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess were too low here. But you know what? They still gave those games high scores and still reccomended them, so it's no big deal. Hell even if I think a game deserves a 9.5 and it received a 7.5 here, it remains that Gamespot's score/reviewstill recommends the game, so it's not a problem.
Now here's Fire Emblem. The review pretty much told me "don't buy this game". Luckily, I did some further research and decided to get the game despite my trusted source's advise. Well surprise surprise, the game is great. Sure there's some problems, and it doesn't push the series forward, but there's nothing about this game that makes it go from excellent (Path of Radiance) to "Don't bother" (Radiant Dawn, apparently).
I'm only about 5 hours in so far, but the game still has the great and highly addictive gameplay that the series is known for. I'd easily recommend it to any Wii owner looking for a RPG or a strategy game.
Just a few commentsand personal thoughtson the main complaints about the games..
Difficulty: Honestly, I don't see the problem. Maybe it's just the way I play the game, or maybe its becauseI am not that far in (although apparently the beginning starts off challenging), but Idon'tfeel a rampup indifficulty from the last game. Iplay the same way: withcaution. Yeahit sucks to have to restart a mission because of one mistake, but every move can be calculated and really you just need to pay attention to what you're doing. Ifind games like Ninja Gaiden are much more frustratingwith its difficultylevel than Fire Emblem.
Story: Not much I can say for this.Sofar the story hasn't really picked up much yet, but it's certainly no where close to being "laughable" by any means. Until the story picks up more(which I've been told it does), I'm enjoying encountering some of the old characters from the previous game and really the addictive gameplay would be enoughto carry me through the game anyhow.
This is probably the first time I've been so outspoken about a review. I don't mind scores I disagree with, but when a review is so far off that it makes me second guess getting a game I would in the end really like, it makes me feel a bit shaky in the trust I put in Gamespot.
That might have been a tad too melodramatic. My apologies.
You know where there is no justice? The Front Mission review. There ISN'T one. I'm calling on GS to put one up soon, it was my favorite DS game of last year. Yes, it's a remake.
And for all those who think I'm radically off topic, Front Mission is a lot like FE, only harder, and with more customization. A LOT more. So, I guess my point is, if you're an FE fan, go get Front Mission.
And GS, show the game some respect, let the people know about it.
