I prefered GTA3's atmosphere/setting and missions. VC had a better story, an amazing soundtrack, and more weapons. Overall, I like GTA3 more since it felt closer to GTA2 in terms of humor and atmosphere.
For me gta 3 had better storyline i liked the fact that you worked for some like mafia type boss and you eventually meet him and he attempets to get you killed.
CTRL + Q to Enable/Disable GoPhoto.it CTRL + Q to Enable/Disable GoPhoto.itThey were both great, but I never managed to complete GTA3 because when I got to that part were the mafia turn against you, I could never beat the next mission as a mafia guy would always shoot my car engine and instantly kill me, so I never found out how it ended.
After finishing them both i found that Vice City was the one that kept giving more. The soundtrack probably helped in this.
GTA3 was a more innovative game, changing the gameplay of the series quite a bit, as well as visually (although not nearly as some people think , after all GTA1 and GTA2 did use 3D graphics for the buildings)
Vice City was the better game if looked at on its own merits (as opposed to simply what it did for the franchise or to gaming), imo it was just more polished , had a better atmosphere , a very good soundtrack , better story , etc.
GTA III for me. I liked the Columbians in GTA III. The characters, 8-ball, edge out a win for me too. I also liked the easter eggs in GTA III, and the game's difficulty was just right to complete the game 100%. I liked the difficulty of flying the Dodo. GTA III seemed fresh at the time. In Vice City I mainly liked property buying, and the Carlito's Way references.
I owned them all when they came out on consoles, but I haven't played the games in like 10 years. I played SA like 2 years ago, and it seems to have not aged well. I actually expect III, and VC to have aged better although I have not tested that theory. Maybe its because I have SA on Xbox, and PS2 possibly plays the games better. SA's boring ugly desert and hick towns don't help its cause either.
I absolutely agree with you mate do not think SA aged well at all whether it being on ps2 or xbox, the only reason i ever feel to getting it back is for the territory missionsGTA III for me. Vice City is leagues ahead GTA III. More weapons, more vehicles, more to explore, better music, and more memorable characters in the storyline.
get it back and complete it i was like you until couple of months ago got it again and completed it ending was alright but left on cliff hangerMrGamerOFCourse
I'm definitely going to, I'm actually looking on ebay for it atm, but the snipe bidders keep getting me :)

That comment seems to come on these forums a lot, ''hasn't aged well'', in what way do you mean - graphics? gameplay? or do you just not like the setting and storyline?

The pc version is the way to go. Before gta4, the pc gtas play much MUCH better--it's almost like a different game.I know this thread is about 3 and VC, but I have a question about San Andreas - was there a special edition version of SA? I keep seeing it mentioned on ebay, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.

Owners of the new Special Edition version of the game can also look forward to two bonus discs with extra content on them. The first, and by far the more interesting for players, will probably be "The Introduction" -- the same 30-minute movie that accompanied the smaller San Andreas soundtrack late last year. It offers some awesome background info on all the characters and their motivations coming into the opening events of San Andreas, and on the whole is pretty damned cool. The second disc is a slickly-produced full-length documentary known as "Sunday Driver" and tells the story of Compton's Low-riding "Majestics" club. Gearheads and Mod freaks will likely dig this, but its mixed messages and tendency to preach (and preach inaccurately, I might add) about the lawfulness of low-riding can wear on the nerves.IGN
In other words, nothing new in-game (other than the removal of the 'Hot Coffee' content).

I meant in terms of graphics. But the setting of small towns with nothing going on and empty, ugly desert was also boring. I was basically responding to people that said GTA III didn't age well. Although I am not sure, too lazy to dig up my PS2, imo GTA SA has aged worse than III or VC. I will dig up my PS2 in the near future and try out that theory.
Here is what I own
SA on Xbox
GTA III, VC on PS2.
I've played both, and both are fun to play with. But Vice City is more fun, humorous, and graphicly better.
GTA3 was good for its time cause it was the first foray into 3d openworld gaming for the franchise and it was fresh but i did prefer VC over '3. All that said though my overall favorite GTA is hands down SA for the story and sheer volume of places to go and stuff you could do within the world.

Judging by your avatar it does look like you could relate more to SA ;)

gta 3 doesn't really have a storyline, the protagonist claude, doesn;t even talk. gta 3 was awesome when released but kicked in the dirt by vice city a year later, which is better in everything except the world is smaller(not counting the pointless beach)
