I've only bought one game from GameStop because there was no seal on it & when I opened it, I saw 3 finger prints on it..why? Also! I want to preorder Call of Duty: Blackops, but can only be preordered from GameStop, if I go to the midnight release or daytime on the 1st day of release, will the copy of Blackops be brand new, sealed up, and untouched? Thanks!

If you bought it new it was probably the last copy on the display shelf. I've been ripped off like this before, a more appropriate title would be "used by a Gamestop employee"

They separate the disc/booklet (PC games have the serials on them) to prevent theft. I'd assume midnight launch events have games sealed and unopened as sales will be independent to a single specific game for that launch day.

That's because you probably bought the last copy. When the only copy left is the one on display then that's the one you'll get.

They open new games so they can put the case on the floor without the risk of the game being stolen. It was not technically used in any fashion but it was opened.

most game stores in australia seem to do this nowadays even retailers which sucks, so i tend to either buy from the net or go to a store that has sealed games (generally in security cases).

i have heard this before, that the gamestop employees will play the games then sell them as brand new. I bought a game last year for a christmas present from gamestop and as i was walking out of the store i noticed that it was opened and I went back in and told them that i wanted a sealed copy and they went to the back and got me an unopened copy of the game.

Yeah I have seen this before and I don't buy those copies. In my mind if it is opened then it is used and I should receive a discounted price which they refuse to give. They can't prove to me it hasn't been used.

They do this to prevent theft. Why does it even matter? Its the same game isn't it?

New is sealed. For sure, at least one instance happened where a Gamestop employee sold me an opened, scratched disc as new. I called him on it and he still tried to talk me into keeping it. "It's opened..." Then I just asked for my money back.

They do this to prevent theft. gmaster456

Can you prove this?

If I want an opened, used copy..I'll just buy it--

...wait for it!

Same game? Yeah, but in the past, I've bought what looked like new copies, only to find out that it has been tampered with before, as in scratches or fingerprints on the disc, therefore being used, so I have been ripped off in that aspect, which is why I make sure that things like the wrapper being opened a little are checked on first.

The only time when I've bought a used game that was actually brand-new was Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen for the Playstation One four-six years ago.

Yeah this is really the only reason why I almost never buy my games there. They'll open a bunch of copies so they can stick a bunch game cases on the shelves. If you pre-order or go at a midnight launch event you should be fine getting a sealed game. Even if no one actually uses the game just the thought of someone opening it before me is something that really bothers me.

They really should give a 5% discount on "new" copies that have already been opened. A car is no longer "new" once you've signed the papers and driven it off the lot, and a game is no longer "new" once the factory seal has been broken.

It depends on if the copy you buy is among the last ones they have. If it is, then it'll feel used, even though the disc itself is still in prime condition. You won't get a sealed copy unless the game recently came out.

Excluding maybe 2, every new game I've ever bought anywhere, including Gamestop, has been sealed.I've bought games months after the release, too.

It's been a year or so since I've bought any games, but this just seems like a sham.

The display copy is always taken out of the case so you probably got that one.

And if you don't want one that's opened, you don't have to buy it. You are standing right there as they grab the case off the shelf, pull the disc and booklet out of a drawer, and reunite all the components. Otherwise, they just grab one out of the case/off the counter behind them. It's not like they're hiding it. Unless you call ahead, I suppose, and they pull it aside for you. It wouldn't bother me, personally, to get one of the "display copies" as long as any codes or other such things were still valid as they would be with any "new" copy.

I'm actually getting the game during the day, not at the midnight release...So when I go in the store..Could I just ask them at the counter for "Call of Duty: Blackops", and they'll give me a sealed game? If they don't, do I say that I want a sealed version?

I never buy the ones that have been opened. I just say, "No thanks." The employees tend to look at me like I'm stupid, but that's fine - let them think what they want. A week for so ago, when I got Etrian Odyssey III, I thought, wow, this game is cool, I should look into the first two. The first one is almost non-existant, and the second one is almost as bad. I tried several local retailers...I even looked on ebay, but I'm not paying their bloated prices. Finally I looked on Gamestop's website, and saw that they had a new copy of Etrian Odyssey II in a town about 45 minutes from where I live. Here's the good part, and the reason why I quoted your post: I called ahead and asked if the copy they had was new and sealed. I was assured by the employee who answered the phone that the copy they had was sealed. I asked them to set it aside for me. I drove to their establishment. When I told the guy at the counter I was there to pick up Etrian Odyssey II he pulled the DS cartridge out of a paper sleeve and went to pull the case off the shelf. "Wait," I said. "I called ahead and was told this was a new, sealed copy." "The game is new," the employee told me, like he was explaining something to a five-year-old, "And I can seal it."

Needless to say, I walked out.

Yup yup yup...Gamestop has that lovely practice of gutting games.

I went to buy Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II last Tuesday on release day. They supposedly only had two copies left-- a sealed copy and a gutted copy. But I had a sneaking suspicion, and perhaps still do, that they had more copies than that and that they were trying to conserve.

But the most galling experience I had with Gamestop is when I bought a new game from them one time and they gave me a gutted copy. The sales associate then put the game in a plastic pouch, sealed it, and told me that if I broke the seal, I wouldn't be able to return it. Is that disgusting, or what? Here it is, already opened, with the factory seal broken, so it's technically used, and he's telling me I can't return it after it's already been resealed?

Maybe if they get a really good condition 2nd hand game traded to them and they decided to sell it as brand new. Im sure thats illegal lol but some people just care about profit
