Of course I love games - who on here wouldn't, but $50-60 bucks for a game is just getting ridiculous. Here is my argument. Every other technology out there gets better, and also cheaper ! !And dont blame it on pirating either! ! Even since early Nintendo - games have always been overpriced ! even before our modern day pirating...

Even more - why is just a typical standard price of $50-60bucks from game to game - for most ALL new games? When most new games aren't even that great to begin with...! Even Batman AA - Great game, sure - but once it's beaten, is it still worth $60 bucks on Xbox? - No...

Anyways - I'm jsut griping about the upcoming November releases - lots of good games, want them all - too expensive . .

I also wanted to bump up my current level 12 to 13 with this post - haha

Technology is cheapr, but peoples salaries and advertising are not. There are more people working on a single game than ever before, and there is more hype for AAA games then ever before. Also, some of the budgets for these games are huge.

Hidden costs.

I buy games pre-owned when they cost around $7. It takes a while, but the $1500 I've spent on amassing a collection of 250+ Xbox games is equivalent to 30 of them purchased brand-new.

  1. Who told you that every new piece of technological equipment is cheaper than the last? Are you living in some universe that I don't know about?
  2. $50 - $60 is well worth the money for something that can last for years to come, and still be enjoyed.
  3. I don't know if you're aware of this, but human beings work on ALL games, not just AAA games. They deserve to eat and pay their bills like Infinity Ward or EPIC.
  4. NOTHING is worth the same price you bought it for, even if you haven't used it. So of course Batman AA wouldn't be worth $60 after you beat it - it's been used. But like I said before - games can last a very long time, and with that, a good amount of time for entertainment.
  5. Gaming is an expensive hobby. Making games is expensive in itself. If you aren't willing to pay, you won't play. That simple.

Personally all things consider with how much time and money go into making games today I find the prices to be quite fair. Anyway I don't really see a problem if you can't afford or don't feel games are worth the price they are initially then just wait for the price to drop.

That's why I choose not to get myself worried about getting the latest release. I just simply change my focus onto enjoying the classics. Besides, there's no point in griping about it. You can always rent too y'know?

i agree that games are expensive but they are not too expensive because games like snes used to cost like $70 to 80. and those games were not as deep as todays games so they didnt have that much high replay value either

I do find the standard price regardless of content or length odd. No way some games priced the same are all of similar budgets.

When you factor in the cost to develop a game, and then to market a game, I'm actually amazed that they aren't more expensive than they are.

They do get expensive, but media doesn't really get cheaper, albums are still around the same price they were from a good while back, but the hardware they're played on does get cheaper.

Personally I like to buy my games, and music, because I constantly will replay both. Whereas a movie I will replay a few times, so I'll either rent it or watch it on tv.

You can do what my friends and I will do though, go pick up a game each, and borrow eachother's games after you each finish or decide to finish the game you got.

I agree, they are very expensive, especially when you pay sixty bucks for a piece of poo game, it's just a waste of money, but when you buy something like Little Big Planet, MGS4, Uncharted, or other great games, they leave you feeling very...satisfied!!!!

As anyone who's been gaming a long time knows, gaming has ALWAYS been expensive. At some points, it was actually MORE expensive than it is now. I was digging through some PS1 games and found several that cost $69.99 (the price tag was still on it). I also remember paying $99.99 for Super Street Fighter II on the Genesis way back when. I recall the standard, here in Canada, for new 16-bit games often being $99.99, $79.99 at best.

In all fairness, while most games may start around the same price ($50-$60 opening week), if they suck, they usually drop in price pretty rapidly. Like, within weeks.

Sorry but I think that the games need to be this price, after working corporate for a while now I can really see how commodities and services can be so expensive. Salaries, advertising, supplies, rent, electric, medical, dental, insurance, packaging, and a plethora of other things! I think we should be lucky they are $50 - $60 and not more! Starting a game company is hard, but one day I will start one! I am driven too!

I just wait until the price comes down. I'll only pay full price for a AAA title that I'm super excited about. I also play a lot of PS2 games - they're practically giving them away compared to current gen prices. The games are every bit as fun when Iplay them as they are for the guys who get everything the day it comes out.

naa I dont find them all that expencive, altho they cost around 80 - 90 bucks here, The amount of entertainment I get out of it, far exeeds the price of a movie, or a cd. (they are about 30-40 bucks.)

