After 20 years is resident evil 2 remake the game you always wanted or were there things you hoped were done differently?

For me, it met my expectations with flying colors. The game was amazing and it definitely passes. The only issue I have with it is story related to point A to point B scenarios flowed better and made more sense. The gameplay is top notch though. I barely paid the game any mind though prior to release but seeing everyone talk about it on social media & on Gamespot/Forums motivated me to buy it, and after unlocking everything and clearing all the records I got to say I wholeheartedly enjoyed my time with this.

So gamers, did you played RE2 Remake and if so, did it meet your expectations?

(Just in case of no one hasn't played this game yet, I'll cover the rest in Spoilers and not necessary to read below but more pointers to mention and again, this is optional to read below)

Mr. X-a lot more interesting than he was in the original. He's super-thrilling to deal with more often than not.

Chief Irons-character is pretty fucked up and less interesting than the original where he was a psychopath trying to blend in with the chaos. I thought it would have been way more interesting and faithful to the source material to make his deceptive nature more nuanced, but in the end he just ends up being a giant creep who is doing obvious evil shit from the second you see him and I got to admit, I like the way he continues to cursing Sherry lol.

Anette-is also written strangely in Claire's scenario. It's ironic because in the original game Leon's scenario has her seeming a lot more cold and sinister and Claire's makes her more sympathetic, but in this game she might as well be a hero in Leon's game and in Claire's she's an entirely different character with some really obnoxious dialogue that comes off as annoying and unsympathetic for the vast majority of it. They really failed letting you see both sides of her.

@davillain-: I thought it was great. Pretty much everything I would have expected from a really competent remake. It hit a lot of the notes and kept a fair amount of nostalgia from the original. The new engine is pretty solid, with great graphics. The zombie design is really effective, as well as the lighting techniques. There is a pretty significant amount of attention to detail in this game. The environments are incredibly detailed, which is something I love in games (particularly survival horror) because it's a huge factor in the immersion for me. Hell, if you look at the character models there are a -ton- of different models just for the standard zombie. They put a lot more time and effort into this game than I thought they would and it paid off. I think they absolutely nailed what they set out to do.

That said, do I love it? It's a really, really good game but it's not necessarily as strictly impressive as RE7 was because it's going out of its way to not necessarily do something new. It's a fresh take on an old game, and it's a really well done fresh take. But it's also very much a nostalgia game. It brings back several anachronisms in modern games like fixed save points (typewriters), limited inventory space, obtuse/nonsensical adventure game puzzles, etc. I love it for how much of that detail it retained, while also refined some of the harder to deal with points of that era like the fixed camera angles, ink ribbons, and it quickly allows you to expand your inventory. Still, it's hard to judge it by modern game standards because it's a faithful remake/re-envisioning of a very non-modern game. But for what it is, it's awesome.

Was already excited and far exceeded expectations. Think I've continuously mentioned the project since 2015, I'm a huge fan of Resident Evil and Survival Horror_

The first Resident Evil Remake was very faithful to the original and just enhanced on the horror, lore and threat level. Making it the definitive version of the original without question. Mentioned alot about this game last year it seemed some didn't recall how good a Remake it was, and why Remake 2 was under so much pressure.

Resident Evil 2 Remake feels more like it works along with the original Resi2, both have a reason to go back to. And yet, that worked out great.

While the new game had sections I find criticism- zombies are too RNG for my liking, knife is seriously OP on the P.C. version, lack of spiders, crows, giant moth, Brad, dire lickers , No context for how the Tyrant got in Raccoon City (didn't care for the lack of linking scenarios, or story changes) Remake2 is still the best Survival Horror game in a very long time. And I state that as a huge fan of The Evil Within 2.

They made Tyrant less a distraction and an actual threat. Birkin also came across to have more a reason to put himself through it all. Resident Evil 2 was always Birkins game, and why the G virus was a bigger threat than T-virus. That was always the central purpose of the plot.

Capcom have a struggle to make Nemesis of similar quality to this game.

Best overall character though, Marvin Branagh. Feel even worse now leaving him to get infected in Outbreak over and over. . .

Just in case of no one hasn't played this game yet

We've had a lot of Resident Evil 2 threads recently Dav, and spoiler heavy. I'm sure you're fine. Plenty have played it. The game has already sold millions. And well deserved. Glad you gave the game a fair chance though, seemed you was very sceptical on the game previously.

Now I just wait for Nemesis Remake-

I really liked it. However, Resident Evil 1 Remake is still king because it makes RE1 completely useless. It expands absolutely everything and makes everything better. The RE2 remake doesn't do everything better than the original.

Resident Evil 2 remake is dripping with atmosphere and it's fun to play but... the Original re2 still has merit in the puzzle solving and the A/B scenario blending. Also, I absolutely hate that zombie grabs are now basically cinematics where mashing the buttons/getting zombies off you isn't a mechanic anymore. It feels too basic and hollywoody. I like that defense items made a return, but there is just this lack of detail to the nuances of the combat. (EG there is only Green/yellow/danger status, while the REmake1 has yellow caution, red caution, etc). Also, the game is very linear (I hateeee the objective screen. Its so videogame-y) and there arent any quirky challenges like knife-only and other fun runs to do.

Also, RE2 really isn't better than RE1 to begin with- so my hype level was high, sure, but I already didn't like the original 2 as much as 1/4/7

I'd say it met all my expectations. RE2 was one of my favorite games of the PS1 gen and the remake is one of my favourite's of this gen. My only complaint is the scenario's should blend in better. There are certain scenarios where it just makes no sense if both characters are dealing with the same threats. I thought they should have gave the character's a little more unique path. Or even better have enemies you kill in scenario A not appear in B and change up the boss battles. But overall it was amazing and its the best RE to date.

