The best story ever has to be Mafia (not Mafia 2). If anyone has ever played that will agree with me. The music, the story, and the characters made the whole game an amazing experience. No game has ever captured me from start to finish.

Bioshock is also up there too. I love the story and how it all unravels. The uncharted series story is nothing new, however the characters and acting make the game incredible.

With that said, what are your favorite games for story telling

Also if you enjoy gaming, then do yourself a favor and play Mafia 1. The graphics are outdated (its still great and its not an eyesore) but it does not hamper from the experience.

Planescape: Torment would like to have a word with you.

Also, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father.

The good thing about storyline discussion is that whenever someone mentions an old game you can't give them the "nostalgia goggles" and scoff at them because storylines are immune to hardware advancement.

*resisting urge to say Modern Warfare 2 for lol*

Mafia 2 has a fantastic story with great characters and so does Mass Effect, GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption. Half-Life 2 is another standout.

Two of my favorite RPGs of all time have some of the best stories I've ever seen in a videogame...

Final Fantasy IV.

Chrono Trigger.

Good choice. FF Tactics.

Another classic Square title with a deep, complex story. Too bad the translation on the PSOne wasn't up to snuff though, but it wasn't hard to get a better understanding of the tale.

I don't know how much was changed, but I can understand. Kind of like how people like DB/DBZ english dub, even though there's a big difference from the original. That's a different topic.

Majora's mask, Knights in the Nightmare, Okami, Silent Hill Shattered Memories... I think there's already a thread about this, but whatever.

Deadly Premonition has an outstanding story.

Mass Effect Series and Red Dead Redemption have one of the best presented stories.

The two Mass Effect games are my current favourite. Some others I think are great are: Dragon Age, Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, and Metal Gear Solid 4.

My top 3 are...

  1. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Good story that turns out to be more than just a simple quest for inspiration.
  2. Planescape Torment. "What can change the nature of a man?" A personal quest where your quest is not to save the world or anything like that.
  3. Homeworld.

Bioshock's story is essecially a retelling of System Shock 2 which is a superb story btw. Mass Effect series was a generic mess of sci fi cliches with mostly uninteresting characters. Mother 3 has a great story but some parts feel a bit unnecessary. Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu was shaping up to have a top tier story but the second half of the game was nowhere near as interesting as the first half storywise. Majora's Mask has a brilliant plot but at the same time its subtle storytelling approach means not a lot of people knew the full story.

Cryostasis - The Sleep of Reason for me, by a pretty long distance as well. It's the only game I know where gameplay and storytelling are so seamlessly interwoven. No aspect of the game feels out of place in regard to the story, and there's plenty of depth, symbolism and philosophical background. The best aspect of the plot is that it gets consistently better as the game progresses, with the game ending in a beautiful climax. This is in contrary to BioShock, which falls apart about 2/3rds in, only to end in one of the most lackluster and out of place endings in recent memory.

1. Bioshock

2. Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions

3. Dragon Quest 1-3: they all tie in together in unexpected ways that made playing them in order a blast.

Planescape Torment has the absolute best story I've ever encountered in a game, and I don't see that changing. It's been over a decade since that game released, and I still have yet to see a storyline in a game that's as good or original as the one in Planescape Torment.

Other games with great storylines:

The Longest Journey
Grim Fandango
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Mafia
Knights of the Old Republic
Okami
Silent Hill
Silent Hill 2
System Shock 2
BioShock
Fallout
Fallout 2
Homeworld
Mass Effect 2
Heavy Rain
Clive Barker's Undying
Deus Ex

Grim Fandango is probably still my most loved storyline. Though I will give props to Full Throttle, even if the story was a little odd at times, the ending to it is just killer.
