Gah this discussion has been an ongoing battle within my head so im just gonna put it out there :). Highly to me is 8.5 and up... maybe not for you tho. Has anyone noticed that the games that get awarded high scores are usually First person shooters? Umm... Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Fear on PC, etc... Its as if lately in the past few years theres been a steady increase in First Person Shooters - "Oh look that FPS shooter got rated highly and sold many copies, lets make one and get rich like they did" The dangers of this increase of First Person shooters is that we may get amateur developers with ambitious visions making amateur games. Dont get me wrong, I love my first person shooters as i know many others do too, but what happens when the majority types of games out there are mainly FPS'. Couple this with FPS' being the main types of games that get high ratings and you'll have nothing but shelfs made up of .. you guessed it FPS'.. lol... i don't really know why i wrote this up... but i guess it was to open up some ideas :S... hmmm anyways, yea. I dont know about you, but i certainly dont want a future full of FPS'. When I buy a game I always hit up several review sites to see what they think of the game and judge for myself from there, and many of those games that they review turn out to be FPS'. Its a psychological effect it has on me i guess, going for games with high ratings >.

What can we say, majority of the gamers love FPS (add me there XD) and it's been sellling like there's no tomorrow. Anyway, don't be too worried about the gaming industry making too many FPS games, I'm sure they're gonna be making other games, but for now they're focused on FPS because, as I've said, they're one of the best selling games out there.

PS: Don't concern yourself too much on the reviews of other people. The decision depends on how YOU like the game :). I'd be proud to say I've been playing many underrated games all these years and be proud to tell them to other people (consider this XD).

I love FPS', especially the ones with great competitive multiplayer, but having so many out there is a bit of a pain.

I have found though that by having so many FPS' means that when a great RPG or RTS comes out or any other genre, very much so the odd original ones, always end up feeling even more fun and enjoyable to play as they feel completely different to all the other games I have as 75% are FPS'.

Well, it'll eventually turn over to another genre. The next genre to get flooded could very well be MMORPG's. Devs aren't stupid, and they've seen the success of WoW, and the potential that it has. This means we just have to look better for games from unpopular genres. Luckily there's still communities to keep older genres alive. Openttd is a good example.

I totally agree with you. But let me say:

Welcome to 1993.

It may seem like this is a new thing, but it isn't. FPS rules the (North) American market, and for obvious reasons.

I'm very bored of the FPS genre and have been for quite a while, the only ones that interest me now are those that do things a little differently such as Bioshock or Metroid Prime 3.

Eh, its nothing new to the industry. Back in the 16bit days every other game was either a Street Fighter or Final Fight clone, and we see where both those genres are nowadays.

Other than Bioshock, every title you listed came from a developer that already made mostly FPS games, or a sequel to an FPS game - some from franchises almost a decade old!

Those games were going to be made regardless as that is what those developers make. They didnt suddenly decide "hey lets get on the FPS bandwagon!"

Its lower budget devs who really are the ones trying to cash in on a genre thats always been popular. But you cant fault the devs you listed as those devs have consistantly made great games (usually FPS ones). You can blame someone like Insomniac or FASA for suddenly starting to make FPS games.

At least on the PC side, it seems RTS gaming has made a bit of a comeback in the last couple of years. They will probably never take the crown from FPS games, but they do make a nice change of pace if you're having FPS fatigue.

There sure are a lot pf FPS that came out in the last few years and about 5% of them were rated 8.0 and up, which means most of them are average or plain bad. I guess most bestselling games are FPS because quality developers know that's what we want and therefore they make FPS; if we wanted more RPGs, even Bungie would make RPGs.

I personally prefer FPS over the other genres because it's the only kind of game that really tests the player's skill and reflexes, while leving him total freedom of movement and action (don't know about you, but I find restrictive and frustrating not being able to jump over fences or being enslaved by some absurd combat system like in many action adventure games).

Also, a FPS maps something like 20 keys on a keyboard, which reveals how many different actions you can perform, compared to other genres.

I don't care anymore, as long as the games are fun to play.

That's all that matter really.

And lately, RPGs have gone stale and I've been getting my fix more with FPSs and RTSs,so as long as the game's are good, I'll play them.

The first person perspective is one of the most versatile and fluid in-game modes in all of 3d gaming, and is usually much more controllable and immersive than 3rd person games. Which is why it is not surprising to see so many games of that calibur under that title (and not just shooters, but adventure games, RPGs, racing, simulation, etc.) With the increase of technology and the ever increasing interest on scientific/ action themes in all areas of our increasingly mechanical life styles, it is therefore of no surprise first person perspective games, FPS's, are becoming ever increasingly more popular in the world. Ever since the introduction of Doom in 1993, they have been iconic of nearly all of PC gaming culture, and with its expansion to consoles in the last 10 years, you can expect a lot more from this genre before all is said and done.

I still like RPGs more, but i'm not much of an on-line player see. So World of Warcraft I like, and the witcher is pretty awesome.
I do like Halo 3 and bioshock too, but not my fav. I might also add that Gears of War was totally rocking. Is that a FPS? I'm not sure. =)
