oh man I like this thread
Final fantasy 6,final fantasy 8,super smash brothers brawl, and I can think of many more.
final fantasy 6 because i tried to play it later and maybe in the 16 bit days it was a master peice but I honestly prefer part 4 way over 6.Even though part 4 didnt seem as in depth I think its game play was better in general.I also think final fantasy 8 is one the worst games ever made, watching those stupid summon cut sceens and drawing magic really sucks.
and super smash bros brawl too me was almost just like super smash bros melee, and i hate how u can get owned by cheap tricks.I like my fighters more in depth.Like street fighter or mortal kombat, if you loose on one of those its your own fault. On super smash brothers you can get just straight up wacked with cheap tricks.
i dont think super smash bros was horrid though just not that grand too me.

FF6 is still one of my favorite games and I play through it now and again. FFX was a huge let down because it was the first one on the then new console and I feel that it is the worst FF game. Dragon Age 2 was a huge dissapointment. I went in expecting a good rpg sequel to the first DA, instead I got a dumbed down action game.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is my biggest disappointment from this gen. I hated the story, and yes, I have played the previous games. It was, imo, slowly paced, poorly written relied too much on plot devices and had poor character development (particularly the B&B Corps). The B&B Corps played no role in the story, and you practically knew nothing about them prior to fighting them.
Every plot-twist and revelation was pretty much the same thing. Gameplay-wise, it was a huge step-down from MGS3. The game would camoflauge by itself, and the Drebin Points made the game too easy. It also eliminated the need to explore and conserve ammo, since you can just buy some. Ran out of ammo during a boss fight? No problem! Just press start and buy some.

Good choice, I agree. MGS 4 was a major disappointment, as was GTA4.
L.A Noire
Amazing game, but the quest on 100% wasn't fun at all. I fell asleep finding all the film reels--free roam is absolutely boring, plain and pointless. Street Crimes are extremely repetitive imo...
Also the ending sucked, I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't played it, but I didn't like it.
Personally I think the Homicide Desk had a better ending than the games actual ending, :S
There were some nice twists in the game, but I just felt like a lot was missing. They could've done SO much more to L.A Noire's free roam, and for a single player only game, you'd expect to have TONS of stuff to do, but nah.
Free Roam felt so forced that it was part of completion to get in every vehicle in the game. wow.
Did I just call it an amazing game then moan about it? Well..it was a good game but it wasn't worth the hype :(

This expresses my feelings exactly. It never once felt like an MGS game. The boss fights were one of its cornerstones. Giving you incredible insight into the characters you battled against. You knew them before you fought them. You didn't just get a rundown from a guy after each fight. It was horrible how they did that. The game constantly funnelled you everywhere. There was no extra hidden paths or exploration to be done. Everything was just given to you on a plate and you got to pick and choose.
I think the gameplay of it and the camera angle etc. and obviously the graphics are the best in the series but that it all I will say. The rest of the game was just a mess really. The story in MGS games were already convuluted enough but MGS4 took it to a whole new level of stupdity. It was like closing time at the loose end factory and Hideo was trying to tie as many as he could before the doors shut

Definitely L.A. Noire. I was expecting the same great gameplay as GTA IV and RDR, but it looks like they spent most of the budget for L.A. Noire on professional actors, the complex facial animation and enough video cut scenes to run a weekend cable TV marathon. The laughable physics, lack of AI, clunky driving, bugs and ridiculous environmental sounds make for awful gameplay. The high ratings this game has been getting are scandalous. There should be an investigation.

Awww mannnn uncool :( But I do see why some people wouldn't like it. Im afraid for all the hype the HD collection is building. Because a LOT of people will think its gonna be the best game ever and it will be completely different to what they thought. But it is and always will be my no.1 favourite game of all time :P
Crysis 2, much worse than the original as far as gameplay...the suit was so much less fun. I also didnt like the setting or artstyle as much either.
Oblivion, A shadow of its predecessor. Copy and pasted world, with very few voice actors for how many characters there were. Really dumb looking orcs. Numerous other complaints.
I just recently started the God of War series with the first game a few days ago. I heard great things, and I guess for its time it was a great game, but I don't see it. It's fun and I'm enjoying myself so far, but the camera absolutely kills me. I hate that the right stick rolls and I can't control the camera with it, like I can with most third person games. I really hope GoW 2 and 3 have different controls (I'm going to look at the game control menus to see if I can change it, but I doubt I can).
The Gears of War series has dissapointed me. A lot of my friends and people online rave about the series, but I just can't get into it. After hearing all the hype I expected me to like it much more, but it's just decent imo.
Halo 3 was a bit of a let down for me. Halo 2 is one of my favorite games so I guess my expectations going into 3 were too high, but there were just some things in the game I didn't like.
By far my biggest dissapointment is MW2. CoD4 is probably my favorite game of this gen. I played MW1 a ton and absolutely loved the game, but MW2 was such crap compared to it. It's hard for me to believe the same company made MW1 and MW2.

