I'm currently playing through MGS3: Snake Eater again and I noticed that it's much more fun since I've left the Very Easy difficulty. In Very Easy I would get the EZ Tranquilizer gun and was able to just put my enemies to sleep. Now that I'm playing on Normal, I have to worm my way around the enemies, sneak up on them to take them out and sometimes I have to setup an ambush.

Have you ever played a game, switched up the difficulty and it actually got even better?

From Easy to other difficulties, yes. For instance, I always learn Civilization on easier settings then move on once I mastered that difficulty.

MGS4 got fun while playing on BBE. Before it was just a cake walk.

Forza 3, i started out on easy difficulty with all assists on and won every race with 5+ seconds between me and 2nd place car. now im playing on normal with only traction and stability assists on, auto transmission and braking only line. Now the races are actually challenging, its funner to win a close race then win by a landslide

Mass Effect 2 on insanity was like an entirely new game. It forced you to intelligently build a complimentary team, manually position squadmates, and use apprioprate powers. The Shepard-only, Rambo-style of mindless gameplay was out the door.

I found that Shadow of the Colossus gets better over time. Not from difficulty but artistically too. When you play a myriad of endless FPS and third person shooting games all trying to get the Graphics King title, its only when you go back to gems like SOTC you realise how good it is. It is a game that will defy time. It will always be good. It accomplished staggering scale and graphics with a very invigorating story and all it had was a dead girl a man and a horse. Only 2 characters talked. It truly is an excellent experience

Uncharted 2 gets better with crushing and you feel the game is challanging you to beat it. Also MGS4 on big boss hard when you dont want anbody to know where you are it really gets beter because you want to remain undetected and use stealth. and the enemies are more aware of the things around them and will catch you easily unlike easy mode or maybe normal. And batman arkham sylum on hard the game gets more challangeing and fun the bosses are harder and the blue thing doesnt appear when you counter and you take more damage and die easily i prefer that after playing normal since i play hard after i beat any game on normal first.

Flight Simulator X. It's hard to believe one game can spawn a whole cottage industry of payware and free add-ons. Even its predecessor, FS2004 is still strong due to all the payware add-ons.

Oh... I came in here expecting a thread about re-experiencing games 5, 10, 15 or 20 years after they've come out... >_>

As for the actual topic at hand, my greatest experience with this would be with The Ultimate Doom and Doom II: Hell On Earth. Back when I started playing Doom II as a kid (at 8 years of age, shortly after it came out), I would only play on "I'm Too Young To Die" and would use cheats like iddqd (invulnerability), idkfa (all weapons, keysand full ammo) and idclip (run through walls) to make playing easier. I would play the game on and off throughout the years up until present... but it was about three years ago I discovered Skulltag (a.wad launcher that adds things like free-aim, jumping and 3D graphics) that I pushed the difficulty up to "Ultra Violence" and started experiencing the "true" Doom experience. It was intense, frustrating and incredibly enjoyable. Though, I have to admit, there would have been no way I could have played on UV when I was that young... my skills were just not that great, and I didn't have as good hand-eye coordination as I do now.

Most 'good' games get better the farther you get into them.
