Am i the only one who thinks most games are just boring? No one seem to be working on something completly new just same basic platform and some new graphics. No new abilities that doesn't look like all the other games before. Where is the crazy take-a-chance developers?

The most innovative gaming years were the 90's, today there are a few innovative games but mostly generic, unoriginal games like Call of Duty 4 will sell more than original games.

I think some games have conformed to the ideas of their genre because developers are afraid of them bombing from being "too" original. However, there are games that take that extra leap out of their comfort box that I think make a great industry even greater. Some examples:

The Elder Scrolls Series

Katamari Damachi (sp?)

Shadow of the Colossus

Kingdom Hearts

Harvest Moon

Halo Trilogy

All of these have brought something to the table that others failed at. It's all up to what YOU enjoy though! Just some food for thought.

I could say the real creativity died with the Dreamcast, but thats not exactly true. While the most creative games are just spin-offs of DC-Games,there are more and more original titles aviable for Handhelds,PSN/XBLA or Wii.Almost all of them have a little quality problem, half finished ideas or just not what they meant to be.It´s not so easy to make a creative Blockbuster title thanks to the high production costs today, too. And the fact that many people are not "hardcore" gamers who whould pay 60Buck for Space Channel 5 or REZ.We don´t have a problem with quantity,we got a quality problem.

It´s a irony that many expensive produced titles who have gone new ways with a high quality had awful sales. For a certain point it´s the customers fault too.

That's like saying that all movies coming out these days are just worthless remakes. Although a lot of them are, many more are being made that showcase a great deal of originality. They just dont appeal to the madden masses. Such can be said for games as well.

Most games are fairly generic, but there are some original titles out there such as Spore, Katamari Damacy, or Nobi Nobi Boy. They're there if you look for them,

Well two reasons that can think of off the top of my head would be that: 1. Companies would like to actually stay in business. 2. Coming up with something that is wholly original as well as actually being a good product isn't nearly as easy as alot of people might think.

Well,Sega risked lot with creative Ideas together with high production values. The games had been great but nobody bought it after all. Most Wii-Games for example gthe different direction : Fast and cheap produced,a little bit of creativity and they are selling like crazy.Even if the Wii-Market is a bit better now, thanks to the lack of outstanding titles (exept a bunch) people buy every crap who´s got the word "creativity"on the cover or in the commercials. As long as it works, nothing will change.Or why the heck would anyone pay 60Bucks for Cooking Mama?(not that it´s bad,I never played it but as it looks on the PS3/360 nobody whould care)

Games do seem a little same old these days. That could be because I've been playing them so long that I haven't seen much new or creative recently. Portal looks like just a shootemup with a cool portal throwing gimmick. We love katamari looks unique but whats fun about rolling the world into a ball? Spore I played and it was ok but just seemed like a basic level up your creature by slogging game. But yeah so many games are exactly the same. Like spiderman 3 and prototype. or gta and all its clones, or your racing games, or your war games. At least crysis had a brilliant destruction and physics engine but at its core its just another bang bang shoot shoot game. Singstar was original. but every "rockstar' game after it was just another rehash. And yeah I miss memorable characters like Guybrush. Or storylines like FFVII. Or the sierra games like Quest for Glory. Maybe I'm just getting old.

developers don't take a game with originality because it doesn't sell, if people want orignal games but them plain and simple, people whin and moan about "lack of orginal games" but when they come out they don't buy them, personally your not the only one of the world that thinks that todays games are boring a quick search and you would see plenty of topics similar to yours, personally i think todays games are fine.