I was never able to finish it; the framerate and controls put me off. I heard the HD collection will fix the framerate, so I might rent it and try to finish it this time.
Bioshock, it was fun at first but then it became boring about 2 hours in.
Kingdom Hearts II, it was linear, really easy, no improvement gamplay wise, and the story wasn't as good as the first.
Mario Time Machine, I thought a game with mario traveling through time will be awesome, but this game was a bad educational game
GTA 4 (boring), Halo 3 (unimpressive), Mass Effect 2 (story was lacking in substance like crazy and the rpg elements were skimped on a lot).
Lately Brink and White Knight Chronices 2 have been very dissappointing!! Brink was na incomeplete utter **** mess while WKC2 was boring as hell with no changes at all from the first. It just threw you in the game.
-Dino Crisis : resident Evil + Dinasuars sounds way better in theory then it was in practice.
-Final Fantasy 12 : I bought this game th day after it came out and could only stomach about 3 hours of gameplay because of the awful battle system and the even worse characters.
-Gran Turismo 5- While it is at its core a good game, it is far inferior to any of the PS2 releases.
-Pokemon Black/White- the first pokemon title that I just didn't care for.
I totally agree with everything you just said! Also with GT5 there was just far to many screens and buttons!-Dino Crisis : resident Evil + Dinasuars sounds way better in theory then it was in practice.

Yup. Yet the game still scores a 9.0 on GS. I know I will get flamed for it, but it sounds like GS was paid some incentive for such a high score. Felt more like an 8.0-8.5 game to me.Contact
Metroid: Other M
No More Heroes 2
Left 4 Dead 2 (on release, before they added the first game's cast as playable characters)
Ocarina of Time (the later 3D Zeldas didn't disappoint me because I wasn't expecting to enjoy them in the first place, hence they "lived up" to my low expectations.)
Thunder Force 6
Raiden 3
Guilty Gear Isuka
Final Fantasy 8 and X-2
Rule of Rose
Assassin's Creed I - Boring main character (IMO) and insanely repetitive. Luckily they fixed those issues with AC2.
Bioshock 2 - A good game in it's own right but when compared to Bioshock I it's average. Also had Generic Multiplayer which I expected.
Fallout 3 - TESIV: Oblivion is my favorite game this generation. I heard it was Oblivion with guns and even though is has alot of similarities is definitely not. A great game but not what I was expecting.
Grand Theft Auto 4 - Too much focus on narritive. not as fun as previous entries, repetitive mission structure.
White Knight Chronicles -I expect much better from Level 5. WKC is very generic and boring to an extent.

I don't know about the GS motivation for the L.A. Noire rating, but I just don't see it being worthy of a 9.0 and an Editor's Choice. I was so annoyed by the illogical story and poor gameplay that I will probably never play it again. It was nowhere near what I was expecting. A lot of the 9.0+ user reviews read like they came from the marketing department. It looks suspiciously like an effort was made to run up the average user score for the game.
I'm replaying GTA IV now just to cleanse my psyche.
Final Fantasy XIII - I sat there pressing X for 15 hours until I almost fell into a monotony induced coma. It temporarily killed my interest in gaming - I didn't feel like turning my PS3 on for a week afterwards.
Gran Turismo 5 - just a half-a**ed hi-def remake of GT4. Almost no new tracks (with plenty of GT4 favorites missing), the career mode was little more than a boring grind-fest, no adjustable difficulty so it was truly the easiest "racing" game I've ever played in my life, the AI cars were so poorly programmed it was absolutely pathetic, and it took them six freakin' years to make it? I think any other developer could have put out a vastly superior product in 18 months.
Call of Juarez, I thought it would be a very cheap substitue for RDR...boy was I wrong.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
Condemned; I had played the second before the first and found the second to be much better.
Alan WakeEmiPark
Same, I got it really late, I had heard lots of great things about it, but the ending sucked IMO.

