" We've all encountered it; begging foreigners on Xbox Live, crying to the rest of the lobby to help them unlock their multiplayer Achievements via suicide, game-breaking behavior and more, thus spoiling the fun for everyone else.

Thankfully, it looks like Gears of War 2 at least is going to fight against the whiney Achievement whores, by limiting the amount of accolades players can unlock in a single multiplayer game.

Speaking to CVG at Microsoft's media summit this afternoon, which you might have heard about already, Gears honcho Cliff Bleszinski said Epic was going to be "throttling" the amount of achievements players can unlock at any given point.

"If you're going for headshots," he gave as an example, "you get one headshot that counts and any other headshots won't count towards your Achievement, so players don't just play to get headshots the entire round just to get Achievements."

Cliffy B also revealed that players will be able to track the progress of their Achievements in Gears 2 (which is looking lovely, by the way):

"I don't want to get into too much of the multiplayer right now, but one thing I can confirm is that we are doing Achievement progress so that players will be able to essentially track how far they're getting with each Achievement in whichever mode."

Ok the tracking thing is sounding mighty fine but capping achievements!?!?

Surely the idea of achievements is that you achieve something so when I want the "get 10 headshots achievement" its now going to take me more than ten headshots?!?! that defeats the whole point of the achievement!

This to me is far to controversial I love gears but im not liking this idea.

That system is not only stupid, but it's also easily circumvented by simply getting a headshot, leaving the game session, and starting a new one. Unless they plan on forcing people to fully see each multiplayer session through to the end, but that would mean some serious frustration for people who get disconnected from a game, and the amount of time you'd have to invest to get the achievement wouldn't make it worth it in my opinion.

If they're so concerned about achievement whoring, why don't they just leave them for the single player campaign only, and leave them out of the multiplayer? I mean, by doing this, those achievement junkies are simply going to try and find a way to circumvent the throttling system, possibly annoying people even more in the process. So just do away with the multiplayer achievements altogether if you want to get rid of people like that.

That's what I was thinking maybe add some rankings like COD4 to keep you interested.

I agree its an extremely flawed system but with the way epic are going on about it I wont be surprised if we see an incredibly annoying very much working version of it in the game and maybe in future games.

Also instead of people going on about "needing this achievement can you help" through one match they will be repeating it through all the matches they need to finish it off I cant see this working and if it does its potentially a multiplayer wrecking idea.

it's about time devs start realizing that the MP achievements they make are being abused and they do something about it. If you buy a game the day it is released, unless you have a friendslist full of people that have the same game, you're going to run into rooms full of people just trying to get achievements.

I've only ever received one invite for a certain achievement, I think it was Condemned 2. Never paid it any mind. Who cares if they all want to get achievements, you can always play any way you want.

Call me pessimistic, but won't that lead to people just getting their kill and bailing instead of whining? I agree that people whining about achievements in an online game is really annoying, but Epic better make damn sure that they only get credit if they finish the round or game.

On the other hand, some online achievements are just lame and poorly thought out. As long as Epic carefully considers how to implement the achievements, it'll probably cut down on the whining some just by that alone.

There shouldn't be this much effort put into stopping people from getting achievements and instead concentrate more on the game play, levels, and pure fun of the game.

That sounds lame. I'm not a fan of online achievements anyway, but being restricted like that is even lamer. I hated Gears 1 online. I doubt I will even bother trying the second one outside of single player / co-op, this sealed that.

Here's one: how about no multiplayer achievements, AKA COD4.
Gamerscore is utterly pointless... if it's hurting multiplayer take it out.

Personally, I would make it so that you have to win the match in order to unlock any achievments from during the match.

I don't know about this... I always liked it when people wanted to play just for achievments because I would go along with it and then totally dominate them that round. It's like a free win every time.

Also, COD4 had the same problems with people going for headshots in games. The one time I played cage match, the guy asked me if I wanted to go for headshots. I said sure, and shot the guy in the face a few times. When he said it was his turn, I just killed him a few more times and got the win.

Hit the nail right on the head.

I have a solution to prevent all achievement whores from ruining multiplayer. Take achievements out of multiplayer and put them where they belong: singleplayer.

COD4 did that, but people still went for headshots so that their guns would be a different color. To stop people from running matches like that, the only way you can do it is to make sure players get NO REWARDS WHATSOEVER. No ranks, no XP, no anything.

I think as long as they make it so you have to see a match through to it's conclusion it will be fine. Most online games if you end up getting disconnected for whatever reason you end up losing any stats you had going on anyway.

Either way it doesn't really matter all that much to me. If I end up in a match where people in it want to go for certain achievements then if everyone is on board to play like that I'll play right along with them to help even though I may already have those achievements. I've done this a few times in Halo 3 and I already have them all. I end up losing of course but I don't mind.

I don't think it's going to be as bad, or as stupid, as it might seem. Obviously, making a "get ten headshots" achievement, and then allowing only one headshot to count every match would be stupid. Not only that, but if we thought of the totally obvious "get a kill and bail the match" idea, I'm sure Cliffy B. and the gang have thought of it, too.

My guess? Achievements will read something like, "finish ten matches in which you scored a headshot with the sniper rifle," or something like that. This way it's not falsely informing you on how to get the achievement, and it keeps people from doing the old hit-and-run.

Oh yeah I forgot about that little tidbit. I really love that idea as well. It's nice to know how many you need of whatever to to get an achievement.

Good. Nothing is worse than the final member of your team 2 inches from someone and their using a sniper to try to get the stupid achievement. Or the people who completely ruin the game by using the Hammer Of Dawn the entire game.

Its great to be creative whilst playing execution so it doesnt really matter what you finished em with and people who use hammer of dawn the entire game usually end up bottom of the table...

Who cares? The MP of Gears of War had only 4 serious problems:

1st:The horrible amount of Lags and small bugs (the overpowered Host for example, cant get up the ledge...)...if the game whould work right people could unlock it without problem.

2nd:The horrible community. If I could bann people,I whould have played it longer. It´s nothing worse then little kids screaming, singing and babbling all the time.Whyever parents give them such kind of games of people...only the Hip Hoppers are almost worse.

3rd:The Achivemenst have been insane and plus the fact that they could only be ulocked on the original maps...which ususally leads to 120-150 saw-downs to get the archivements...

4th:You couldn´t do ranking matches with your friends, only if they can find your game...now thats really annoying.

Instead of limiting archivements they should improve the game itself egnough to make the people archive them for themselves!

I don't know it doesn't sound that bad to me because I don't really care about achievements like that. Think about it 1 headshot a round in 10 rounds equals 10 headshots a game thats not bad remember the achievements were only up to one hundred so I really don't see much of a problem.
