Welcome to Gamespot!
If you really enjoyed the oldschool FPS such as the ones you mentioned, I would recommend Counter Strike as a good fundamental shooter that sticks to fps roots(it is primarily online multiplayer however so without a decent connection you might want to put it off). In terms of single player games I would recommend S.T.A.L.K.E.R which again stays true to the genre's roots and throws in a little bit of horror- zombies and creepy dungeon crawling any one?
Of course if you wanted to get into modern FPS- you know the ones where you kill hordes of enemies one after another, have unlimited ammo and regenerating health? Well you couldn't go wrong with any of the Call of Duty series.
Hope I helped
Ok, all you young gamers. I'm an old fart, but still trying to participate in this fascinating(new for me) world of computer games. My limited experience and preferences are these: I started with DukeNukem, (I think), and went on to Doom, to Doom 3(which I really enjoyed), then on to Quake(I'm now in Quake 4, and love it). With these games in mind, where should I go from here? I really appreciate any input from you young guys and gals, who are probably laughing at my behind the times position. Help an old guy out here......give me some recommendations in keeping with the above mentioned style of games.....I don't want to spend money on stuff I won't enjoy playing.....Thank you.............Old Retired Guy......jegreen4
Since you like Doom, and Quake you could always try Dead Space and Dead Space 2 comes the 25th of Jan.but it is a third person shooter. You could try F.E.A.R., then go to F.E.A.R. 2, then on to F.E.A.R. 3 in March, those are first person shooters. Theres always Call of Duty Black Ops, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, or Battlefield Bad Company 2. Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Crysis, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat, Counter-Strike Source, Borderlands. If I think of more I'll update this list.
Those are all pretty decent games that I'd give a try.
You're never to old to game so keep it up man and game on ;)
F.E.A.R. is a must. It's an old school FPS, but throws in top notch gun fights and an awful lot of bloodiness. It's from the same developers of Blood, if that tells you anything. Half-Life 2 is a good, easy-to-get-into FPS that is an excellent introduction to current-gen FPS. If your computer can handle it, Metro 2033 might also be a good idea, as it's a pretty straightforward shooter with excellent presentation and visuals. Call of Duty is pretty alright, especially 4, but if you don't want to bother with multiplayer, be sure not to spend too much money on it. The single player campaigns of these games are over before you know it. If you'd like to try sandbox FPS, then the games you'll want to look into most are S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Crysis, although it must be said those games are a pretty big leap from classics such as Duke3D and Doom, so you might wanna try other games first.
Hope that helps, happy gaming. :)
Thanks for the reply. Just bought a new machine, pretty much top of the line for gaming, I believe. It's a PC Windows 7, i3 processor, 1TBHDD, DDR3, HDMI, etc. I think I can play just about any game that's out there right now........so, where do I go from here??jegreen4
Hmm, if it only has an i3 it's probably not quite going to be a top of the line machine. i3 is Intel's current entry-level processor, so it might not be as capable as you think.
It mainly depends on the graphics card though. What graphics card does it have?
Nothing like deflating the guy, although it is not top of the line, it is a respectable processor. with alot of memory and good video card he should do quite well. Especially since he will probably stick to some older games. I just bought a Acer laptop with a 2GHz Pentium Dual Core (nothing special at all), I upgraded the memory to 8GB. I did not buy it to play games but thought I would give it a try, it only has intel graphics. I tweeked WIndows 7 and maxed the video card settings and all the game settings and it plays without a hicup! I dl COD 4 and it plays it perfectly to my suprise. I am 42 and been playing since the early systems, when Quake came out I was hooked. Then all the 1st person shooters that came out after it, I was always upgrading my machines and video cards. I remember my first 3d card, a Canopus3D 4MB video card. It was the best at the time for Quake/OpenGL. So, just give some guys a break around here. You don't need the best to run some of these games from a few years ago.bru87tr
Deflate? Who's trying to deflate?
Yes, it's a decent enough processor, and in itself will handle games with pretty much no problem. But it is entry-level, and so presuming he bought it prebuilt, it's the kind of processor you expect to find coupled with a suitably entry-level GPU. In which case, the system as a whole is hardly suitable for playing the vast majority of games made over the last 5 or 6 years.
That's why I asked him what his GPU is. Because without that, recommending games for him to try is difficult.
With FPS & single player, I'd suggest the following:
Far Cry (1st one as far cry 2 is ok, but 1st was muchbetter in my view)
The Half Life Series, even though the 1st is quite dated its still an amazing game. I would suggest also looking at the blackmesasource website (Half life remake)
As mentioned prior, Crysis & Fear are both worth getting. However personally i felt the FEAR series died at no.2, Dead Space is really good, ret it.
Return to Castle Wolfenstien (if you like quake/doom you'll like this), also Prey was damn good.
Mass Effect 1 & 2: not strictly FPS but amazing & both are a must play!
Mafia: one of the best story driven games ever
Brothers An Arms series (latest one is really good)
If you want a challenge where you just cannot run around shooting hordes of enemies, try Ghost Recon with Desert Siege and Island Thunder. It can be had pretty cheaply on Steam. Oh, and I am not that young either.
Those are the games which I started out on so you should like these:
Return To Castle Wolfenstein*
F.E.A.R*
Bioshock
Singularity*
Half Life/Half Life 2*
Crysis/Crysis Warhead*
Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2*
Halo (theyre all the same in their essence, so any will do)
Call of Duty (COD4 is the pinnacle)
These are the more traditional shooters these are the ones you will ease into the most.
If youre feeling more adventurous.
Borderlands*
STALKER SoC
Fallout 3
Metro 2033
Mirrors Edge
These shake things up a bit more, do some research before you get them. But theyre all great games.
The ones with the * are my personal favourites.
If you like old-school first person shooters try PAINKILLER. You'll find it for cheap < $10 and from the specs you gave you'll have no problem running it.
Another first person shooter that gets little attention is Star Wars: Republic Commando from 2005 which you can also find for < $10.
If you're still not sure what to try next, just go with Halo
Painkiller is an awesome game and series.
Star Wars: Republic Commando is a great game as well, adding a bit of team control.