I do not really complain about prices tho, I know a few who are/were in the industry, they really aint paid all that well, even when a hit lands from thier hands all the expences they pay has to be covered too. I do agree that Publishers does take quite a huge bite out of the cake, but they too has to pay thier bills.

People still seem to think that making a game is the jobof 4-5 people, when reality has it that it is WAY different.

I can't believe that so many of you are actually defending the price of games! Sounds like you actually Want to pay higher prices!!?

And for all of you who are telling me about the the price is subjected to the people who create the game and whatever else......Well, of course thats what the price if for ! !

Think about how much it costs to create a Movie - a lot more than it does for a Video Game-And as u know, DVD's cost $10-20 dollars and Even on Blu-Ray u can get them for the same price..

So, if a movie can cost that little - so should a Game... IMO - the only games that should cost even $50.00, should be only the 9.0 or higher rated games ! !

Its amazing how many experts there are on this site...Geez thanks for the hint Mr. Guiness.

And games aren't making a profit? I read Batman AA - is selling over a million copies a week - that translates to quite a success.

Good games should cost more - average or below average should cost less.

And why in the world would u actually want to pay more for a game??? What's the point in arguing about this???

Yeah, I totally agree that games are expensive.

I usually just wait for games to come down before I get them, such as Resident Evil 5.

The only times I pay $60 are when the game is apart of a series that I know is good, and I just have to play it.

For example, Modern Warfare 2 is one of the few games that I might pay $60 for.

In this thread: users who are too young to remember Zelda for the NES priced at $80.

Take inflation into account. Games have never been cheaper than they are today.

It's not so much as wanting to pay a higher price it's simply just an understanding of being willing to pay a fair price. Movies have different avenues of making money that's why the DVD's are cheaper. Selling games at a price related to review scores would be highly foolish and besides if that's how you want to purchase your games then you're perfectly free to do that. Anyway I just don't see why you don't simply wait and get them when they drop in price.

There's a big difference between paying $10 - $12 to see something like lasts 1.5 - 2 hours, and paying $50 - $60 for something that can last a life time, and you actually interact with that object. You merely watch the movie. It's not the same case with games, and for whatever reason you just can't understand that.

And you're opinion on games having a 9 or higher should be worth $50 is still idiotic at best. I really don't think you understand how the world works.

I noticed that most people replying on this thread fall in certain categories:

1. don't care and say they have always been expensive

2. Games are very expensive and should be lowered in price

3 In between

First of all the guy who made this thread is right, prices are too high and if you are a "real" gamer then you know that gaming has always been expensive but not to this degree. When gameboy color came out it $100 and other consoles at that time were of similiar price, there has never been a system with an original cost of $600. Try asking your cheap grandmas to buy it and see what happens, nothing. 100 was managable, recent pricesr not. try renting

luigi2006

Nope, you're wrong.

The 3DO was $700 when it first came out, which was a hundred bucks more than the PS3's original launch price.

The NeoGeo's launch price was $650, which would make it more than twice the price of the PSP Go.

Let's not also forget the Sega Saturn, which, at the time of its release, was $400, which puts it right on par with the X360 Elite's initial pricing.

How soon do some people forget.

So Blade - are u saying that gaming has become cheaper? what's the wrong u're referring to? As i mentioned, just about every other technology has become cheaper - except games. I really dont remember at all what an NES game cost back when I was a kid - seems like atleast $40 bucks. I know my folks lost thier mind when i wanted a new game. To respond to your comment - consoles are sorta yes and no - PS3-$600 on release, cheaper now, 360-$300 on release, cheaper now, Wii same....
The games though..U'd think, with computer technology getting better and cheaper for the past few years - the games would be a liiiiiittle cheaper to make. Maybe a bit more time spent on making a good game - but they're not necassarily utilizing all the latest and greatest technologies.--For example-only a handful of optimized dual-core games even exist..

