In before the haters :P.
Looks great.
Edit: Look at the mountain in the background . If I remember correctly bungie confirmed they could render huge maps with the engine already back at E3 2006? Of course I doubt you'll be able to actually reach the mountain but it looks almost prerendered :o.
You mean in-engine, unless Halo 3 is a third person game where you look at your own face. Niiice lighting. gaminggeek
I suppose so. Although Bungie did say, "We're saying nothing about what's going on in the above image other than it is a screenshot taken in-game from Halo 3. "

You know, the pic reminds me of the planet Reach. Perhaps the Chief is experiencing a flash-back of sorts? O_o
Like Trifecta I'm all too aware of the Halo 2 screens that floated around at the time. That game also used game engine graphics for the cutscenes, yet the cutscenes had notably better visuals than the game, because of the very nature of cutscenes.
Looking at the halo 3 beta pics, then looking at this pic..... remembering Halo 2 ..... ehhhhh. Just can't bring myself to believe it till I see a video (remembers Halo 2 video of level that wasn't in the actual game) errr, video on my TV as I'm playing it on my 360. It's a sure buy, either way.

Yea the beta pics looked nothing like the one above. If you're expecting something up to that level your:
1. Being silly
2. Setting yourself up for dissapointment.
Well, I think the Halo 3 graphics debate is officially over. :)Dutch_Mix
In-Engine.....quite possibly...."in-game", that I doubt, I'll believe it when I see a video of the game actually being played with visuals like that.
The "debate" won't be over until Halo 3 is in consumers hands and the game actually looks like that during play and I doubt anything is "in-game" until I see a video in first-person perspective with hud with the game actually being played.....After what Bungie has tried to pass of with Halo 2 (and Halo 3) at E3 in the past as being "in-game" or "representative of gameplay" in addition to what Sony pulled with the Killzone E3 video, until I see someone actually playing the game with visuals up to par with what a company is claiming I'm not gonna buy into the hype.
After all, before Halo 2 launched and when people were claiming that would be "gauranteed" GOTY here at Gamespot, this is what people were claiming was "in-game" for Halo 2....the final product didn't look as detailed nor as crisp.
Also, everytime it's been predicted a Halo game will be GOTY here at gamespot by it's rabid fanboase, that prediction has failed to come true....in fact, anytime a game has been predicted to be GOTY based on screenshots it's failed to come true.
Graphics of the Year ?
TheMierArmy
Even IF...and that's a big if...the in-game visuals actually look that good.....games like Crysis for PC and Uncharted for PS3 both give it heavy competition, especially Crysis, and both Crysis and Uncharted have actually been demonstrated fully playable, as in a guy actually playing the game. Hell, even Bioshock would be a major contendor given it's art design and especially its water effects, not to mention Unreal Tournament 3.

Well, I can't imagine Bungie pulling the same stunt they did with that Halo 2 video. And if I recall correctly, they said in one of the recent updates that they're pretty much done with the actual game. This time around, they won't rushing to get Halo 3 out on store shelves. :)

And you're forgetting that Halo won numerous GOTY awards.

Dutch_Mix
Even if you want to count that, its one example out of the entire history of Gamespot....in fact, look at a majority of the games that actually won GOTY here at Gamespot (and other places) over the last 5 years and they are almost all different from what people were predicting would be gauranteed GOTY based on screenshots or hype.
Halo didn't win GOTY here at Gamespot, GTA3 did, in fact, Halo didn't get second place...I was talking about Gamespot, and since this is a Gamespot forum I would assume when you claimed "GOTY" that is what you were claiming too. Halo may have won GOTY at quite a few places (like Teamxbox), but there were equally as many awards that went to other games, especially GTA3 for PS2.
As for Halo 2, that didn't even win shooter of the year here, in fact, Halo 2 was nominated by Gamespot for Biggest Disappointment in 2004.
Well even though I'm still waiting for some more definitive pictures and video that's a pretty damn good picture right there.
I believe that Bungie took all the criticisms on Halo 2 to heart and they have been quite deliberate in how Halo 3 has been unveiled to the public. I have alot of faith that when everything is revealed it will both be extremely impressive and nothing will be shown that won't be 100% representative in the final product.

Oh, of course, good call.
GotY? Riiiight. Screenshot isnt that impressive to me. I dont get how it will ''end halo 3 graphic debates''. Its still sub-par. Im not a Halo 3 hater, just dont think it looks that impressive graphically. Gameplay over graphics.

