Eurogamer reports that the unpopular service is going away.  I think this is a good thing as long as it doesn't impact too many games that use the service.  I suspect Dark Soul's online mode will shut down.

Crack open the champagne, hallelujah. :D

The question is of course, what will happen to the games that had GFWL as mandatory, including GTA IV? Will they patch GFWL out of it or will it just launch without needing to authenticate with the MS server?

Good, although I don't know why are they waiting for another 10 months. Just pull the plug on the damn thing right away. Everyone is using Steamworks anyway.

I know I can get Dark Souls to launch with my laptop in airplane mode, but it will only do it once without me reconnecting to the internet. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

kinda happened just after valve's former business mgr left for Microsoft. Maybe MS was originally planning to drop it for future XBOX live integration, but you kinda wonder if that had any part in the sudden change. Ahh who knows...

I'm certain I saw a story somewhere about the developers porting the game to Steamworks now. So yes.

They should run a clearance sale on whatever stuff they still have available. I'd be down for a digital copy of Viva Pinata.

Of course since it's asshole Microsoft, the games will remain the same price until the thing croaks uneventfully.

That moment when servers are shut down and people start wondering if this game or that game will still work. Hilarious. "Truly this is the future of gaming"

I want to say good riddance, but I've been fortunate to never have any real issues with gfwl. Can't say that I'll miss it, though I am a little worried for the games that don't make the switch over to steamworks. Gonna be pretty upsetting not being able to play Dark Souls and a few other games.

At least we'll have Dark Souls 2. It's apparently using Steamworks, so online play should be nice and easy.

Good. Now if only MS could understand why GFWL failed, and realize that the same reasons can be used to explain why Xbox Live is garbage...
