I think some people are confusing "games that need to die" with "games I don't like". Just because you don't personally like a game does not make it a bad game. I'm very much enjoying the retro resurgence Mega Man is seeing, I liked Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow looks like it could finally give the series the 3D game it always deserved. As far as Final Fantasy goes, Square has been slipping the last few years. But after about 6 years I still play and enjoy Final Fantasy XI Online, and very much look forward to Final Fantasy XIV Online.
I don't like sports games. I have zero interest in playing or watching someone else play them for even a minute. But I certainly won't say "developers just need to stop making sports games cause they all need to die" because I don't like them.
The way I see it, games that "need to die" are franchises that used to be good (or even great) that just can't keep up with the times. Yet still keep churning out game after game and is just to the point where its embarrassing. IMO games such as:
Tony Hawk
Tomb Raider (Though Guardian of Light was actually a lot of fun)
Armored Core
Duke Nukem (Duke Nukem Forever just won't go away)
Silent Hill
Guitar Hero/Rock Band (for the love of all that is holy stop milking these two with pointless releases every 6 months)
Call of Duty (With all the talent at Infinity Ward gone Activision will drive this game into the ground)
And it really pains me to say that about Silent Hill. As I love the series and feel they are hands down the most frightening games ever made. But the series has struggled to find its place in the more modern entries into the genre. Such as Resident Evil 4/5, Dead Space, and Alan Wake.