I haven't played it yet but gameplay footage I've seen so far is really impressive. Instead of adding a new coat of paint to an old game or making a new game loosely based on an old one, it looks a proper remake that captures the spirit of the original while bringing it up to modern standards.

You have two versions of green actually in the new remake, you have dark and light green, dark green is full health. That's four variants. Hunters could also one-shot Jill and Chris in the original Remake with yellow caution, making the orange caution kind of pointless outside the easier difficulties.

where mashing the buttons/getting zombies off you isn't a mechanic anymore

You could bash buttons to get zombies off you quicker in the original, true. You still can with prompts as the player in Remake2 has items. Otherwise I think with the extra mobility has the idea to avoid the grab entirely. Which at times is easier said than done with the hitbox range. .

Oh also the RE2Remake soundtrack completely blows. It is not singable or catchy at all. Where is the damn save room theme

I think some of the new soundtrack is underrated by nostalgic fans who just bought and stuck with the OGST, while it has a lack of overall music (going for that Dark Souls less is more impact) some what's on offer is pretty great

The Super Tyrant track is very good

Replace 7 with Nemesis, and add Outbreak File1 and pretty much my thoughts exactly. I do love the original. Four also holds a special place.

Everyone has personal favorites though, I just never cared for Birkins or Irons motives as much as most. Would have liked more context with Hunk in the remake, a missed opportunity.

Nice to see everyone's enjoying it and if that wasn't enough, Capcom has just announced RE2 Remake has ship 4 million and continues to impress gamers.

@davillain-: Yeah I even noticed recently they had Rita Phillips name on one of the desk tags. So they could mix a lot of what happened in Outbreak into the 3 remake.

For those who don't know she's the police officer who survives thanks to Marven taking that iconic torso wound, before the events of Resi2. Which is all but canon now.

Oh yeah it definitely met my expectations and then some. Resident Evil 2 is pretty much tied with Resident Evil 4 as my favourite RE game. I was very hyped for the remake but was hoping that they would just recreate the original game but with a graphical upgrade, similar to what they did when remaking the first game. I was a bit worried when I found out exactly what they were doing with it however it turned out fantastically and I’m very glad that it did.

I'm a big fan of the franchise and thought that the original RE2 was the best of the bunch, so needless to say I had super high expectations for this one, and I'm happy to say that they were mostly all met. I absolutely love the atmosphere and the gameplay (so glad they ditched the first person from RE7), and only have a few critiques.

As you mentioned, the whole A/B scenarios were a little disappointing and frankly felt half-assed... along this same line, the story now also makes less sense than the original game: if X is no longer going after Sherry's pendant, then what the hell is doing? I feel like if they were going to basically do away with the A/B crossovers then they should've just made Leon's path be about Ada/Brikin and Claire's be about Sherry/X.

My only other gripe is much more minor and has to do with the zombie grab mechanics. At first I was against them incorporating the defensive items from RE1 remake, but quickly adjusted to it. This does of course slightly affect how you must play the game; you can't deliberately take as many bites in an effort to save ammo but even worse is how much you get slowed down due to the animation and often get the direction your character is facing changed. Couldn't they have at least included the headstomps?!?

These things aside, it really is a great game and I'm amazed at how I still find myself running through it again and again (still need an S+ on Claire hardcore, dammit). Hopefully we don't have to wait as long for a Nemesis remake as we did for this one! ;)

I made it to the underground area without killing a zombie. I have been running past every enemy and have managed to save a ridiculous amount of ammo.

Just wondering can I beat the game by killing zombies and have enough ammo throughout the whole game? Because I'm starting to get sick of running past zombie I want to shoot something, haha.

It exceeded them. It managed to successfully merge old and new,

Minor quibbles

- The original had more story-telling, particularly on text documents pick up

- The original had more of a difference between campaigns

- The opening city section is really disappointing compares to the original

- Some enemies (spiders) are missing/replaced

- The older designs of Birkin looks better imo

- Ada Wongs section is "meh".

- Crash Bandicoot section out of place

- I would rather the original OST was recomposed than totally replaced (yes I know it's dlc)

Other than that, superb. it uses the old school style of play (hardcore), while updating it. No more segmented rooms, a cohesive game world. No more running past Mr X and having the room reset, they fully realized what they were trying to do with MrX/Nemisis. A focus on exploration and resource management that rewards the player for thinking both immediate and far ahead in time. Just a tone of stuff, like how it tries to keep the idea of the player standing still to shoot t

The map is really intuitive as well, honestly, probably one of the best maps i've seen in a game. It gives you all the required information without being obnoxious or messing up exploration.

It manages to be cinematic while removing alot of stuff I hate

- The cutscenes never drag on too long

- No forced cinematic walking

- No QTE

- No "fake tension" scripted moments

- The right amount of cutscenes, no constant interruptions

- No pulling control away from the player constantly

Rant rant rant... awesome game. Looking forward to Nemesis.

I found this opinion on Remake 2 and the team behind it, sort of made me laugh how some 'fans' view the franchise

I recall someone on GD also stating 'fixed camera or get out'.

Like many, I started with the fixed camera angle games. Outbreak was my first, arguably one of the most challenging games in the entire franchise. First remake is also one of my favorites along with Nemesis.

And yet I think anyone who has actually followed the franchise before it gained a loss of identity, will agree Resi is more about item management and learning from mistakes. Trial and error. That's what feeds the tension. Resident Evil always focused more on questioning the Players choices than 'horror'. The survival aspect. Horror section was always semi-campy. Even in the Remake. And for those who state "Resi use to be scary" also need to consider that maybe because you've played so many Survival Horror games that shock and eerie vibe has diminished due to experience and mental growth.

Not against fixed camera angles, but it was used because of limitations. Not because it was set to define the series.
