Lets all post games that are great for introducing you into their respective genre. I'll start:

Horror

Resident Evil 4 is an excellent game to get yourself acquainted with if you want to buy a horror game. Unlike most horror games, it doesn't have zombies and it isn't nearly as scary as other horror games. It may have it's scary moments, but this can be a great stepping stone into more scary horror games.

F.E.A.R is also an excellent game to buy if you want to try the horror genre. This is an FPS/Horror hybrid, and there is more emphasis on the FPS. It has great atmosphere that all horror games sport and isn't that scary also, probably less scary than RE4.

---

Continue it for me! What games in other genres would be a good starting point? Like JRPGs and MMOs?

I'd like one for RTS's. I thought Herzog Zwei might be that type of game, but it was very RTS-y. RTS-y enough to the point where you had to have played an RTS before to understand it.

For Western RPGs I think Knights of the Old Republic is a great game to start with. It's a Star Wars based game so it's essentially a franchise that everyone already knows. The character customization system is relatively easy for newcomers to understand. The combat is pretty easy and straight forward and appears realtime despite actually having turn-based rules under the hood. Also, for a Western RPG, its actually a great looking game. Most of all, its got an excellent story that can appeal to hardcore RPG fans but is also easy to follow. In fact, in some ways KOTOR can be viewed as a game that would easily appeal to fans of the action adventure genre just as much as it would to fans of the Western RPG genre.

if you want to get into RTS genre, don't play Starcraft.

That was my first RTS game, which quickly got me into RTS no doubt, but after playing Starcraft rest of the RTS felt like they were cr@p.

I can only hope Starcraft II can get me into RTS again.

Breath of Fire is the game that really got me into RPG genre. Dragon Quest II is similar to Starcraft. It killed the RPG genre for me because it was too good. Thanks to Breath of Fire, I managed to really get into RPG genre instead of one specific game.

As for Survivial Horror, serisouly don't play RE4. RE4 is good game but not that great and story really sucks. I also don't think RE4 really is much of survivial horror but more of just another third person shooter. The element of fear really wasn't alive with RE4. If I think about it, RE series gives you too much weapon to work with. Except for RE1, RE games became more of action game than survivial horror.

If you want to get into survivial horror genre, play Fatal Frame series.

I think you guys are kind confused on what i'm getting at. I'm writing down games for gamers who normally doesn't like a certain genre, but want to get into the genre.

RE4 and FEAR i recommended because they are more of Survival-Horror Light. You would start off the gamer on something easier, and then ease them into the more hardcore games in the genre, such as Fatal Frame or Resident Evil 1.

I agree with Pokemon for RPGs. I dont really like JRPGs that much, but i'll play the Pokemon games!

Dragon Quest II ... was too good.

TriangleHard

Really, because there were better RPG's. It was a step in the right direction, but the quest felt a bit disjointed. The series didn't get its act together fully until DW3, and went the extra mile with DW4.

I didn't get to play Dragon Quest III when it came out.

What happened was after Dragon Quest II, I tried couple of other RPGs like Final Fantasy 1, Ultima, Zelda, and Dragon Quest 1 and thought RPG genre sucks and only Dragon Quest II was good by luck. I didn't try another RPG after that(because games are expensive) until Breath of Fire came out. Then I played Final Fantasy IV, and ultimately Secret of Mana and then I was hooked for good. That's when I searched old games like Dragon Quest III.

Two good games to get you into the "So-Hard-I-Just-had-a-Brain Hemorrhage" genre is Ninja Gaiden and Breakdown for the Xbox.

I recommend both if you enjoy mental anguish. I know I do!

On a serious note: If you want to get into JRPGs try Grandia III. It is turn based combat but with a great deal of action occuring in the battle area. Lotsa fun!

For RTS games I suggest Company Of Hero's its not like any other RTS ever made really, its kind of like an action called Cannon Fodder but more intense. Its basically like playing Army but better.

For Turn Based Strategy games the Advance Wars series on GBA/DS are a good introduction as they lack a lot of complexity that the PC TBS have but still have a high fun factor.

For 3d Action Adventure the Zelda games are quite easy to get into without being short.

For RTS I agree with EmptySki on the Age of Empires 2 reccommendation, as that was the game that introduced me to RTS. It was a simple enough to get into yet still provided a challenge.

For Cricket the Ricky Ponting/Brian Lara(Depending on which region) International Cricket 2005 are a good starting place to learn to play cricket game. They are fairly arcade-y so you can get a feel for the game.

I definitely agree that Age of Empires 2 is the perfect game to get yourself acquainted with RTS games. The introductory level is really good.

RTS

Age of Empires II: Very easy to get in to and yet it's a very deep game. Great game that offers a great challenge.

Command and Conquer: This got me into RTS because of it's simplicity and it's fun to play.
