Yep I said it but does one game even have to be the 'clone' though, the answer is no.
I hate it when Saints Row gets bashed for being a 'Grand Theft Auto clone;

Anyway, even though Saints Row is getting bashed, Grand Theft Auto is 'cloning' Saint's Row.

  • Saint's Row 2 (2008) has mission checkpoints, Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City (2009-2010) added mission checkpoints.
  • Saint's Row 2 (2008) had the ability to save mid game, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars (2009) added the ability to save mid game.

NOTE: Not bashing Grand Theft Auto, I have both Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row games and I love both.

I believe the first Saints Row also did a proper GPS style map system with road directions prior to GTA4 doing the same.

I would have mentioned that but I haven't played the original, just 2 and 3 due to owning a PS3, if I new that I would have added it too the list.

Every game copies something from others, be it slow-mo effects, cover system etc.

Not something new.

And most game like Saints Row or True crime or any other that follow the typical sandbox recipe that Grand Theft Auto 3 introduced are/where considered "GTA Clones" It hardly used anymore though.

I know it is hardly used anymore (still hear it thrown around a bit though) but is still is stupid, every review of Saints Row 2 I saw and a saw alot, but every review started somewhere along these lines: 'Saints Row 2 is not Grand Theft Auto IV' or 'It's absolutely impossible to talk about Saint's Row 2 without mentioning Grand Theft Auto IV), so basically every review of Saints Row 2 (epic game) is biased.

Reviews aren't neutral, a Review features the writers own impression of the game. If they don't like the game then the review about it will reflect that.

Both of those things have been around for much longer than Saints Row 2, this whole argument is a joke to be honest.

GTA started the sandbox/free roam genre. It should be left there. If someone claims SR, or any other sandbox game is a "gta clone" they're just ignorant fools.

It would be the same as calling Cod, halo,or any other FPS, a Doom/Wolfenstein ( which ever game started the FPS genre ) clone

Saints Row is its own game. Just because its the same genre as another game does not make it a clone. Every game exists in a genre that was created by a completely different game. If SR is a clone, It would mean that every game in existence is a straight clone.

Its very funny to me because usually a game that is called a clone, the game that its supposedly cloning is actually a clone too.

Like when people say every game that features a cover system is a clone of Gears Of War, when games where using cover systems 10 years before GOW even existed. Any military shooter is now called a COD clone, even though Cod is actually a clone of 50 million other FPS & military shooters before it.

A clone of another game that is also actually a clone. CloneCeption?

BTW the original Saints Row also introduced the cell phone mechanic that was also used in GTA4

They were originally called Doom-Clones, but somebody decided along the way to just start calling it by a genrea title, thus First-Person-Shooter was born

Same thing here, Oringially we callled all these games GTA-clones, now we should just be calling them Sandbox (shooter) games

and GTA is soooooooooooo much better then Saints Row :)

I don't really care who copies who, as long as both series improve over time.

I wish GTA would copy SR, maybe it would make GTA V fun when it comes out. Vis versa, SR copied the fun from GTA:SA, while GTA IV got rid of it.

I understand that both games take ideas from each other for better gameplay but personally I like GTA way more. I just like the more serious environment in Grand Theft Auto whereas in Saints Row, you run around in a space suit beating people to death with giant purple d!ldos I get that SR is the more arcade style game, but I don't like it nearly as much.

In the end, it doesn't matter. What's important is what you enjoy. Me, I enjoy both GTA (I have been a fan since the original was released) and Saints Row (same with that, pretty much) and I also love other games such as The Getaway. I also love games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor... it doesn't matter. Enjoy what you enjoy. Everybody takes inspiration from something. Think about music, movies, books... they all come from somewhere. Let's put this "clone" business to rest ;).

Yes, because if two games have something similar, the newest game's developer copied the other.

It doesn't bother me either but what does bother me is Saint's Row getting bashed for being a 'GTA Clone', that's why I made this thread.

No, it really isn't. Saints Row 3 was quite a disappointing game. It wasn't even as good as SR2, let alone GTA IV. They focused too much on "Look how CRAZY we are guys" instead of remembering to actually make a good game. The side content was absolutely awful compared to SR2, and the game got boring fast. Generally good story missions though.

I wasn't calling it a clone, I made this thread because i'm sick of Saint's Row being bashed for a 'clone'.
On the 'GTA Clone' logic that would make:

  • Uncharted a Tomb Raider clone.
  • All FPSs Doom clones (as you said).
  • Splinter Cell a Metal Gear Clone.

I hate the term 'clone'.
Also I know some people who somehow consider Assassin's Creed a Hitman clone.

Actually Driver came first, anyway, calling a game a 'clone' stupid. On that logic every game is a Pong clone, the creators of Pong made a game, so other people copied

Not in Driver 1, but in Driver 2 you could. Well you could get out of your car and steal other cars. That's about it. And only when the police weren't chasing you. Oh and in certain missions you could even walk up to your garage and press a button to open it! But no, I also wouldn't classify the first 2 Driver games as sandbox. They were open world and you could free roam when you weren't doing the story missions, but outside of just driving around and having police chases there wasn't anything to do. Hardly much of a sandbox.

SR is a ok series in its own right, but in no way shape or form does it come close to GTA in terms of being meaningful.

It is open world so you can just ignore the plot and treat it like GTA but it does not have the "magic."

The writing and plots are vapid, the characters forgettable.

It's not serious, it's not funny, it's not anything.

Unsubstantial.

If they stopped making the series I would not even notice.

Uggh, I really wish people would stop calling Saints Row a clone, when GTA IV took a serious turns and swapped it's trademark Rhino for dating, Saints Row 2 took a completely different turn and gave the player over the top fun, I think GTA V is heading back in the over the top fun direction but Saints Row and GTA will still be completely different games.