You cant... be serious?
Actually... I can see someone making completely legitimate complaints about Xenosaga, and furthermore, Xenogears' 2nd disc. How about letting the player actually, you know, play?I was very disappointed with Dragon Age 2. I never really expected much from the first game when I originally bought it but loved it and ended up making it my first (and thus far only) platinum, and have played it through a few times outside of trophy hunting as I enjoyed the story and the gameplay.
Before Dragon Age 2 was released I heard about some of the changes being made and while I was not keen on them, once I played it, then it did not become an issue. That being said though for some reason I can not explain I did not really find the gameplay that enjoyable and really disliked the story. I understand that the franchise is moving on, the first being a set-up to explaint he story behind the world of Dragon Age, and then the next and probably future games telling the story of Hawk, but it just seemed to lack the polish or something that the first game had.
Moon for the DS. I was in need of an action game for my DS, and I thought this would be ideal. Looking at the trailer, I was thinking "Holy Crap, those graphics!" "Looks pretty dark and atmospheric, too..." "It's like a T rated System Shock in the palm of my hand!" "It's from the creators of Dementium, people liked that, right?" "OMG GRAFFIX"
So Ibought the game, and yes, the first ten minutes of the gamewere just what I was anticipating. The rest was a dreary and repetitive eight hour slog through derivitive multicolored corridors, collecting keycards, with occasional stops to pump plasma into respawning weaponized floating spheres. There are no humanoid enemies, just a bunch of multicolored spheres and the occasional stationary robot boss.
The moral of the story is to stay away from ambitious "tech demo" looking games on the DS, they rarely have the substance to back themselves up.
I pretty much agree with everything you said. The B&Bs really had nothing to do with the plot, not like Foxhound or Dead Cell and the whole Drebin Point system ruined the feeling of isolation felt in previous games. As for the story I really didn't like the plot twists especially the one with Liquid and the hypnotherapy. I don't think they thought it through considering how it contradics much of MGS2. Still it's my favourite game this gen, that's how much I love MGS.Metal Gear Solid 4 is my biggest disappointment from this gen. I hated the story, and yes, I have played the previous games. I was really, really dissappointed by Twilight Princess at first. However I've gone back and replayed it and I see that it's a great game.
I'd say Assassin's Creed and Red Dead Redemption. AC was just too repetitive in the bad way to be much fun although it had its moments and RDR was just meh in msot ways, aside from shooting and production values.
AFL Live
If you're not Australian you don't realise how heartbreaking it was when the game turned out to be "Meh". Australian Rules Football is our national game, being said, we haven't had a console version of the game since AFL 2007 was released. AFL Live was thrown in development for years, being expected be released in 09, 10 then finally in mid-11... and boy-yo hopes were dashed. Maybe it's the complexity of the sport itself and the inability of the console/tv to display it to it's full extent, but wow, it's a ridiculously challening game at first that takes too long to adapt to as well as being unrealistic.
Did have some good menu's though.
Grand Theft Auto 4: I enjoyed GTA 1-San Andreas. However GTA4 was just downright boring. So many things wrong with that game such as mission variety, wanted system, gunplay ect.
Civilization 5: I spent a few hundred hours on Civ 4, As for Civ 5, I spent less than 20. Went back to Civ 4 shortly after.
Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword: This one was my own fault really, I was well aware the development had been done by a company that is not Taleworlds. Mount and Blade: Warband is one of the best games to come out in recent times, and when the sequel was just mediocre, yeah an invisible war. Went back to Warband after a short while.
Dragon Age: Origins: This game should have been great. It does so many things well, it has tactical combat, it has an expansive universe, plenty of dialogue and if that wasnt enough, you also get to choose your characters origins. However it was bogged down by the following: mmo quality quests, terrible encounter design copy pasted ad nauseum, threat system, generic characters, terrible writing.

Honest to god, I went into Xenogears expecting an RPG to blow me away. I had missed out on the game back when it was released, and after hearing so many good things, I went in with the highest expectations. Twenty hours in, I put down the controller and walked away. The story was hard to follow (poor translation aside, I was keeping a notepad handy so I could remember all the funky names and terms), and the gameplay subpar. Terrible letdown. Xenosaga bored me in as little as three hours. Too many cutscenes, too little gameplay. I knew it'd be like this going in, but it still bummed me out. Please Log In to post.
