Counter question: What reason do you have not to play a female if you have the choice?

For me in many cases I choose a female character because the models look better. No, not in the way that I prefer looking on a female butt (which certainly is the case though). I just find that good male character models are rare, especially in games with character customization.

Only in games that have kind of a flirt-factor, like Mass Effect 2 or the Harvest Moon series I wouldn't consider to play a female character. Would feel kinda awkward to me.

Since you brought up Mass Effect 2, I can tell you that the experience is different as a female. You aren't merely changing skins.

I don't usually pick the females, but I can think of two reasons why. First, like the guys that created Tomb Raider said, if you have to stare at the back of your character for the duration of the game, why not have something nice to look at?

Second, female characters sometimes get better gameplay features, such as being faster, or carry more items, like Jill in the first Resident Evil.

I use a Female character on Mass Effect. I don't like the guy characters on Mass Effect. They all look somewhat dumb.

My Commander Shepard from Mass Effect was a female. I don't know who this guy they are calling 'Commander Shepard' in all the TV and internet ads is. He looks like a loser. .:P

I find that my mains in all the fighting games I play often times are females. Mostly because I usually prefer the faster and quicker characters, which are usually females. When it comes to make your own character games I almost always make a man. Though I'll go back after I beat the game and play as a female, at least for a few hours to see if there is any real difference.

Getting to look at a female ass for hours rather than a male one. Also, in Mass Effect I find it much easier to play renegade as a female character because I don't identify as much with her and consequently don't feel as guilty when I do mean stuff to people.

This.

If I'm gonna stare at an ass for fifty or sixty hours, it's goddamn well going to be a FEMALE one.

Most of the time i make a male character and name him my name, it only feels wrong for me to make female characters in games like fable where people are chasing you all around and the other gender falls in love with you.

I almost always play as a male. If I'm playing an RPG, I take on the role of the character. I'm not gay so I'm not going to be a female. For example, In Mass Effect, I feel as though I really am Shepard.

The argument that they play as a female is because they are looking at the chicks butt the whole time is stupid. They don't want to look at a guys. Because if thats the case they are just insecure 12 year olds.

In RPGs I will mostly play mages and archers with a female and warriors as a male character. The armor looks best on those models most of the time IMO.

I look at games objectively, I don't feel like I'm the character, but I feel like I'm simply following the main character in their journey. :P

When I play Metal Gear Solid I don't feel like I'm snake or something, when I play Tomb Raider I don't feel like I'm Lara Croft.

I have enough games where I play as guys (probably around 85 or so %) so why not change it up a bit? The experience changes, for sure. In most of my games, the default character is male, so when I have the choice, I choose female because it provides a different experience. I try both out anyway, so it doesn't matter anyway.

In Mass Effect's case, that's pretty easy. A lot of people just prefer Jennifer Hale's voice. I personally didn't care for it in the first ME (never finished a femShep playthrough) and I have yet to try with ME2.

For me, I usually do a lot of playthroughs so why restrict myself to just one part of the game, right? If I start out with a female character though, it was probably due to my time with KoTOR. I had a female main character and that was the first time I finished and enjoyed an RPG. From then on, I started with a female character retaining the name for KoTOR2 and Dragon Age. I broke that with ME, however.

For Mass Effect personal every time I look at the male shepherd he kinda reminded me of those QB types that kinda breeze through live cause of their looks and strength. But in general I'm so used to playing with male characters that its a nice change of pace to play with the female. Also like it was previously mentioned I prefer looking at the swaying hips of a female heroine bashing the heads of her enemies then that of a male.

Jennifer Hale also simply does a better job in the role then her male counterpart.

-Preferable skill-set (more agile, healers, etc.) -More interesting customization visually (must more variety to outfits) -Better characters (I find the male characters often generally less likable)

I've asked my guy friends that same question, and the invariable response is "because I'd rather stare at a girl's ass than a guys".

Which I've always found strange, because given the option most females I know will pick female characters to represent them.
Maybe we've finally stumbled upon some irrefutable psychological difference between men and women...

Depends on the game for me. I'll pick female depending of the attributes the character will have, otherwise it's just for the fun of it. I mostly play male characters in games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. I played as a female character in Star Wars: Jedi Academy, Lilly the Siren in Borderlands. Just depends on the game.

The question is why does it bother you. Cause to me its just a nice change of pace since most games have only a male character to play as.

I don't really know why actually lol. Maybe it's because I can't really connect with the character? Or it could be because I have to dress up the character. If it wasn't for the multiple characters in FF13 I probably wouldn't have bought it because of the main character.

Female characters in fighting games are l33t as hell. I will ruin you all with Talim.

As for RPG's, if I have a choice of a male and a female character, since I ususally beat RPG's twice, I do both.

In RPGS : Its a fantasy game. I'd rather do something different. That and most of the time I think the male models look stupid or at least not enough like me to make me feel like I am in the game. Oh and one more thing. I'd rather stare at some hot half naked elf chick's butt for hours on end then some dude in full plate mail*.

In Other Games : Nina Williams kicks ass in Tekken for instance. Need I say more?

*On a cultural note : I know a lot of you have said something about this type of statement. These games are as much entertainment as virtual digital art. Why can someone appreciate a painting, but when someone creates a visually appealing avatar it is some how considered perverse or at least against the norms? Since when is video game playing NOT mainstream anymore? None of this should be suprising now with the overt sexualization of all media.

Why are you even staring at the ass in the first place? When I play any 3rd person games, I usually am looking at my enemies and surroundings.

GeminiEntity

You look at those, too, of course. But the one constant throughout all those surroundings and events is the player's character, and let's just say that all things being equal, I'd just rather stare at the backside of a female than a dude. There's just something mystical about the female form, you know?;)

I usually play male characters for the sole fact that I can identify with the character. As said before, my Shepard is male. I might play female if I get bored, but I usually play male characters.

I've heard a lot of people say that they prefer to play as a male character cause they relate to them better. Well I would like to throw something out there. Most protagonists in games are by default white males (even in japanese games). I could defiantly see why a white male may not be used to playing with a character that doesn't resemble them. Most people in the world are not white males. Yet those of us who aren't white males are able to play as one and still find a way to relate and connect with the character even though he doesn't resemble us. So why would it be all that much harder to connect with a female character, or an elf, oran org, or any character that doesn't look just like us?

The only game that I choose to play as a girl is Fallout 3. That's because I get the Black Widow perk and I get a bonus for attacking male characters (which there seems to be more of).

If there is a difference other than the way they look chances are the person playing may be a bit perverted.
