I think some of us have hated a game at first and considered tossing it, but took the time to play again and had an absolutely great time playing through it. If you've had a game like this, what was it? What turned you off initially, but then made you appreciate the game?

i completely hated Gears of War. all the hype, people forcing it down my throat, just led to when i actually played it, i thought it was a steaming pile of excrement.

then i played it online. yeah... can't get enough now.

I don't know If I love playing it "right now", but I never liked the first Resident Evil for GC. Then my friend let me borrow the game and guide and once I got about a 3rd of the way through it, I loved it.

I have one on the tip of my tongue but it's just not coming to me. I'll see if I can remember it tonight. A Japanese RPG, perhaps... Maybe Icewind Dale II... I can't recall. The first thing I thought of when reading this topic, though, was Deus Ex. Mind you, I never hated it. I simply had zero interest in it. I got it free with my video card in the summer of 2001, and after testing it for a few minutes as if it were just a FPS, it fell by the wayside amidst Diablo 2 LOD and Anarchy Online. About forteen months later, I finally gave it another chance when I had a lack of games to play, and it quickly become (and has settled in as) perhaps my favorite PC game.

Umm...there aren't any games like that for me. I don't play games for long that I don't want to play.

Resident Evil 4 - When I first put this game in, I could not beleive my eyes. "what have they done to my beloved RE?!" I cried. But as time wore on and I gave it a proper chance, it grew on me. Now I think its one of the best games of the previous gen.

I have two the first is a new game I got DOA4 as at first I thought it was dumb half naked chicks fighting it up, and to be good at the game all you need to know is how to counter and know any combos that do more than 4 hits. The other was Duck Hunt, because when I first played it I couldn't hit a single duck and that stupid dog would keep laughing at me, eventually I got a decent eye and could shot anything that got in my way and the dog became no problem.

Diablo 2. At first I didn't like the fact that it wasn't a real RPG. Later on, when I played it online with some friends, I got hooked.

Final Fantasy XI. I was one of those people who considered it "not a real FF" and refused to even read up on it. Then I actually gave it a chance...one of the better decisions in my life. Now I can't get enough of it. Better late than never?

When I was a little 4th or 5th grader, I played Final Fantasy VIII, and the Junction system made no sense to me whatsoever. It didn't take me that long to completely lose interest in the game. I'm 16 now, and like 6-8 months ago I finally decided to replay FFVIII, and since I was much older, I was able to understand the junction system and fully enjoy the game.

I used to find Thief: TDP to be a bit scary/tense, but I got used to it and have now played the trilogy. Can't think of any others atm ... maybe Commandos 1+2 ...

I used to hate turn-based RPGs like Final Fantasy and such--random battles just irritated me to no end. However, over the past couple years, I'm starting to like them more. This is solely because of the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games. Those games are a ton of fun. I don't know if I will ever like turn-based RPGs enough to play all the way through a Final Fantasy game or not, but at least now Iwouldconsider it. :)

Dead Rising.

Then once I accepted it, flaws and all, I played it again as Mega Man.

Ogre Battle 64 was the biggest contrast. Starting with no direction, confusing battles in which you controlled seemingly nothing. But putting in the time and reading through that massive manual, it's become one I consider a classic.

I still dislike turn-based. I prefer rushing into a battle and initiating the fight yourself without it coming to you when you don't expect it. Maybe that will change in the future.

Morrowind for me. When I first bought the game I thought it was horribly ugly and boring as all hell. I stopped playing it for almost a year. But, the next time I picked it up (along with a few select mods) I was hooked and couldn't stop playing.

I didn't hate it, but I thought Resident Evil 4 was a bit too average to be deserving of all the hype. Then when I went back to it a few months later I loved it, even enough to buy it again with the Wii version.
