Some background: I have a friend who constantly asks me if I've bought BF3 yet. Before release I was quite excited for it. It looked amazing. But then I played the beta (on PC) and have since played it on both the 360 and PS3. My problem is this (and why I need the flame shield):
It just feels like Call of Duty to me.
Now hear me out! I am talking about the INFANTRY combat - mostly in confined (to medium) spaces. It felt the same to me in Bad Company 2, where the mechanics were just really arcadey and on par with Call of Duty. Essentially what I am talking about is running around like Rambo with an SMG being just as effective (if not more) than suppresive fire with a LMG/SAW (such as the M249). I just don't see the tactics. I don't see people moving "slowly" or checking around corners or covering flanks or laying down suppressing fire. I just see people running around looking for instant action which renders all the great points about the game to a puddle of arcadey crap.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of elements I love - the size and scale, the audio and general fidelity: amazing! But then the core gameplay, the infantry mechanics, I feel like I am playing Call of Duty and there's no substance to it. I know A LOT (probably all of you) will disagree with me but I can't shake this feeling and it's pretty much just stopping me from getting my own copy of BF3. (This doesn't include all the DLC nonsense which seems to be even worse than CoD) I would love to get into BF3 but I just ... can't. Am I playing it wrong or something?
Anyone out there who understands where I'm coming from? *hides under shield*
