I'm curious as to what gamers think of the use of iron sights in first person shooters. I don't like them, I prefer the style of Halo, Half Life 2, Resistance 1 compared to pretty much every single FPS being released now. What do you guys think of them and would you prefer most FPS games to stop using them or keep them?

They are very useful especially for guns that have low accuracy such as machine guns or sub-machine guns.

Depends on the gun and game... some have terrible iron sights, some have great. Example: IMO MW and MW2 RPD iron are fantastic... while M16 sucks penguin c$#^.

yes, left trigger iron sights and right trigger fire is how I like it, I don't like clicking right analog like they used in Halo or Killzone

Do you mean ADS? Aim Down the Sights? Yes, it is easier to aim that way and gets you into the game more. Shooting from the hip run moving around fast and then when you need to get a good shot in you bring that gun up to aim better. I prefer it in games

Depends on the game. I couldn't imagine Halo with IS, nor could I imagine CoD without IS. Although, I hate it when FPS games have that zooming in instead of IS.

If it's an non-realistic FPS (Quake, Unreal Tournament, Halo) it doesn't need them but if it's a semi-realistic or realistic FPS (CoD, MoH, Arma), then it does need them.

This... Sorry but iron sights and sprinting should be standard in all FPSs, soon to be followed by parkour moves. (climbing stuff)

Climbing obstacles is awesome. No more chest high walls obstructing my progress! **** you masonry and crude boxes, I'm free!

YES! Nothing worse than seeing a gun with a reflex sight and not being able to look through it (F.E.A.R.). I also dislike when games let you aim but only zoom in a little without letting you look through the sights (Call of Juarez BiB, Resistance 2...), I'm glad Resistance 3 will adopt more realistic aming.

I never care about immersive. If I want immersive then I'll go play Airsoft.

Not everygame need them. They take me out of the game and make the game a little less immersive.

I think iron sight is a must for all fps in general (well most anyways). Accuary shots and the fact that when you can't aim down its harder to take people at a distance

Agreed - but for me I think the style of the game is a factor as well. For instance, like one of the posters said above,F.E.A.R. could have used iron sights / ADS, but with a game like Halo, I think the lack of iron sights suitedthe gamejust fine.

Agreed. I don't miss sights too much in Halo, but there's just something crazy satisfying about looking down a shotgun's barrel while you blast a poor foe.

I like them alot in games that use real world hardware. It's a little disconcerting if you can see the iron sights on a gun but can't use them. That being said, fantastic or futuristic settings certainly don't need them.

I hate shooters that don't let you aim down the sights. Especially ones that try to be termed "realistic."

Call of Duty was pretty much my favourite shooter to play because all the guns had iron sights.

I do not see anything useful about them and there are better use for the second button.

Except for the fact that you can't see what your shooting at when your gun is at your hip, or you know... not in your face lined up with the target. FPS need Iron sights.

Are you talking about real life or game since they do not act the same and should not act the same?

Iron sights in Quake multiplayer would actually be an obstacle. Not every FPS needs them.

Not every FPS needs to be realistic. Play Serious Sam and you'll know what I mean.

I also find it funny how noone cared about iron sights before Call of Duty.

Why can't a game have it's weapons work like it's real life counterparts? The fact that many games have over the top weapons turns me off to most FPS games. I don't know about anyone else, but I would love a game to feature weapons that are not balanced or have over the top or worse, terrible performance. I crave a game where the bunny hoppers are targets and there are penalties for actions. The good thing is, there is a game like that in development.

If it's anything, iron sights being implemented in F:NV was a total improvement over Fallout 3's gunplay.

No way, I hate them and the gameplay style they bring with them. Gunplay is just completely weak IMO, I guess it's OK in single player, but the "sprint fast, stop for auto-aim/kill style gameplay is getting stale, especially in the typical one-on-one battles of multiplayerand brings practically no learning curve between weapons and tactics.