Yes, they're expensive.... so are my cable/internet, car payments, house/rent bills.Dogswithguns
Internet atleast - the speed increases over time, so u eventually get more for ur money. Rent/Carpayments and house are subjective to Your budget - so u can control what you actually pay..! Games are consistantly, $50-$60.oo

100 was managable, recent pricesr not. try renting

He's wrong on 2 counts:

1) That "gaming has always been expensive, but not to this degree" (he makes it sound as if prices today are a lot higher compared to before, which is for the most part, untrue)

2) "There has never been a system with an original cost of $600" (not true, both the 3DO and the NeoGeo surpass the PS3 pricewise)

And yes, when you take inflation into account, gaming is actually a lot cheaper compared to before. This is especially true when you consider the amount of features, better gameplay, superior production values, and such that go into the finished product. Yes, there have been a select number of NES titles that were $40, but most of the time they were either too short or were incredibly lacking as far as effort was concerned.

That's why I choose not to get myself worried about getting the latest release. I just simply change my focus onto enjoying the classics. Besides, there's no point in griping about it. You can always rent too y'know? BladesOfAthena
Thats basically what i do when i get bored with a new game, i revert to the classic games Like Half-Life series, Jak and Daxter, hell sometimes i break out my playstation and mess around with tekken 3 and an old spiderman game i got along with the rest of a 50 game collection

I just think we're at the point these days, that gaming manufaturers can afford to lower prices a little. Im not suggesting drastically, but no more that $30.00

Really - who plays the most games?? People under 30y/o. And who usually makes less money? People under 30y/o.

Of course kid's parents buy them thier games - but not all parents ha enough money to keep them up to day on the latest games--so, they pirate.

Fortunately, Im over 30 and have a great job and can keep up - but its still expensive... And i havnt seen a drop in prices in over 10 years..

Games where I live cost from 85-100 dollars, so 60-70 bucks would be a dream.

Vari3ty

Where do you live that it costs so much?

I live in Iceland, but even before the economic crisis, games cost about 60 dollars, so...

Really? Last time I checked on www.theesa.com, the average age of a gamer in the US was 35, and have been playing video games for 12 years. It wouldn't suprise me if these trends also occured in othe regions.

And what you're saying doesn't make sense to me. A kid, who begs their parents to buy a game, doesn't get the game, so a kid pirates it...? I highly doubt a kid would even know what pirate means if they're begging their parents to get it for them.

EDIT: OH! I get it now!

The parent, who won't even be playing the game, will go out of their way to pirate the games for their kids! It makes perfect sensenow!

[QUOTE="Xsan3"]Its amazing how many experts there are on this site...Geez thanks for the hint Mr. Guiness.

And games aren't making a profit? I read Batman AA - is selling over a million copies a week - that translates to quite a success.

Good games should cost more - average or below average should cost less.

And why in the world would u actually want to pay more for a game??? What's the point in arguing about this???

Xsan3

This post merely sums up just how much you don't understand.

Either that, or you're just trolling.

OMG ur sooo right!! I have no idea that i don't like paying too much for games - and u do ! Im glad u enjoy paying top price for a game, thats incredibly intuitive of u!! Ur such the man for pointing that out ! ! I didnt have a clue how the world works - ah, it has nothing to do with gaming corporations wanting to become wealthy!!

ZOMG! S4rcast1c p0st FTW!!!!!!!11111one!!!!!!

When it comes to game pricing, the labor used to make the game is pretty much what sums up the costs for games nowadays. It's not so justifiable for back in the NES days, but today it's far more reasonable.

Games have such prices because not only are games extremely expensive to make and market, but the people making the games need to get paid as well, and the number of employees in the industry is sky rocketing. They deserve to eat and pay their bills, thus the price of a game is $50 - $60. Not to mention, we're in the worst economic state since The Depression, so the over saturation of sequels in inevitable in such times, because they don't want to risk tanking by making something new. Which is also the root of all these "ZOMG! Game X is totally NOT worth $60!!!!!" threads and what have you.

It doesn't matter if the game is crappy or not, that's just how it is. And you just chose to be ignorant and not take heed to the truth of the situation. I mean hell - we're lucky that games don't have price tags of over $100 in most places, let alone the price of the consoles themselves.

And you claim to be 30 years of age. I'm 15. If I can understand why games are priced as they are these days, and you don't, I guess wisdom and knowledge don't always come with age now, do they?
