GTA4 -- So what were they thinking? Has there been a post-release interview with them explaining why they went the way they did?

Houser: Okay, so after 5 iterations of GTAIII we have fixed the aiming system. So now what?

Intern: We could screw with the driving mechanics.

Houser: Brilliant!

I just started playing GTA4 about 2 hours ago and the driving is really dragging down the game. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but man, what a let down.

I actually love the driving in GTA4 now that I've put so many hours into it. You have to use the normal brake as much as the e-brake this time around. I've been playing this game more over the last few days, and now that my original negative opinions are wearing off I'm starting to appreciate the game for what it is on a whole new level.

I actually liked the driving in GTA IV. You'll get used to it yea, but it wasn't something that bugged me when I first started playing the game.

I completely agree, at first I utterly despised the driving mechanics, but half way through the game i fell in love with them.

So I guess, from what I've read, they were going for something more realistic but compare what they did to most sim-driving games and they are not even close. I get that most people "get used to it" but if I'm making a game with "auto" in the title and driving being the core mechanic then it should be perfect out of the box.

i kind of got used to it, but i still dont find it as efficient as the old way. i understand its more realistic, but shooting down police helicopters and hiding down the block for 5 mins isnt that realistic either. this is one area i prefer less realism.

Yeah its horrible and one of the biggest flaws in the game. You do get a little more comfortable with it and some of the later cars seem to handle better but yeah overall I didnt like the driving in the game either.

Yeah, after about 5 hours of play today (spent mostly watching Republican Space Rangers on Nico's TV) I got to drive some better cars, and it is not as bad as Roman's car and the delivery vehicle I jacked.

It's still not as good as it could of been though.

They handle really losely, one thing I found irksome was how easy it is to make the car to a 180 degree turn. Other then that steady control, braking, and finesse and you'll get the driving down.

Man, that's weird. I went back and played from the beginning a while back and thought Roman's car handled pretty well.

Yeah Roman's car is one of my favourites. And you can't get it once he has upgraded to SUV's.

GTA IV's driving is a mixed bag for me. I actually love the realism and the damage aspects... Crashes feel so great in this game. However, all of this ruined the high speed chases.

I went back to play some Saint's Row and I hate how the cars control to a point. with the e break I can make a 90 degree turn within the confines of a two lane street going 70mph and almost every car, while not handling the same, breaks and turns pretty much the same. Oh and the crashes are a joke but there are still highspeed crazy car chases...

So it's really just a mixed bag of feelings for me.

It's a matter of getting used to it. The first hours the car handling feel horribly floaty, like driving on a road of butter; after you get better cars, their handling improves accordingly, and your driving skills as well. By the time you get to the Banshee, Infernus and Turismo cars, you should have no trouble.

Bike riding took me a bit more to get used to.

I agree. Bikes were tough to learn. I actually really love how the cars handle in this game. One thing I forgot to mention about the handling is that letting off the gas is almost more effective than braking around corners. I think the Comet is my favorite car, followed closely by the Infernus. The Infernus is great because the engine is in the back, so you can crash into a lot more stuff before your car stops running. It is like a high speed tank.

The reason why I don't like GTA4 is because it became too realistic.

They were probably thinking about people like me who have asked for more realistic driving for a long time :P

The driving is one of the aspects I like the most about GTA4.

I love ramming a Patriot from behind with an infernus. Its low nose and angled shape makes the hummer look-alike jump vertically in an impossible fashion.

Definitely, the Infernus will just plow under most stuff. It is really fun to go cause havoc with that car. I'm an expert drive-by grenadier.

I love doing that!

If I can't find a good car like those ( or even a Comet, I have two saved up since they're kinda rare :( ) I usually settle for a muscle car like the Dukes or Saber GT.

Yeah, Crackdown has some crazy driving.

The more sluggish and laggy driving really ruined gta4 for me also... but I think the really bad framerate didn't help either. And the crappy lighting effects they were trying to pull off, and failed badly.

I really love the driving physics of GTA4. Driving the equivalent of a family sedan wasn't thrilling, but driving high end cars like the Infernus or the Cheetah felt amazing. Also the physics/blood of GTA (nothing like watching Niko go through a windshield) are so entertaining I never really got tired of fender benders.

After playing Forza 2 for a while then playing GTA4 the driving isn't perfect but then again its not a driving sim. It's not bad its fairly realistic eg in the rain you slide, i prefer it to be difficult than be arcade where by no matter what speed you go you will make a corner and stop really fast :?

I'm firmly on the side of those who appreciated the more sim-like aspects of GTAIV.

Once you learn the nuances of driving in the game, you can pull off some pretty spectacular maneuvers.

It's also worth noting that GTAIV has the best, most comprehensive damage system save for GRID. The variations and degrees of damage are literally endless.

The driving on gta4 is alright, until you hit god knows how many poles and houses and other cars. and how many times you fly out your windshield.

the game is still awesome though.

I didn't like the new mechanics at all. Just one more reason I don't want anything to do with GTA IV. *goes to play Vice City*