Most definitely a good thing :) Has bungie indicated whether this will be the final part of the trilogy type of thing? I can't remember.
Looks vastly improved to the underwhelming visuals from the multiplayer beta. I'll be plenty happy if the game looks like that during play.
Oh, and the Chief's rifle has the three red lights of death. I LOL'd. Bungie just might want to consider changing that.

You act as if Halo not winning GOTY here somehow tarnishes its sales records/critical acclaim. In fact Halo won over 48 awards including GOTY from Gamespy, IGN, and EGM. So really, what are you trying to prove? That Halo is over-rated? Fine. But don't use the 2003 Gamespot GOTY award as the sole crutch for your argument. ;)

Yeah, Bungie said this would be the final Halo game. However, I honestly can't imagine Bungie discontinuing the franchise. There's just too much money to be made.

LOL. I see jaggies.
Dutch_Mix, you are officially the biggest Halo fanatic in the universe and from now on out, you are forbidden to make any kind of GOTY prognosis! :P
Seriously though, Bungie is kind of getting on my nerves right about now. I always knew they were a bit self-centered and pretentious lot who think they're sooo clever, but come on. What's the big ****ing deal? Just show the game already.

Yeah I doubt that they won't revisit the franchise after they take a bit of a break from it. Ensemble is working on Halo Wars right now and I would imagine Bungie will help collaborate with them somewhat on the game. I'm quite interested in what they will work on during their break from Halo.

QFT "a bit self-centered"? The company has a collective messiah complex.

I completley agree that they are making this far too frustrating by whipping up hype over a single cutscene screenshot. But I can see why they're doing this, IMO they botched the Halo 2 hype campaign by having that E3 2003 demo which showed the single player. Not only did that level, but also a lot of gameplay features within it, were axed from the final version of Halo 2...that video was the main single player "showpiece" for what Halo 2 would be like, aside from some screenshots they didn't show much else media about Halo 2's singleplayer.
For me that video was what set me up for the dissapointment of Halo 2's campaign, and I'm sure it was the same for other people, because that one video looked awesome. If I had to choose between that method to Bungie's current one of unnecessary super duper secrecy, I would choose the latter.
Not that it's even a good way to do things, but it's better than a potentially far worse way.
You act as if Halo not winning GOTY here somehow tarnishes its sales records/critical acclaim. In fact Halo won over 48 awards including GOTY from Gamespy, IGN, and EGM. Dutch_Mix
And again....there were plenty of other games that recieved GOTY awards at sites that nominate all platforms for an overall goty in the years both Halo games came out....especially here at Gamespot, you might not have realized but this is a Gamespot forum.
So to create a topic that claims that Halo 3 is guaranteed GOTY based solely on a screenshot is a bit foolish and fanboyish....especially at a site where either Halo has failed to be GOTY in the past....and especially when there have been cases of hyped screens and videos from both the MS camp (Halo 2) and Sony camp (Killzone PS3) which prooved to be false and not representative of the final product.
Are we really talking about the same company? If there's any special trait I'd describe Bungie with it's self-irony.inoperativeRS
They made a documentary about the Brutes using *gasp* Halo 2 footage. Bungie's idea of big news is revealing a new weapon, a new vehicle, and announcing that *double gasp* granades will bounce off hard surfaces and dead bodies will float on water. Their first Halo 3 single-player screenshot released less than 3 months before the game's release depicts...Master Chief holding a rifle.
Well with e3 next week... I don't know what they could be thinking not showing the game... today...toment
Why release anything then?
Not that it's even a good way to do things, but it's better than a potentially far worse way.nuttybar
Yeah, they're going from one extreme (showing off a level that's not even guaranteed to be in the final game) to another (not showing anything at all). Someone needs to go up there and teach those guys balance. :P

Zelda Wii is GOTY *insert year here* !!! Woo!
I love pre game hype, its fun and I hope most people dont take to serious and just enjoy it. If you love Halo as much as I love the Zelda games then I know the fun you are having right now waiting for this game. I hope everyone has a game series, it could be more than one that you love, that just makes you excited to play it, its a great feeling.
Totally, man. I'm having more fun than ever just anticipating the game. :) I know there's no such thing as a GOTY lock, but man, Halo 3 is going to totally freaking own even if it doesn't win GOTY. :D

Yeah I tried that once, and then it turned around and bit me in the rear. Now I'm just going to stick with cynical and pessimistic, thank you very much. :P
Holy smoke! It appears that the screenshot is in fact in-game!
Check out what Frankie said on NEOGAF, "It's not a cutscene, it's a carefuly posed screenshot from Campaign. You can carefully pose and take your own screenshots in Campaign, in the game, in Sept 25th. You can recreate this pose exactly"
Someone hold me.
