Well i got two big ones.

When i tried to connect my ps2 for the first time to the internet my ps2 froze and i had to turn it off. When i turned it back on again i lost 300 hours from my FFX game, probably houndresa of hours on other games like PES, Here Comes The Pain etc.

I also lost 100 + hours on my Forza 3 save when i tried to move it to another device

What are yours?

The concept and overall plot was pretty saddening. The dialogue kind of ruined it because it was poorly written, but just the underlying theme is terribly depressing.

Basically it's about a old guy who lived a terrible life because he loved a women with a crippling mental disorder. He doesn't leave her because he needs to take care of her, and he does absolutely everything he can for her while putting his own happiness aside. Her condition worsens and she dies. Then when he's about to die two scientists change his memories so he thinks he lived a happy life.

Oh sorry. I read the second post first and thought it was about sad games. My "The Walking Dead Season 1" file was corrupted about 4 times while I played through it. I was able to fix it three times, but one time I was not able to and I had to replay the first 3 episodes. It ruined the game for me. Apparently it's a big problem with the steam game. Telltale's forums were filled with complaints and they refused to acknowledge it.

Well I lost my Skyrim save with 200 hours on it... I didn't cry, but was kind of pissed when it happened.

Back in the PS1 days I bought a compatible memory card (sony ones were too expensive for my pockets) and it lost all data multiple times. Most notably I lost my FF7 save and had to start over twice.

I've lost a few game saves, nothing that really haunts me. One was for some Nascar game that devastated me on the time, and another was for Pokemon Gold, which kind of sucked, but I had put more time into Pokemon Silver so I got over it pretty quickly. There was another time my sister accidentally deleted my file on some Spongebob game, and I was pissed for a while, but I re-made my progress in no time.

How did that happen?

I honestly have no idea. It was on 360, and one day when I was playing the Black Ops campaign through on Veteran I noticed my game through which I was almost through was completely gone. Didn't think much of it until when I went to play Skyrim a couple weeks later and my save was completely gone as well. Not sure what caused it, and it hasn't happened since.

Losing save data on PS1 and 2 memory cards, and game discs scratching beyond the area of playability are definitely the worst things to occur with my gaming. My dog chewing up one of my Sega Genesis controllers is also not good.

Dead batteries from Pokemon cartridges. Vase with water falling over my Playstation weeks after I bought it in 1997. PS2 falling out of cabinet because of tripping over controller wires.

Back about six or seven years ago I had a laptop hard drive damn near explode under my fingertips and lost everything on it, games and all. Also, it's not game related, but similar. Back in high school I had a little side project where I would update media formats for people at school, i.e. take VHS tapes and transfer them to DVDs, or cassettes, LPs, or 8-tracks to CDs. The downside to this was that everything was in real-time, so one cassette could take an hour or more. Well, I was about 50 or so cassettes into a buddy's metal collection when I had a power surge that destroyed every component in the computer tower I had at the time, so not only was I out a computer, but everything I'd accomplished with buddy's collection was gone (about a weeks work).

When I wanted to check up on my Pokémon Crystal after a lot of time of not playing it. The battery for the game was dead. I actually cried.

I was literally minutes away from reaching the max level in Dead Rising (took me hours upon hours to reach it), decided to delay this magnificent moment to finally get my xbox live account running and somehow during the process I lost my original profile with all my save games. I was not a happy chappy to say the least. Also lost my 100+ hour save on Just Cause 2 (I was so close to 100% completion!) and one hell of a badass Torchlight 2 character when my hard drive decided to die on me. I try not to think too much about the Torchlight one..... too painful. :P

Was back on the GameCube, I was transferring game data from one memory card to the other(note: I did do this several times before) and up out of nowhere it just deleted it and didnt transfer. All my progress on Pokemon XD was gone, it was quite depressing.

Was having a real thorough playthrough of Fallout 3, exploring everywhere, and completing everything when I had the worst glitch I've ever known in which the right analog stick locked in gameplay. Worked in menus and map, but sadly it autosaved when I went through a door, and never had a backup save that was close enough consider loading. I lost 60 hours of gameplay and now make sure I create multiple saves.

Over a decade ago, my sister destroyed the PS1 memory card I was using for Harvest Moon: Back To Nature. I had six months in total of play time on that game and my sister wasn't fond of the game, so she made sure that I couldn't play it again without restarting.

Holy crap. Six months of playtime? Your sister must have been seriously pissed at you. And you must have been really pissed as well.

I had done some weird things that glitched out my Sims 3 game and made me have to uninstall everything and then reinstall it once again, problem was though I couldn't find the disk. After searching for a few minutes I found it on the ground, underneath my computer, crushed and broken in two. I went several months before returning to a store and picking up a second copy and never letting the disc leave the compartment ever again. Either way it sucked for a while because I really enjoyed the Sims 3 and the expansion pack so to see it just die and all my previously made Simvilians just go with the uninstall and the crack made me rather pissed off at myself for letting the disc get cracked.

It's a good thing I love my sister, otherwise I think I would have killed her. She's never been fond of me, my being disabled and such and needing support so often throughout my life has fairly developed a great deal of hostility from her, to the point where she hasn't spoken a word to me in a decade and refuses to allow me to get to know my two adorable nieces. Another time she wiped my save file on Pokemon Red and gave the cart to one of her friends to stop me playing it, I had 100 Pokemon and the game completed.

I wasn't happy to say the least. It took me six months because when the game was released, there was a glitch that caused the game to crash when you got married and you had no choice but to marry in order to progress. So the developers sent new copies to those who had bought the game once they fixed the glitch, so I spent six months after I finally got my new fixed copy progressing and moving towards the end of the game. I was about maybe another week or so from finishing when my sister did what she did. Siblings, they can be very evil.

this happened to me too. i lost like 150 hours or something. i started a new game and then the autosave saved over my main file. i was pretty pissed but was like whatever and just took it as an excuse to make a pure mage glitched out OP character and a warrior too.

You were using autosave as main save file? No manual save backup?

my PS3 died last august. the sad part is that my past backup was from about a year earlier.

Its funny because I was thinking to myself "I should make a current backup" about 3 days before it happened.

I dont miss the data for games that I finished, but there were a lot of games that I was in the middle of like WKC2, with that alone, I lost about 400 hours
