I think you mean scapegoating videogames instead of facing importance socio-economic issues which cause crime in the first place.

I do believe that there needs to be a harsher ratings system, but it has nothing to do with age. People like this guy that (and I'm believing GTA4 actually made him do it for this scenario) emulate what they see in a video game cannot be completely mentally stable. I'm 14 and have had no ideas of stealing a car and ramming it into nearby pedestrians or gunning people down for no reason. Unfortunately there truly is no possible way to test this factor and incidents like this will continue to happen. He also may just be saying that to try to get some sort of aliby for a sentence that doesn't involve the death penalty.

My friend told me about an incident involving a paranoid schizophrenic.

He was left alone at home one day and was listening to Meatloaf.

A lyric in the song he was listening to said something along the lines of 'Burn down your house', so, being a schizo, he did.

Not his fault really, or the song's. But his condition's fault.

Just shows it isn't the source material, it is the condition of the person causing the incident.

Wow he's facing death by lethal injection for what he did... southeast Asia is very, very strict and you wouldn't believe some of the punishments available for criminal behavior. I think in Malaysia being in possession of Cocaine/Heroin/Meth could result in the death penalty.

I love how they make sure that even grown adults can't buy the game because of what some stupid kid did.

He's not a "kid". He's 18 years old. He's a man. This man should have enough logic and rationality developed in his mind to understand cause and effect. If he doesn't, he may have a mental illness or some other cognitive deficiency. From what I've read it sounds like he's trying to put the blame on the game as a last ditch effort to lessen his penalty for this crime.

Blaming games is the less known, and therefore less deniable, alternative to pleading insanity. For example, a murderer pleads insanity when charged with murder. Now he still gets some form of punishment but the focus is on his illness or the chance that he is lying, and not on the case itself. When a suspect blames games, he turns the attention away from his actions to the effect of games on people's minds.

Damnit, why can't we all just go back to more innocent times before all these evil video games and hate-filled music lyrics started corrupting society. You know, back to the 1950's when life was just like Leave it to Beaver. Where certain folk weren't allowed in resturants or public bathrooms, when an entire community would gather around a tree for a wholesome Saturday night lynching, and when the only things people had to worry about were getting to little Billy's baseball game on time and the threat of total nuclear annhilation.
