how are all you folks doin? I'm looking for some good tactical shooters for the xbox and ps2. I'm kinda tired of the run and gun MMS bullshit. I'm looking for an fps or tps that has to take some brains to get through. It doesn't have to be squad based. The game doesn't have to have a modern theme either. I'm looking for realistic gunplay, branching paths, (if it's squad based) good squad A.I. and commands, open or QCB warfare, and a realistic damage system (meaning it only takes a few shots to drop your ass). A lean mechanic would also be nice, but it's not needed. I'd appreciate all of your feedback.

Ghost Recon on the Xbox. If you want to just try tactics and squad command without actually being in full control I always though Full spectrum warrior for the xbox was also pretty g

You're in luck. On the original Xbox is a game called Operation Flashpoint: Elite. It's the most hardcore military shooter that was ever released on a console.

Taken straight from the manual -

"Operation Flashpoint Elite is powered by an enhanced version of the Operation Flashpoint engine technology critically acclaimed for it's realistic simulation of military conflict to the extent where it has been adapted by the United States Marine Corps, the United States National Guard, Australian Defense Forces and many other military organizations around the world for use as a special training application called VBS 1."

Just make sure you play it on mercenary (hardest difficulty), which only removes the on screen 'helpers',

Also...

Ghost Recon 1 and expansions

The original Rainbow 6 and Rogue Spear were on the PS1 (don't go near 3/Lockdown on ps2/Xbox though)

The Brothers in Arms games on Xbox were cool and a hell of alot more tactical and slower paced than the MMS run & gun bullshit. Not nearly as hardcore as the other games I mentioned (especially OFP) but on the other hand they do have some cool story/character elements that will remind you of the Band of Brothers HBO series.

I highly recommend you to pick up Socom 2 and Socom combined assault... sure graphically they look unimpressive but these games are pretty good! its the best co-op tactical shooter on PS2 for me.

The XBOX and PS2 really aren't the place to look for these sort of games. What you really need is PC.

Swat 4 (probably the best tactical FPS ever, designed by none other than Ken Levine and his team at Irrational), released only on PC in 2005

Rainbow Six 3 Gold Edition (features the Athena Sword expansion)

While Rainbow Six 3 was also released on the XBOX, the PC version is considerably deeper, with larger levels, a map editor thing that lets you plot out every move your team makes, and I believe it also has more team controls than its console counterparts.

The games aren't hard to run btw.

Gotta pretty much disregard mainstream reviews when concerning niche games.

If you're not getting into any pc stuff, you have an original Xbawks and are looking for more realistic tactical shooters ect..., you'd do yourself a serious disservice not owning OFP: Elite.

The sp campaign and expansion Resistance (which is included in Elite) is awesome, open ended and puts other military shooter sp campaigns to shame. It starts off a little slow, but they're just easing you in to it. Once you hit the 'After Montignac' mission, that's when things really start getting interesting.

Just remember when your playing on mercenary (which is the true 'Flashpoint experience'), it's not even gonna show your position when you go to your map, so you gotta get good with your compass/navigational skills and landmark recognition also.
