In all FPS games, you control basically the head of the character so you get a view from his eyes.

But take a look at this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TFxibEJxhw

It's the infamous Atlanta Mall Cop. It took me a while to realize that he had the camera mounted on his chest.

Pretty gnarly stuff. But the perspective from the camera makes it better. You see his arms moving around, you see him tumbling with other people. Also...I'm kind of tired of looking video game characters in the eye. This perspective sort of gives you like a...Krane's eye view of the world. I guess it like lets you see the visceralness of combat while keeping you seperate from the main character. It's kind of uncanny.

Like, the videos are practically a GTA game, and really ought to be studied by all game designers. Shooting galleries are so dumb.

And how would you justify the character aiming down sights though his chest?

Funny anecdote, an Australian cop show called Rush had a shot of the character's aiming down their sights, but the shot implied that it was taken through a chest cam. I think I'm the only one who noticed how ridiculous it was.

You have no idea of the fights I get into with people when I point that sort of thing out. People just want to believe what they see on TV is real when most of the time it's fake.

Didn't think about that one...

Umm, I guess I"d have a crosshair, but no aiming down sights.

Something like the Doom movie FPS scene would be cool:

It's not First Person if it isn't the view the character sees.

A better idea: Developers should start making shooters in second-person perspective. Daring, I know.

There is a game on the horizon that will give gamers a better perspective. It will not be on consoles at first, if it is at all though.

God, I forgot how stupid that movie was. The "imps" look like power ranger rejects and the wheelchair "demon" is simply awful

FPS games do need a new perspective - by playing as the aliens/monsters/robots/ defending themselves against the humans :P

Do you think the world is ready for it, though? It might be too much.

Second person has been done before. Remember the first boss of Battletoads on NES? Too bad it's a flimsy concept and not really marketable.

There was also a boss in Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal where the view temporarily shifted to second-person. And I wouldn't worry about it not being marketable. All that would need to happen is for the next Call of Duty to be in second-person, and then every game will use that perspective. :P

O_O holy s***, i thought about that... just think of a game that, gets you attached to the alien kind, and being attacked by humans. and being all dramatic and emotional, but kick a$$ gunplay...
