Yeah, I'll be surprised for a good bit over this news

I'm not that surprised, Japanese 360 gamers are the same as in the rest of the world - they eat up anything you throw at them. I expect a temporary surge of 360's for a couple of weeks at best and then it'll be business as usual. We've seen the same thing happen with other 360 high profile games. The problem is that the 360 simply can't keep the momentum over there. It's nice to see Oblivion in the top 10.
in other words,
just about all 360 owners in Japan bought Halo 3.

Yep!I was already suprised by the Oblivion sales, but this one beats them all.Maybe Japanese gamers opening a bit more up to the western products. Not much, but it´s a start.Plus the game is really fun by the way,and even strange japanese games who are almost too japanese but got good gameplay sell here too.Sometimes quality matters more the principies...or can anyone explain to me why Links 2004 is one of my favs without liking golf???Or why,I like Halo 3 even if I´m not a fan of Halo 1+2?
Nice job for Halo 3. Not a runaway dominating victory, but it's still up there. Interesting to see what will happen next week.
Even more surprising though is that there are 3 PSP games, and 1 PS3 game in this chart. . . but no Wii games. Must be Bizarro Week in Japan.
Most people weren't paying attention but Halo 3 was actually reasonably well anticipated in Japan. Famitsu did a poll last year asking what games of E3 people were most anticipating and Halo managed to make the list at number 10. Of course, the poll represents only a certain section of gamers - the type that pay attention to game conventions. I'm not sure how the game will fare in subsequent monthsbut it's impressive to see it at the top nowregardless.

I'm sure surprised. I thought these were the kind of games that the Japanese shunned?
59k is not much considering it's the 360's killer-app. But still, very impressive.

Out of 400k units sold? That's not too bad.

The Japanese 360 install base may be small, but they've shown to be just as hardcore as their Western counterparts, they ate up every high profile game thrown at them including Oblivion, Gears of War, and Lost Planet. With Microsoft's hype machine, it was expected for Halo 3 to do the same. The thing is, it'll all be over within a week or two.

yeah, if only it could keep a little momentum. which will likely not happen.

Probably becausemost of the "japanese" 360 owners are ex-pat westerners working in Japan. ;)I'm more glad that MGSPO made it on the list thanks to the heavy rise in PSP sales lately.
I hope MS does better with 360 in Japan so that Japan can get more tastes that Western games are good too.
It's probably mostly people who already have a 360. I doubt many Japanese people would buy a new console for a game, a FPS no less.Maybe for a JRPG, like Lost Odyssey or something.Galzakian
Heh, so much for the Japanese not embracing western games...selbiethats a hugly ignorant stament to make.

Pearse he meant about those who said Japanese don't play American games.
Not to troll or flame but how is under 60,000 copies shocking?
I mean I know it's a Western game (with all doing poorly there but GTA), but I fail to see how 59,000 is such a big deal.

Exactly.
I dont want to be mean but i really think that the japanese should start expanding their library of games other than mario, pokemon and final fantasy. I dont see why they dont like the hardore 360 games that are out but this halo 3 on the top of the charts did suprise me.Scythes777
They have been expanding their library -- no, not necessarily to games that fit Western tastes, but their library of games is made up of FAR more than Mario, Pokemon, and Final Fantasy, and is quite varied.
Here the hardware numbers for the week:

:o The slim PSP still has legs! Slow week on all fronts, anyway.

PSP had a great week just as expected. DS is still the same. And the Wii is dropping very fast. In June the console sold 60k in one week. The gap between PS3 and Wii is getting smaller in Japan. And 360 had a surprisingly good week thanks to Halo3 although still far behind.
