Sounds like the battery is either dead or damaged. If you really feel like doing some digging, you can find GB storage devices, I remember having one to save multiple profiles on Poke'mon back in the day. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can get one pretty cheap.

He was refering to the battery that the cartridge itself uses to keep saved data.

Happened to my silver too and to my brother's gold and my friends crystal. Only those ones. I guess Gamefreak made some bad batches

I couldn't help but notice though on my clear GB cartidges that the battery visible looks like a standard hearing aid battery which makes sense most small objects use them. If you want to play again and the saves are already gone and unrecoverable you could always buy a hearing aid battery and replace it. I don't know this for sure though it just looks like a hearing aid battery it might not be but it is always worth a go

If the battery dies will the game be deleted forever and can not be recovered?

Think of it as an old Arcade system of Donkey Kong. On those when the power is gone whether it is a surge or its unplugged, all record data is lost because there is no back up system. so yes you lose it all unless you back it up on one of the old mem cards they used to make

If it was used there is a chance that it is a cheap bootleg version from japan. They sell like crazy on the net and people don't even know it.See there internal system is worst then the one for the NES so it is bound to fail.Check the back of the cartridge for misspellings of the word nintendo.Other then that if maybe just damaged.

if the save battery runs out you can lose MOST hope there, but you can replace it, there are some instructional YouTube videos on it, all you have to do is open the cart up, then you look at the battery on or near it you should see a number, that is the type of battery it is, then you go buy one (i think it has to be the exact one, but im not sure) after that you have to get the battery out of the cartrige, which nintendo made REALLY hard, then you just place in the new battery and tape or super glue it on, i think you can get them replaced a video game stores, but dont count on it, hope it helps
