Some background: I have a friend who constantly asks me if I've bought BF3 yet. Before release I was quite excited for it. It looked amazing. But then I played the beta (on PC) and have since played it on both the 360 and PS3. My problem is this (and why I need the flame shield):

It just feels like Call of Duty to me.

Now hear me out! I am talking about the INFANTRY combat - mostly in confined (to medium) spaces. It felt the same to me in Bad Company 2, where the mechanics were just really arcadey and on par with Call of Duty. Essentially what I am talking about is running around like Rambo with an SMG being just as effective (if not more) than suppresive fire with a LMG/SAW (such as the M249). I just don't see the tactics. I don't see people moving "slowly" or checking around corners or covering flanks or laying down suppressing fire. I just see people running around looking for instant action which renders all the great points about the game to a puddle of arcadey crap.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of elements I love - the size and scale, the audio and general fidelity: amazing! But then the core gameplay, the infantry mechanics, I feel like I am playing Call of Duty and there's no substance to it. I know A LOT (probably all of you) will disagree with me but I can't shake this feeling and it's pretty much just stopping me from getting my own copy of BF3. (This doesn't include all the DLC nonsense which seems to be even worse than CoD) I would love to get into BF3 but I just ... can't. Am I playing it wrong or something?

Anyone out there who understands where I'm coming from? *hides under shield*

Perhaps you should explain what you think of when you think of Call of Duty. To me I think of people rushing around without using tactics, taking the Rambo approach to gunplay. It seems to be an incredibly effective tactic in BF3. In otherwords, BF3 is incredibly fast paced, far more than it should be.

Look at this video. People are running around like rats. That doesn't even include the 50 videos I could show you of people runing around with SMG's or magnums and the fact that no one in any of the videos shows any sign of tactics or anything.

Yes it is fast paced. So is BFBC2. It keeps you in the action more than 2142 and BF2 did, but it still has the massive area with the tactics. You have to know the point of attack and talk to your squad. THink about when to hold back, rush in, split up and so on. You talk about where the enemies are. YOu res eachother like mad. You have tactics of knowing which point to go to next and how to approach them. CoD is a run around killing eachother fest. If BF3 was all about that, my brother wouldn't rank up in the top 2 with me, cause he doesn't kill as much as I do.

It is situational. You use camo, cover, and discretion.

PS - THEY ARE PLAYING DEATHMATCH IN THIS VIDEO!

Watch the video. Even that is a mild example of what I mean. It's all death match stuff. There's nothing in there you wouldn't find in Call of Duty.

Just saw your edit...

It makes it even worse that I couldn't tell it was death match because that's how people play it normally.

You gotta realise I am not talking about gamemodes but the way the infantry combat itself plays out. People ALWAYS run around like rambo and use sniper rifles as shotguns REGARDLESS of game modes. That's been my experience across three platforms.

Edit: Just to reiterate my issue is that in CQ it looks and feels the same as any Call of Duty game, making the maps bigger MIGHT change that factor a bit, but essentially it's the way it's hardcoded into the game and playing it the same way CoD is played is EXTREMELY effective. Across 3 platforms in a variety of game modes, I hardly see how that's got anything to do with me.

It is rambo to a degree, but not without tactics and you have to know when to turn the other way. I use a G3A3 and I rack up the kills.

The people who want to work as a team will work as a team. The other people want to be Rambo. I prefer to play with a premade team of friends that I can talk with on Skype/TeamSpeak/Mumble, that way we can actually talk about what we want to do next. If I'm playing alone I'll try to find some people to stick with, but occasionally I'll go off on my own.

I think the Rambo technique is effective because that's how everyone else plays, so you're on the same playing field ideally. Although honestly, when you play with a team and it's quite obvious everyone else is "CoDing" it, you're just going to win.

When me and my friends play as a team and use the mechanics implemented in the game, such as the Recon tools, resupplying, healing, and laying down suppressing fire, the only time we run into trouble is when we run into a team doing the same thing. Most matches, I understand what you're saying. But there are those grand lobbies that have everyone working as a team and playing the game competively to the point where they're using the mechanics properly and it has offered some of the best MP I've played this gen.

Yep. Me and my 2 to 3 buddies talk over skype and that is absolutely vital. Communicating your position, enemy positions, if you are down, what you are doing, where you are going. All these things are very important if you wanna do really well.

I have no problem if the other team is all Rambo, just means my team will win.

I mix it up sometimes, solo or team play. when i do solo it, i'm not just run n gun, i move around and lay fire and mark targets with my LMG. Oh god, how i love that quick burst on a moving target and he drops. Either way, im helping my team and not diying every 30 second running into a contested zone, guns blazing.

I do catch grief for using tanks and whatnot, when i set up a good position and am stationary then some rambo wants to use it and die in 10 seconds.

You just need to find the right servers.

I'm a BIG BF3 player and love the game but I can see where people see the comparison. The infantry combat has been made tighter and more confined in some BF3 scenarios and in that sense it IS like CoD. But the similarities kinda stop there. The gunplay in BF3 is superb and some of the best I've seen in any game. It just feels so good and satisfying.

Also the lack of killstreaks or rewards like that in BF3 totally stops it from being like CoD.That and the perks attached to your character don't really have such drastic effects in BF3. It's just stuff like a small bit faster sprinting or an extra grenade. Not stuff like radar invisibility etc.

Best thing is BF3 caters for both types of gameplay. You can go big and open or small and confined. SOmetimes im in the mood for some CoD type gameplay and getting kill after kill. Other times I love vehicles and long distance sniping

Stop playing TDM.

Start playing Conquest.

IMO there is nothing similar between the two games. One of them (BF) you have to think and the other one (CoD) you do not. Watch a good team play BF and you will know what I mean. Its amazing to see the difference.
