He booked a private room and played Diablo 3 for 40 hours straight without pausing or eating. When an employee came to check on him he was dead on the table.

He's the 6th case of death by gaming in Asia in the last 10 years. Curiously enough, this doesn't seem to happen elsewhere. What is up with these people? We have some pretty huge nerds in the west, but it's only asian nerds who have been reported to literally game until they drop dead.

The most I've ever gone without breaks is like maybe four or five hours straight, and then I felt like holy hell. I have no idea why anyone would mistreat themselves like that.

 Nice one.

Seriously, I can't feel sorry for this guy. I find it rather weird that he died from just 2 days, though. With water you should be able to live for like a week without food. Maybe something was already not alright with him?

I don't play games for more than 5 hours... not only because it makes me feel terrible but also because it ruins the enjoyment I get from playing the game, I need a break to actually keep it fun. I don't know how you could play a game for 40 hours straight, I would die from tedium aswell as not eating or drinking.

After a long continuous playtime it just gets to following the games objectives but not actually taking any of it in, story, settings, characters E.G.

I wonder if he took bathroom breaks.

If he just say there holding everything in I would imagine it would be pretty bad for his system.....

That's really sad to hear. I don't understand how people could do this to themselves and it is odd why it seems to just be people from that part of the world. These days 5 hours is the max I can play a game without taking some kind of break and even that seems too long.

I don't get how things like this happen. Wouldn't hunger eventually force you off your computer?

There was that British kid that died at like 20 from a blood clot, apparently caused by sitting still for long periods of time (he would play Halo in 12 hour sittings). Kind of makes me paranoid if I pull an all-nighter in front of the computer.

Talk about dedication. Somehow Asian's need to be studied for scientific purpose. I don't know but something is special about them.

Thirst and hunger won't kill you in 40 hours. And we don't know if he carried water/food in his room when he started.

Most likely cause of death is pulminary embulism resulting from a blod clot in his ciruclatory system due to prolonged sedentary body position. Sitting down, crossing your legs, etc, all create points where blod clots cna form if you don't move around.

Always take breaks when at work, or playing games to stretch your legs. Having a healthy cardiovascular system is also a bonus.

By the way, this has happenned in the west too, and also with tons of other games besides Blizzard's, and even with no games (people sitting at work and not stretching their legs), but of ource it's Diablo or WOW so it must be news!

Also not sure why the hate for this kid. He probably didn't have a clue about the dangers of somehting like this. People need to be educated abotu this subject. And whatever you think about a 40 hour Diablo 3 marathon, diying is NOT something the poor guy deserved, and I feel sorry for the loved ones he left behind over somehting so silly as not getting up and stretching.

By the way, the other guy who died not too long ago from a similar gmaing binge had circulatory problems. People with such problems ar emuch more prone to dying from blod clots, and I don't know what he was thinking, I'd imagine his doctor must of informed him of the dangers!

The most I ever played in one session was 18 hours of Final Fantasy XI, but I definitely took breaks. Also, 15 minute airship rides gives you plenty time to eat and or sh it.

Nope I had to get through it before the break was over and I went back to school, so I powered through it. It wasn't very hard to do.

He was probably perfectly healthy. The problem in situations like this is not starvation or anything like that, but usually sleep deprivation and the stress that gaming, especially competitively, puts on your heart. The highs and lows of long gaming binges can do a number on your heart if you don't give your body and, most importantly, your heart the rest it needs to recover. Although he could've just as easily died from a blooe clot from sitting still for all those hours. I'd definitely like to hear what the doctors rule the cause of death as.

I do not get why most of these reported deaths occur in East Asia, but rarely in the West. I do not think that East Asia culture foster this form of extreme dedication to a hobby. I also do not think these gamers suffer from any psychological disorders, but may have taken gaming as an addictive drug that they cannot stop.

Wow. Even the best games I've played I can only play for a max of probably 5 hours at a time. 40? That's crazy. And as this incident shows, stupid.

I've read that too on my local newspaper. I don't understand how you can play Diablo3 for so long in one run, it becomes boring after two hours for me. A great game for me, but not to play endlessly.

I'm sorry, I have no sympathy for these idiots. It's extremely unhealthy to do anything for that extended period of time without a break. Of course he shouldn't of died, but I have a hard time feeling for him.

You know come to think of it allowing people to book a private room to play a video game in for 40+ hours probably isn't a good idea.

This is part of the reason why I don't invest money in MMORPGs on a constant basis, because of stuff like this. I play videogames a lot, but play at least two-three hours now. For short games, I can beat them in that span of time, but other games take longer to beat. The last time I went through a game the longest was with Chrono Trigger, over 72+ hours of gameplay. Was well worth it. I didn't get that much sleep, but I made sure to take a break to eat or drink before going back to it.
