Gamecube games have become scarce and expensive ... since the Wii came about!

I've noticed that between December when the Wii was released and now Gamecube games have all but disappeared. Even second hand games at GAME shops are really hard to come by and what's there is quite expensive for what it is (is £25 for a used copy of Baten Kaitos, or Battalion Wars acceptable?).

This can only be because a large number of Wii owners scooped them up as soon as they had a system that could play them. Which is understandable really. I just wish Nintendo and 3rd party NGC publishers kept a lot of those games in print for longer ... especially since (lack of enough great titles on) the Wii is generating demand for them.

Is this only the case in the UK, or is it like this in the US as well?

The amount of Gamecube games in stores here in Denmark is per definition low (I'm been looking for a used MGS: Twin Snakes copy for ages), but it definetely makes sense. The Gamecube, like it or not, had tons of amazing games. I still rank Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness as some of the best gaming experiences ever, and Tales of Symphonia still holds up today.

It's been like that for a while now, it was almost impossible to find any new gamecube games without buying them online, but of course now that wii is out even the pre owned ones have completely dissapeared, same with the xbox, since the 360 came out most shops dont even stock xbox games anymore.

GAME has always been a rip, even for second hand games. And cube games were never printed in the same quantity as PS2 and Xbox games, so the prices have remained high for certain titles. Games like Pikmin 2 and baiten kaitos, fire emblem. You might as well be buying a new wii game for the cost.

Tell me about it, I bet that most of the people that bought a Wii never had a Gamecube and now they see it as a chance to discover what they miss. The lack of a variety of genres on the Wii games library makes Gamecube games that much more appealing to Wii users. It really disheartening to see how Nintendo dumped the support to the Gamecube almost overnight.

Why did Nintendo even bother adding in GC backward compatibility in Wii if they're going to abandon the GC base so soon? Might as well take the backward compatibility out to save them tons of money.

Backwards compability is actually a pretty brilliant move. All the people that wanted to play just one or two specific games on the Gamecube, and didnt wanna buy one for that reason, will actually often use those games as a reason to buy a Wii, even if the Wii doesnt currently have a game they want. Also, along with being able to download and play so many great Nintendo classics, coupled with the Gamecube compability, makes for a huge bang-for-the-buck Nintendo "greatest hits" machine. Besides, everyone else was doing it :P

I know what you mean. I keep hitting eBay to see if I can get some good deals.

So far I've gotten Viewtiful Joe ( sealed ) for $12. Odama (sealed with mic ) for $15, F-Zero GX ( used with Official Guide Book ) for $14, and an official 1019 Block memory card for $20.

Now I'm trying to find a copy of Ultimate Muscle Legends vs New. :(

Í bought almost all of the Gamecube games I could possibly want during Gamecube's generation, and those that I did not buy I was able to find easily at EB/Gamestop. I even found Eternal Darkness selling for 14 bucks..but I didn't get it.

I'm surprised the games are selling for as much they are today. Some are still at the initial retail price. I saw Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles selling for 50 bucks (new) at a store in the mall. For a system that wasn't considered to be unpopular among gamers, I was shocked to see games selling so well and at steep prices.

I'm still looking for Skies of Arcadia Legends. That is the only Gamecube game I've been having a really hard time finding.

What good is it though if there are no Gamecube games readily available in retail? It's a half-arsed move. If you provide people with backwards compatibility thus giving them the chance to enjoy a bunch of existing great games ... then make sure those games are available for people to buy!

Anyway, I have a pretty hefty gamecube collection but i'm still missing a few games I kind of want: Skies of Arcadia, Baten Katos, Geist ... that's about it (i have the rest) and it annoys me that I can't get them without having to spend over £30 for a used copy (each)

In the US, they're still easy to find. I found a Eternal Darkness, MarioPower Tennis, and Ikaruga the other day. ED was fairly cheap but Ikaruga was quite pricey. So war Mario Tennis.

The point is that they're on the shelves. I guess you have to get lucky most of the time.

Like GG said, GC games were produced in lower quantity than Xbox/PS2 games. I was lucky enough to find the last copy of Eternal Darnkess for $10 brand new at Toys R us.

Ikaruga is a very rare game, its very hard to find a brand new copy even on Ebay. They go for about $70+ now (new copies that is).

Yeah... I stopped my GC-game-buying spree right before the Wii came out, so I got lucky. You're right, it does seem like a goofy decision to cut off GC game production; almost every Wii owner that never had a GC wants to go pick up some GC games.

And Biscitt, can you buy (import) games online? There are still sellers on Amazon and eBay that have TTS used...
