Try Human's SOS. You must escape a sinking ship while navigating ever-changing hazards as the ship twists and buckles. As a sideline you can also gather up passengers and lead them to safety using basic 'come' and 'wait' commands. It's a bit like the old Prince of Persia or EXIT. It's a hard game but it's very impressive even if you only succeed in drowning when your time runs out.

Axelay is an excellent shooting game in the vein of Space Harrier. Cybernator is a fantastic platformer with mechs. Metal Warriors is like Cyb coated in sugar with a higher price but it has its own interesting mechanics like an on-foot mode (with a jetpack) and stealing enemy mechs. Joe and Mac is a neat side-scroller with cavemen, dinosaurs and upgradable weaponry. Joe and Mac 2 is more exploration friendly and is absolutely gorgeous. If you have two players you need Rampart.

The genesis version i played on rom is different. The snes version is way better and the game goes for 21 bucks on amazon. but it was basically 25 bucks after tax.

Although it wasn't as popular as the Mario games, I loved Kirby DreamLand 3. It also has really nice, cute graphics. Super Mario World and Super Mario Cart are a must, though. I enjoyed Zombies Ate My Neighbors too.
