VC! lol Ummm....I think I liked GTA4, but it just didn't feel right. If SA had GTA4's story it would be the best.
I personally liked San Andreas more. I liked the idea of being able to customize your own character andcars you had.
I think GTA IV's gameplay was a lot better, as in, the gunplay was in every single way a trillion times better. The movement of the character (jumping over obstacles, climbing, taking cover) and all that was a lot better as well but San Andreas had a lot more to it in every other way. You had stealth and silenced pistols and knife stealth kills, bicycles, a huge countryside, airplanes, jetpacks, a longer story, three different cities and car and character customization.
It was also a lot easier to get to know your way around, most likely because you weren't constantly looking at the radar because of the path being highlighted so you could actually look at the environment and you had to pause to study the map. And probably also because the environments were a lot more diverse. In GTA IV you can't go ANYWHERE without there being very similar apartment and office buildings.
Whoever said IV had a better story, I don't agree with that. GTA games are just interesting character after interesting character after interesting character. They don't really have a plot. The "plot" just moves you from A to B and from gunfight to car chase. And they're never about anything. The generic protagonist arrives in city x and needs cash but still he only ever spends it on guns and eventually he kills all the bad guys.
Definitely Grand Theft Auto IV. San Andreas was awesome for its continuation of the Grand Theft Auto III universe, but Grand Theft Auto IV took the series in a new direction and it is the most important reinvention of the series since Grand Theft Auto III (which makes perfect sense). Grand Theft Auto has grown up and I love it for that.
[QUOTE="muthsera666"]Neither. My order is GTA III, GTA VC, GTA SA.stike22GTA3 the best...I am not debating you or anything but out of interest, why? I mean I remember it and it was decent but a little dead so why?...maybe because it wasn't trying to be something its not? Honestly, I don't completely know. There was something about it... Part of it was that it was more gritty, I guess. It was more streamlined than SA (I don't like The Sims, which managing Carl was too close), too, I guess. It was just, better... :?

VC was more relaxed as there was some groundwork from the first one. SA, I don't know what happened. But, I'm glad that you know what I mean about the way it feels. :)

For some reason, GTA III doesn't get much love. It's recognized as a game landmark, but the game itself isn't really liked that much anymore, it seems. And, while I may disagree with you on some topics, it's great that we can both discuss our opinions in an adult manner, instead of the raving that goes on a lot of the time. :P
I think GTAIV is much better than San Andreas.
San Andreas is actually the worst GTA game IMO. It crapped all over the less is more rule (although I understand that some people don't believe in this particular philosophy), parts of it were sloppy and I felt that the vastness of the environment was at the expense of the individual cities. The only city that seemed to be as detailed and interesting as the cities in the other games was Las Santos. San Fierro was kind of borring and Las Venturas, while cool and well-designed, still had something missing. The countryside was really awesome though.
I think GTAIV has the most detailed and breathtaking environment in the series: the recreation of New York is just oozing with atmosphere and seems much more believable as a living and breathing city than the other cities in the series.
I feel GTAIV also had a much better story. It was more sophisticated and more focused. San Andreas's story failed to have a consistent theme. It was kind of ridiculous that the storyline ran the gamut from Boyz in the Hood to Area 51. I also think GTAIV had much better characters. San Andreas's characters didn't seem as memorable.
GTAIV's gunplay was 100x better IMO, thus any mission that involved gunplay in GTAIV was automatically much better than any mission in San Andreas that involved gunplay. I do think there's an argument to be made for less mission variety in GTAIV, but when the core gameplay is so much improved, I'm much more tolerant of the fact that there's so much less mission variety in GTAIV.
I never really cared too much about the car customization. I never keep cars in GTA games. It seems pointless. The RPG elements in SanAndreasseemed rather pointless as well and seemed to be an odd fit in a GTA game, so I don't mind the loss of them either.
Basically, the only thing I think San Andreas has on GTAIV is mission variety. I think GTAIV slaughters San Andreas in everything else. I feel GTAIV is more crisp and focused and there's simply more quality control present. There's alot more rough edges in San Andreas and while GTAIV is not as polished as say MGS4, for a GTA game and for a sanbox game, the level of polish is actually quite amazing.
I hope R* continues to take GTA in this new direction.

Personally, I did kind of like the fact that as you used the weapons more, your skill in them increased. That had good aspects, as being able to dual-wield and so forth.I never really cared too much about the car customization. I never keep cars in GTA games. It seems pointless. It was a good idea, but I don't think the execution of that particular feature was all that great. And also, I'll take GTAIV's polished gun mechanics over varying degrees of weapons skill within a poor targeting system.
This is typical of the problems I had with San Andreas. There was much more features and content in San Andreas than GTAIV, but most of it wasn't executed as well as the content in GTAIV was IMO.
