Has anyone been successful getting games like X-Com UFO Defense or Darklandsrunning on a new PC with Vista? Would appreciate the help as these are two of the best games I still have played to date.

Get DOSBox. It's free and it comes with sound. You may have to learn a minimum of MSDOS commands to navigate folders. But, there are also front ends available.

I am checking this out immediately when I get home. I've been wanting to replay the old Quest for Glory games and Interstate '76 for a long time.I am checking this out immediately when I get home. I've been wanting to replay the old Quest for Glory games and Interstate '76 for a long time.rragnaar
You do know there was a remake of the old Quest For Glory and Kings Quest games, right? They run fine in Windows without need for DOSBox and have great graphics. Best of all, the hardworking folks who re-did them offer them for free.
Type AGDInteractive Studios in Google.

I'll be sure to check it out. That sounds cool!:)I have dosbox, and I'm fluent in basic programming, but I can't find the autoexec file anymore to mount the drives. Also, when I did run Xcom before, the sound wouldn't work, and most the time I couldn't get the game to work. One point I did but I have no clue what I did because it was an accident when it all of a sudden started working. Have no clue what I did or how I did it. Was hoping someone who has gotten it to work could tell me.
btw, that compatibility mode thing in windows has never ever worked for me on any games. And I have a WIDE variety of old dos games and windows 95, 98 types.

Let's say I want to play Crusader: No Remorse which have the files located in C:\DOSGAMES\CNR
I just type at the prompt (usually Z:>)
mount c: c:\dosgames\cnr
Enter
This message appears: Drive C: is mounted as local directory c:\dosgames\cnr\
then type:
c:
Enter
(you can type dir/p or dir/w then Enter to check and see if you're in the correct folder)
Run the executable or batch file
Yup. DOSBox works great although the colors seem more dithered than I last remembered it.

I know High Stakes was one of the games in my Need For Speed Game Pack. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the cd set although Underground was the only one I spent any time on. High Stakes came out in 1999. So it had to be a Win98 app. Not sure about DOSBox. Only one way to find out if it works or not.
I think High Stakes require some patches to make it run on 32-bit operating systems (W2k, XP, et al).

Actually.... My bad. I was thinking of UFO: Enemy Unkown, not UFO Defense. It should be Vista-compatible according to Steam's web site. I don't think it even requires 3-D acceleration.
ok, now i'm getting the patches from the link : http://www.filefront.com/3836/Need-for-Speed-High-Stakes-Patch/ and i'll give a try.amirzaimI'm got an error while starting the game with these patches. Ok, i have a link from youtube for NFSHS install guide for win vista/7 here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULk7X6Alc14
