Harking back to the days of 8 bit and even beyond games have been striving to create an atmospheric experience relying on artfully told storylines and visual content. With the implimentation of 3D with the N64 and psx games, which had so far had to rely more on engrossing story, could now begin to enthrall users with beautiful textures and realistic environments. With current gen consoles and pc graphics have taken an amazing leap in a very short time. What I put to you fine users of GameSpot forums is this. When will gaming graphics go too far. With games this generation being banned because of overuse of violence what will happen when that violence looks true to life?

Well I can see that I got the one member on GameSpot with absolutely nothing important to say as my first poster. I hope that the other members will have something insightful to say.

No matter how realistic the violence gets to be in video games, I believe its up to the gamer to use good judgment & not try something like murder in real life.

Graphics can always improved, even get to look better then real life. Beside if the game is that violent it is the parents responsibility to choose what games he plays and if not, only an idiot wouldn't know the differences between real life and virtual.

I disagree. Graphics, other than fantasy graphics, will never look better than real life. You will never get a realistic game looking better than real life because there is either nothing better than real life or humans cannot fathom something looking better than real life. Sure it may be the parents responsibility but the parents can only really dictate a child's life up to a certain age where as it gets too difficult for the parent to interfere in the child's life. The parent needs to allow the child to make choices on games they buy. Their are age restrictions to guide the parents but the age restrictions are pathetic.

I have a feeling it will only be 10 more years until we have graphics as good as real life :) And better then real life after that. They can have better lighting sharper images, that blur effect thing. They can do alot to make it look better then real life.

Well think of it this way, with a more powerful engine wouldn't it also allow you to make a more stylized, artistic, more atmospheric game as well. I mean, just because you can make it look like real life doesn't mean you have to. Look at say Okami. This kind of thing can only be improved upon with better engines.

When I see Kasumis teeth fallout in a display of photorealistic graphic violence I will say it has gone too far and stop playing fighting games.

the only reason why you guys are putting this post is that you have a terrrible console which can't withstand good graphics, and loves adventure games way too much.

I don't really like realistic graphics (but I still play games with realistic graphics, I can't wait for Heavy Rain because of it's gameplay). I want games to look like a game. Graphics is one of the least I look in games. To be honest, my favorite type of graphics is Saints Row 2 and Oblivion. And I prefer JRPG graphics than MGS4, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain graphics.

I don't think graphics will ever go TOO far, as reality in graphics is impossible solely by the power of computer graphics, and better is truly IMPOSSIBLE (seeing as we, the people, define the paragon of reality. Nothing computer-made can look "better" than us, because we are the standard itself. As with violence, if someone is truly pushed into violence by a game, that is less the fault of the game and more because of the vulnerability of the gamer. Responsibility is a large factor in gaming, as much as the games themselves.

Thats the thing. The vulnerability of the gamer will be increased exponentially by the increase of graphics. Seeing someone's head blown off in 8 bit is alot differend than seeing someone's head blown off in current gen. I am glad that someone understands that graphics cannot be increased beyond what we see as real life.

How is seeing a gorey death in computer graphics any worse from seeing it done with special effects in a live action film? Or described a bit too intricately in a novel? If graphics improved to the point were they were indistinguishable from real life, nothing would change. We'd still have the same old crap to deal with only our video games would look amazing.

im very happy for games to continue to increase there graphical prowess, and for them to include more realistic violence seeing as it doesn't affect me and games developers shouldn't be held back by hippies thinking that if i cut someones head off in a game i'm going to go outside and start a random killing spree...so if games designers find ways to make games with even better graphics im happy for them to, and as far as im concerned they can add all the violence they want.

BUT:

i don't want developers thinking that better graphics give them an excuse to put out a game with a lack-luster storyline, or gameplay. graphics always come third.

ALL of them do, because they ARE games. The only possible exception is when there are live-action sections, like in The X-Files for the PS1. You want to define game graphics as something less than realistic. Too bad. Games with realistic graphics are still games, and the developers intend them to look that way, so yes, they "are meant to be" that way.

It is actually, as far as we know now with todays technology, impossible to make graphics in comuters better than real life. This is because the world is analog and computers are digital. Digitally projected sounds, images , videos and so on can never be as good as analog versions because you will always have a certain number of variations in the digital world. So imagine what happens when you zoom in on a picture on your computer, what happens when you zoom in far enough? You see the pixels the picture consists of, and digitally projected pictures will always have pixels. Now imagine a hair in a microscope, you can zoom in on this as much as you want, and there will never be pixels. Just to ty ruining your fun :P

I agree that graphics are going to far, but i think your fears are unfounded.

My problem is that realism is starting to take the place of art style, and so all games are starting to look the same.

Movies = realistic graphics right there :? and look how violent it could get  yet I don't see kids suddenly going out killing people. Seriously though, I never bought the whole "medias are affecting our kids" argument, billions of people have access to the exact same thing yet probably less than 0.1% of those billion would start murdering people or start a crime spree  It's not the fault of the media, the kids should be held responsible for their own action and of course what their parents taught them. I think we all remember the infamous kid learning how to drive from playing GTA4... that's irresponsible parents right there, and what about parents taking kids to see the Watchmen movie? Heck, the consoles these day even have parental locks, do you think the "Halo killer" could be named Halo killer if his parents just take like... 1 minute to read through the Xbox 360 manual? Or how about look at the rating on the box?

hair --> molecules --> atoms --> subatomic particles --> ???

Can't always zoom in to smaller scales. Eventually, you couldn't even capture an image because of how photons behave.

What do you mean "better then real life"? The visuals in reality are the highest humans have seen.

Movies are ahead of games in graphics and movies have yet to be banned due to graphic content, they simply get rated for adults. People are stabbed, shot and die realistically. No one cares and we become used to it.

well those saying you can never go to far , ,really tell that to a handhelds battery life

because it can limit the graphics,

psp is only 3 hrs right now as we stand in gameplay depends on title to ,

its as powerful as ps2 ,, so think about one that would be as powerful as ps3 , i doubt that will happen at least not for the price handhelds traditionally go for ,

psp go is already well above the traditional price of less then 250 -300

gg failed at 300 so ya

on a console it can be limitless but only till its on par with real life-that wont happen in a long time

the handhelds will always be very limited if they want to succeed

Nothing can look better than real life. You can only improve the art style once it's life like
