I'm getting 200 dollars to spend on amazon.com for my birthday. I could get a Gamecube for 30-40 with accessories and get the games I missed last gen (Zelda, Mario Sunshine, Metroid etc) and still have a little left over. Or I could get a PSP with a couple of games. There are a good 15-2- games I want to play on PSP, and watching movies on a portable sounds neat as well as it's other cool features. The only problem is that I just don't know if I'll be playing it enough to warrant a purchase, since I don't really travel much at all, and I've got my PS3.

What should I get?

I'd go with a PSP, but that's mostly because I'm not a big fan of the Gamecube to begin with. At least with the PSP if you don't like the games you can use it for other stuff: movies, music, and surfing the net. Both systems have few games that interest me, so I'd recommend that you go with whichever system has the most games that interest you.

a psp can barely hold my attention for more then 10 minutes, to me there a terribly boring handheld, gamecubes on the other hand are great, and if you missed out on the last gen zeldas, then you missed out big time.

Get a PSP and you dont have to have to travel to play a handheld. Just play it when ever you want. Great games, great features, and online.

Well, the Gamecube does have some seriously overlooked, and underrated games that were some of the best last gen, and you could get a system + a lot of games for $200.

But the PSP is still being supported, and it has a handful of good games.

Really depends on what your tastes for gaming is.

The Gamecube has a very impressive and underrated library of games. How can you go wrong with games like Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Tales of Symphonia?

Well the PSP is great because you can obviously take it with you and also do other stuff on it than just gaming. Plus, there's still new games coming out for it. I'd recommend it, unless the GC has more games that you are interested in... The GC does have a larger library of games to choose from.

Gamecube. Games are dirt cheap and even though it finished 3rd the GCN still had many games that must be played.

Emm... hey're pretty even. I wouldnt say that there are to many must haves on either system, especially if you already have better systems like the PS2, N64, GBA, PS1 or 360. flip a coin. Really, I can't decide. They both have a fair share of good games but both are far from the best. Unless the PSP gets a significant amount of good games later this year I'd say the two are pretty even systems.

I would go with Gamecube. With $200(if you want to spend it all) you could pretty much pick up all the good games and a cube there is.

Gamecube is a great system, problem is the availability of games right now (and memory cards), as for the PSP there aren't that many AAA titles on it and with the rumors of a new PSP announcement this fall, I would certainly hold purchasing one. Watching movies on a PSP is overated, and the PSP-3000 model has scan line problems while playing video. Personally I would just buy the GC games and later save up for a Wii, since it is backwards compatible, plus you can play Wii games such as Madworld, plus the new player control versions of Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Mario Power Tennis, etc.

PSP ftw!! there is ALOT of good games that never got any attention..ahem... all three socom games, both wipeout games, both medal of honor's, mgs portable ops, tekken dr (10.0 from me), castlevania, god of war, resistance, locoroco, patapon, street fighter alpha 3 max, super stardust portable, a crapload of exellent PS1 games for all you legacy fans (mine are suikoden and wild arms)etc. etc. plus music, movies, web browsing, on the go!! It is a common misconception that psp's are for people who travel alot, sure I use mine when im visiting relatives or riding the train but I also use it in my bed, on my couch, downstairs, at the kitchen table, during commercials on tv, and yes even a round or two of tekken while my 360 is starting up. If this doesnt appeal to you then the PSP is not for you but then again gaming probably isnt for for you if that doesnt sound good.

This topic is slightly old, but I still wanted to offer some imput.

The Gamecube might just rank as my favorite console (although the PS3 is coming close to overtaking it). Just some highlights:

Various Zelda titles. They're always a prime Nintendo series and there are a number of options for the Gamecube

Resident Evil 4. It started off as a Gamecube exclusive, before an expanded PS2 release. I still pick the Gamecube version as THE version to play as the controls simply feel better. Graphics are a bit better, also.

Speaking of Resident Evil, there is Resident Evil Zero, plus Resident Evil REmake, and RE2 and RE3, not to mention Code Veronica. And maybe one or two others I'm forgetting.

Mario Kart Double Dash, in addition to a whole menagerie of other Mario titles.

Metroid Prime is the FPS that everyone WISHES they could play. But they can't without Gamecube. Pity.

Ikaruga is considered a must-play, although I personally have not found the reviews to mention anything that I am interested in.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem might be the best exclusive on the Gamecube. Widely considered to be one of the more creative and interesting horror game around. I consider it to be a must-play and well-worth the price of the system alone.

I have played multiple versions of Lego Star Wars, and the Gamecube is by far the best of the lot (with a close 2nd to the DS version). Wholly satisfying and a ton of replay value.

Chibi-Robo! is one of those games that I have not personally played, but it looks awesome. There are a bunch of random games like this for the game cube that only Nintendo would OK.

F Zero-GX is one of the best and hardest of the space racers. Looks gorgeous and highly recommended.

Killer7 is an odd game that rides the line between FPS and horror with a distinct comic-book style. Another highly underrated game.

Beyond Good and Evil is multi-plat, but a very solid part of the Gamecube library.

So many others, I haven't even gone through half of the list. But I got bored. Soooooo...

I would go with GC. I am biased though since I really dislike handheld gaming since it is so less immersive and comfortable than a console. But the PSP looks very unimpressive to me anyways. The music and movies are sort of cool though but I only care about games. You would get a lot more games with the GC and the nice thing is it won't be a dead library since the Wii is compatible with it if you ever choose to buy it. (Wonder if the next Wii will be double BC?). Anyways, I love the Resident Evil remake, 4, and Prince of Persia Sands of Time to name a few. Might not be a big deal if you have a good version of the PS3 instead of the crap non-BC systems.

Trust me, I have both a PSP and GC and can honestly say that unless your going to hack it, the PSP really sucks.

-------------------------------------------------

I would go with the Gamecube because of :

The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Resident Evil Remake

Resident Evil 4

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Pikmin

Pikmin 2

Metroid Prime (worth buying a cube for this alone)

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Super Mario Sunshine (Under-rated)

Starwars Rouge Squadron 2: Rouge Leader

Starwars Rouge Squadron 3: Rebel Strike

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Animal Crossing

F-Zero GX

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Skies of Arcadia: Legends

Sonic Adventure: Directors Cut

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

Killer 7 (It is hands down the best version)

Tales of Symphonia

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

--------------------------------------------------

That's a lot of awesome games, and many of them are incredibly cheap.

Definetly the PSP.
The Gamecube is old now, and do NOT buy the Wii, I regret getting it.
The PSP has a good display for viewing movies and you can take it with you and doing all sorts of great things.
